Elsey suspended for the Jets, assuming Sasse will still be suspended for us.

Elsey's been given two games, Sasse's appeal result will be announced tonight. Absolute joke if it's not reduced to less than Elsey's one.

havent seen any update or reduction on the initial 3 games,

Did the Elsey red card end up being a straight red or a 2nd yellow? I only saw some highlights where the ref initially pulled out a yellow card. A mere yellow seems crazy.

VAR rescinded the second yellow and he was given a straight red instead.

Elsey got a straight red on VAR review. But only 2 weeks when Sasse got 3 from the initial disciplinary committee. that is plain unjust.
Lopez had a pretty high boot. Maybe he was lucky Sasse slipped.

They tend to have their FBs high up the pitch. Could certainly exploit those areas.

I read somewhere that the Sasse appeal is being heard this evening.

I checked the weather forecast for the cricket on Saturday (NZ vs Aussie T20 in Sydney same day as Nix match in Newcastle)... And now I'm worried the football might be in danger too. Thunderstorms all weekend by the looks of it in NSW.

Yan Sasse's suspension has been downgraded to 2 games meaning he will miss this week's game against the Jets.

Available from next week.

Two weeks still feels harsh when compared to Elsey's tackle.

I'm still assuming that Mauragis is unavailable for this match, haven't seen confirmation either way yet.

Bozinovski was on the bench for us against Victory in the cup and the league so Mauragis might be able to play.

I still think it was disgraceful that Sasse copped 3 games to begin with. Now they look like the good guys, having downgraded what was an absurd ban to begin with. The man slipped FFS. Look at the pic posted above, he's not even looking at his opponent.
Nothing new under the sun. We get shafted once again.

That is the only A-League loan that has happened with tho. The Victory waived that clause.

I'm not sure it means they look like the good guys, more that they just look vaguely incompetent, as we have unfortunately come to expect down the years. It's just another example of A League officialdom failing to apply a common sense interpretation to rules from the word go, leaving clubs and fans to pull their hair out in frustration at the logical inconsistency of it all.

Personally I think for the vast majority of red card offences a one match ban is perfectly fine. It's a more than adequate punishment for a player who hasn't shown a 'duty of care', as that irritating new cliche has it, towards his opponent. But now we've got this increasingly baffling sliding scale system of offences which seems to be in place more to keep the match review panel occupied than anything else.

With Elsey out even though he's not that great we should really exploit their back four, especially down the left side as we know McGarry gets caught out sometimes. Might be a game where we want Kosta up top to get them on the counter as they do like to push their fullbacks quite high.

Jets will look to dominate the possession and try to get in behind our defence, so I expect us to sit back and hit on the counter.

I expect a good game from Sotirio, especially with our slightly befuddled defence right now.  I would not mind giving Surman an outing, he was very good for a young bloke, last season.  Could give Wooton a bit of support where it matters, judging by the unchallenged first CCM goal last Sunday (that still rankles with me).

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

NEWCASTLE JETS v WELLINGTON PHOENIX

Newcastle Jets squad: Jack Duncan (gk), 2. Dane Ingham, 3. Jason Hoffman, 5. Matthew Jurman (co-captain), 6. Brandon O’Neill (co-captain), 7. Trent Buhagiar, 8. Beka Dartsmelia, 9. Beka Mikeltadze, 10. Reno Piscopo, 11. Jaushua Sotirio, 14. Mohamed Al-Taay, 17. Kosta Grozos, 18. Daniel Stynes, 19. Callum Timmins, 20. Michael Weier (gk), 23. Rory Jordan, 24. James McGarry, 25. Carl Jenkinson (co-captain), 26. Archie Goodwin, 30. Noah James (gk), 32. Angus Thurgate, 33. Mark Natta.

In: Archie Goodwin
Out: Jordan Elsey (suspended)

Squad analysis: Archie Goodwin is back in the Newcastle Jets squad after missing Round 2 through international duty with the Young Socceroos. Beka Mikeltadze got off the mark in Round 2 – Newcastle’s first game of the season after the opening-round washout of the F3 Derby – and the Georgian striker will look to continue to find the back of the net and keep pace with golden boot leader Jamie Maclaren.

Wellington Phoenix squad: 3. Finn SURMAN, 4. Scott WOOTTON, 5. Steven UGARKOVIC, 6. Tim PAYNE, 7. Kosta BARBAROUSES, 8. Ben OLD, 9. Oskar ZAWADA, 11. Bozhidar KRAEV, 13. Nicholas PENNINGTON, 17. Callan ELLIOT, 18. Ben WAINE, 19. Sam SUTTON, 20. Oli SAIL (gk), 21. Joshua LAWS, 23. Clayton LEWIS, 24. Oskar VAN HATTUM, 35. Noah KARUNARATNE, 36. Riley BIDOIS, 40. Alex PAULSEN (gk)

In: 35. Noah KARUNARATNE (promoted), 36. Riley BIDOIS (promoted)
Out: 12. Lucas MAURAGIS (ineligible to play parent club)
Unavailable: 10. David Ball (injured), 12. Lucas MAURAGIS (ineligible to play parent club), 14. Alex RUFER (injured), 31. Yan SASSE (suspended)

Squad analysis: Lucas Mauragis is ineligible to play against the Jets after his off-season loan from Newcastle to Wellington, leaving a vacancy in the Phoenix defence for head coach Ufuk Talay to fill. Higher up the park, the ‘Nix had Brazilian Yan Sasse’s three-game suspension reduced from three games to two – meaning he’s ineligible to contend for one of his side’s two number 10 positions for one more week.
Ben Waine, meanwhile is in brilliant form after scoring two goals in two games to start the campaign. The ‘Nix striker came off the bench in Round 1 before playing in Sasse’s place in Round 2 – and is impressing early doors.

Looking at the rain radar atm looks like rain is about to hit but might not be as bad as it sounded earlier. No Mikeltadze for the Jets which is very good for us going to be pacey front line with Buhagair and Sotirio but can be very hit-and-miss with finishing.

At least you would hope our boys should have a decent grip on how to defend sotirio. Stay goal side and force him to make a decision

I know it was offside so doesn't matter but If Sotorio had met that cross in a Nix shirt he would have somehow skied it over the crossbar, yet Jets jersey and all of a sudden hes got all the composure in the world.

Edit: same applies to mcgarry
