Seems like his relationship with Ball, OVH & al-Taay broke down in October and he might have fallen out with Nagasawa & Conchie in the last few weeks. This is all from the outside looking in, I've heard nothing

If Chief isn't gone by the end of the weekend, ever fired or through his own resignation I will lost my mind.
If this was any league in the world where relegation was a possibility, he would be gone by now... so why is he still here?!
I wonder if WUN are happy they didn't sack Aloisi last season when they finished 2nd last.
Did they lose all their derby games? Did they get hammered 6:1 in a derby? Did they finish games with 1 or no shots on target? On top of losing games, did they do so in the most boring, depressing, pass it backwards fashion?
Honestly I don't know so I'm asking but this Nix team plays the worst dross I've seen possibly ever in our history (Been a fan since 09/10) And it's hard to see anything improve.
WU were yes 11th (12 teams) last season with a -19 GD.
Aloisi keeping his job and 12 months later, getting the best out some young early 20s guys who have come through their academy like Bozinovski, Grimaldi and Botić. They have been around the comp 2-4 years now. That seems the sweet spot for most young players to have a 'breakthrough' season, if they are to. Plus two 25 yr olds in Thurgate & Tate Russell that have joined from other ALM clubs, and been quality.
But Aloisi has now been coaching in the A League for nearly 13 years. That's alot of experience, and yeah winning the toilet seat 3 seasons ago obviously helped him keep his job at the end of last season.
Don't forget Zadkovich at the Roar (paltry 8 pts all season) & Zdrilić at the Glory (awful -32 GD) haven't been sacked this season. Nix are 19 pts & -12 GD.
But yeah if as rumoured Chiefy has lost the dressing room that ain't great. Especially if that's the older core guys like Barba, Wootton, Rufer and Payne. If true maybe it is time for a change. Even say it's Chiefy goes on leave and Griffiths & Greenacare take over until season end. See if that gets a response, and review the situation immediately after the last game. Feel somewhat sorry for Italiano. He's a young coach, who gave the club their best every season, but it just hasn't worked this campaign.
If only those 2 recent home draws, against other strugglers CCM & Roar had been wins. Team would have got some confidence from that.

Interesting call- and to be fair they’ve smashed Auckland and Adelaide this season. But Aloisi is an attacking coach and an entertaining coach, when he gets a chance.
I don't necessarily need to see him sacked but I want for his contract to not be extended. Wouldn't be upset if he was demoted to the assistant of his replacement.
Coaches need to bring in their own team. Otherwise they end up like Darje, with excuses and blaming Rado.
I really do wonder if Chiefy has started to lose the dressing room at this rate.
Talking a big game all week - trained really well all week, the lads are up for it, players coming back & '8 finals to turn the season around' blah, blah, blah. And then what, we go out there and manage to turn out a massive steaming hot turd of that magnitude? What the f u c k is actually going on?!!?
Called it before H/T of the derby. This horseshark simply cannot go on until the end of the season, it just can't. Something needs to give, and it needs to give pretty bloody quickly.
Dire.
Italiano started to lose the dressing room back in October.
Had heard this from about the turn of the year, but had just been sitting on it.
It's become a bit harder to turn a blind eye to it lately though. Elephant in the room stuff if you will...
Chief was the feedback from the players guy for Talay iirc. Difficult to do both jobs. And as a new head coach he’s clearly got defensive reactions. Perhaps it was difficult to transition from everyone’s mate to head coach.
One thing is Chief has cut players loose at points and just blanked them. And you guys didn’t believe me when I said that the polite public disagreement with a coach felt fairly combative and a loud message from my experience of a Japanese point of view. The fact that they were given at an embassy event too seems a high profile venue, which indicates a seriousness. It suggests failure by fans, the club and football journos that the boys needed a meeting like that to speak and be heard.
Overall he was too ambitious and believed his own press. He needed to build on what we had, but instead as he lost a lot of our fittest and most creative players, he tried a new style too.
To be fair I was hopeful at the start of the season, but worried where the goals were coming from. It felt the opposite to last season where we were under the radar. We were coming in being talked up, but we didn’t have the depth and we couldn’t afford to sign both Retre and Nagasawa. We needed some Scrappy doos or Penningtons to do the running. Conchie is still developing.
If Rufer and Wootton (and Hughes?) are staying and wants Chief he stays. Tough on Kosta, but he’s back to not a guaranteed starter for mine. If we’re keeping Payne he must get a hearing too, though I don’t feel he’s a lock like Rufer. He’s a bit more inconsistent and has suffered under Chief, because he had an outstanding attacking season and was then told to make that his norm! If it was he’d not be playing A league. But he could have backed up better.
And yeh. We’ve needed another striker imo. Piper isn’t it. It reminds me of the 8 all rounders of the terrible Black Caps who couldn’t bat or bowl much, but could do a little of each. Ibusuki, Mata, Priovic…
Well we’ll see. It’s up to the club. Imo neither Brooke-Smith or Walker should be starting or guaranteed game day spots next season. Not because they’re poor, but they’re far from A league ready.
Eh. I’m agnostic cos I couldn’t watch this one. But when I watch the Nix I want some football.
If Chiefy stays, all our decent players who are out of contract will be gone. Kosta, Marco, Colakovski, Wootton & Sutton. Chico too but that was always a given. They're likely gone anyway, but Chiefy staying would take away any chance they stick around (though who knows if we'd even want Cola or Marco to stay given how little they've done for us. Cola may never get back to his best after the ACL and Marco may never be able to be relied upon to stay fit ever again)
The starting eleven last night looked great. Wootten, Rufer, Payne, Kosta, Rojas, Chico, Sutton all decent A-League quality starters. Ishigi, Nagasawe, Retre on the bench. Plus good academy players. And you tell me that is the best they can play? If this is not the coaches fault I don’t know. A few months ago I said a lot that I wanted to see progress, that was when we played boring as fudge but at least grinded some points. It all went worse, even Rufer lost the plot. The coach has to go, should have replaced 2 months ago, results and football could be not worth. I’m also pissed at management that they don’t see it or have the balls. They always talk about the fans and loyalty. Coaches and players go all the time but we stay. We deserve better. I can tell you I lost all trust in the coach and to extend management. If he stays I don’t buy a season ticket next year, give them money upfront for a sharkty product. I wait and see how it develops.
So after all that tripe and seeing us lose for the 4th game straight how does the YF react on the 29th March when we have WSW at hone? We'll have probably lost to Sydney two weeks before that and celebrated a win over Fiji in the middle.
Its time as fans we let Dome and Chiefy know how we are feeling about this utter trash-ball we are playing at the moment. Either Dome or Chief (or both) need to be gone before the end of the season, and maybe even Gill as well - he is afterall the man facilitating the transfers etc.

The ownership and coach haven't looked at the bigger picture this year with Auckland joining the league.
Viewership and interest of the league are at an all time high in nz. We should have been looking at marquees and keeping players like kraev, rather than just scrapping through. Also we need to make the game day an event (like auck have) rather than the same old..
This rubbish will just be turning more fans away. Another year of winning absolutely nothing.

Yes, we actually have decent players to make the finals. It's absolutely clear it's the coaches playing style that has taken the oomph out of this team. If we get a new coach in before the season has ended we can start layin the foundation for next year.

I said last week "same crap different opposition ". This was even worse. Defence is shocking and Scott Wooton is terrible, gives the ball away to easily, can't seem to jump as seen in recent corners. However the rest of the team were just as bad, can't pass, can't move into positions to receive the ball. I could go on and on but I will say that these players look like they don't want to be there. 1 shot on target over 90 minutes and that was fortunate. Only the Coach is to blame for putting a team like that out on the field. It seriously is time to go, sorry WAY past his time. If this continues we will no longer have a Wellington Phoenix. Is it any wonder that I look forward to watching the Phoenix woman playing ?

Same what the team does. Show up but sit there for 90 min in silence. Don’t drink, eat fries and pies.
Q: Presumably you haven't changed your approach and the way that you want your team to play you're still happy that that will bear fruit for you?
A: Nothing changes in my thinking, we all believe that it's the best way going forward, it's just a matter of getting the right personnel, cohesion, team chemistry and so on, if we thought that we're fundamentally off we would change it, but I don't think we've changed much in the last 12 weeks, I think we've defended the same, we've built up the same, so we've just gone more to more of a grounding for the players to have a good understanding of where they're at.
Truly astounding. How can things be going this bad for this long but Chiefy somehow doesn't even consider that his system might not be working, and clearly thinks it can only be a problem of implementation? image.png664.11 KB Here's some ideas for you Chiefy. How about actually having a midfield, a proper midfield 3, made up of actual midfielders. Playing 3/4 of Rufer, Nagasawa, Retre & FRC, NOT Sheridan. How about playing Payne at RB where he belongs and not putting him at RM so you can shoehorn Piper (who is NOT starting in the A-League quality) into your XI?
It was not a great starting ELEVEN. Nine maybe. Piper should not be starting in a decent A-League side. Probably good enough to be a bench utility, or a workhorse when things are tough. And Sheridan is not good enough as a midfielder to start in an A-League midfield. I'm not convinced that AKH is ready to be starting either. He's been decent and has a bright future but probably shouldn't be starting week in, week out just yet. number8

I meant we had a good ‘starting eleven’ with good backbone. I don’t blame Piper for anything, he just get thrown in. I don’t rate him at all, he won’t be playing next year under a new coacg. At one point he was starting ahead of OvH in attack. OvH did everything correct as a young impact player last year. Strong, fast, technical good. Goals, assists actually winning games for us. What happened? Sheridan, Hughes the Twins etc all play to their ability. The team was done after the second derby loss. Auckland broke us 😂

Everyone complaining about the system or the coach when the players are playing so poorly it doesn't matter who the coach is we're going to struggle. How many simple turn overs and misplaced passes, not under much duress, that put us directly under pressure, it was way too much.

But why are the players playing so bad?
I'd argue that a contributing factor is the fact they have no faith in the system they have been asked to play, or, if they do believe in the system, they don't have faith in their team mates to carry it out. Either way, that's a terrible position for a team to be in.
We were poor last night... but then again, remind me the last time we weren't poor. When was the last time we dominated and deserved to win a game.

People still backing Chief are in Fantasy Land.
Just hard to evaluate a system when the players are playing so poorly within that system.
A new coach bounce can be a thing because any change can get players out of a funk.
And last part, probably CCM (and maybe Roar) - other teams doing poorly this season.

The 2 are related and feed in to each other
The cycle is repeating on itself in a downward manner. The slide needs to be addressed before poor form becomes a genuine reduction in player ability, especially for the older lads who aren't benefitting from minutes alone like the young guys
If the club only wants to develop players to sell and chief is giving young ac demy players game time then they will probably stick with him. The only reason the club are silent is because all their excuses like travel, not being able to attract better players to live in NZ etc have been completely undermind by Auckland. We know they don't care about winning, they know we know they don't care about winning so why carry on with the illusion. Jokes on us I guess, we get to support an academy team.

The passing was especially awful yesterday. And the veterans were as guilty as the kids.
But if Chiefy has lost the dressing room, then the atmosphere becomes poisonous, players only give 90% not the full hundy, on field squabbles happen, cliques form - and the on field product looks pretty shark like it was the day before today.
I'd be in favour of Italiano just stepping aside until the season finishes. Going on a Klimkova type break. See if Griffiths/Greenacre can get a turnaround over the last 8 games. Be sort of Nix like to make a measured thought through approach on whether Chiefy stays or goes longer term.
about 1 year ago· edited about 1 year ago· History
Even the nix management and ownership know you need to see something resembling on field success for the young players to be able to shine and therefore be sold. Nobody is buying kids from a club of losers.
Contracts would be Gill & Italiano. It's never going to be perfect.
I mean the players also have a large say in the contract length. It may just be that Sutton wanted his Nix contract to finish this season, this year being his targeted year to move to Europe (or other ALM club as a fall back).
I was under the impression that once we got our injured players back (Rufer, Payne, Rojas) the good results would start coming. But instead we have conceded 11 goals and scored 2. We are broken from the top down.

People in the forum used this as an excuse, but now it’s clear that was hopeful thinking. Even Chico and Rojas back gave us nothing. Even a 2m target man in the box would do nothing. Maybe from a Piper throw in, that’s something he’s really good in.
That's all very well but I don't think that Chiefy was given a lot of money at the start of the season, and a large percentage of what he had has gone to the wages of Barbarouses, Rufer and Payne. Those guys needed to be kept around and it wasn't going to be cheap. As for a more attacking variety of football. I don't think that we have the squad for it. Our experienced players don't have the energy levels required. The remainder of the team are enhanced academy boys that would just leave massive gaps as they pushed forward too much. Like Perth did at the start of the season. Careful what we wish for. Dome out, I'll go along with that.
Has the club itself ever said anything about it being hard to attract players to NZ? i always thought it was just people in the forum. I never believed it, players play in all sorts of dubious places.Nommag
