Des is still jobless.

Our squad isnt good enough... nor is our coach. We should have released our to Jap imports and fired Chief last season.

Des is coaching in Saudi
Actually Des is coaching in the Saudi Pro League, so he isn’t unemployed. Respectfully, I don’t think the club can outbid the Saudis for his services.

Enough with the Jap chat.

The problem with fielding players who aren't that good is that moves break down, chances are missed, through balls not seen so not played, possession is lost in 50 50s and with sharkty passes, etc
Conchie's improved, and this year IMO has been uninspiring but adequate. Sheridan's been giving too much ball away lately and hasn't kicked on as a player.
Better to field players who've shown they're capable of brilliance than ones who haven't and probably wont.
Loke for Sheridan and LBS for Conchie might not improve results (there's a bit of luck in soccer) but should be a lot more fun to watch. I can't see Sheridan on current form, or Conchie ever, being signed by any other A league team.
GSR and Supyk would've been my two dropped, rather than Edwards and LBS, unless there were injuries.
Idve subbed Rufer early second half too. He was understandably off today.
On the plus side, Oluwayemi, James, Eze and Nagasawa (mostly) looked excellent, and LKH continues to impress and improve.

we defend as a 5-4-1. sheridan, hughes and LKH are all defending well in that shape, but it's easier when you're playing in a compact manner like we do.

when we gain the ball, we're slow to transition out and we don't open the pitch quickly enough. therefore we cannot move the ball quickly and end up tapping the ball to each other for a while. armiento gets high and wide, but sheridan (understandably, as it's not the player he is) didn't do the same.

we're a jogging team. we need to develop a new habit of hitting the accelerator when required. like eze does.

another issue; occasionally eze gains a partner, but generally the 10s rotate back to the 6s. i don't understand this. we have 3 centre backs, one of the 6s drops in to the 3 to start the play. that makes 4 back. we even did this when auckland had 9 players. james is capable starting the play and the 6s could set a higher double screen, thus pushing the 10s higher. but we end up with a half back 6 and at least one 10 rotating back and the right side not stretched. this is not a valid attacking platform.

armiento needs quick ball. he's not a get in behind winger, hes a deliver guy. we need to play to his strengths and get the ball to him early. he should start high, peel off his marker, half turn and deliver, over and over again. we see it 2-3 times a game. if he's crossing, we need 10s getting high and at least one 6 joining them. the other wing back needs to be hitting the inside edge of the 18 yard box too. we need a plan of attack down the right for when tim paynes not there doing the same as armiento.

the high line, which i love in principle, would help with this approach. the key is where the wide guys are receiving the ball and them getting a first touch forward and the high line helps.

i think we need to look at our player's strengths, come up with a simple plan, with chance creation in mind (change to current mentality).

I'd maybe give Sheridan one more chance just because it has been so long since he played RB, but yes looks in danger of getting dropped and Loke coming straight back in.

This would be my starting team next week:

Josh
Hughes James LKH
Sheridan Rufer Nagasawa Edwards
Eze Piper Armiento

Piper is surely still on limited minutes?

Chiefy said this week he is good for 45 maybe more. By next week he will be worth starting even if we have to sub him on the hour

thats great news. i thought it was going to be much longer.

By the way, just to keep score, high line update - teams have taken full advantage by getting behind our backline and scoring in an embarassingly easy fashion in 3 out of our 5 games so far.

I would do anything to have a player like Brattan.. he can be a cod but my god the way he controls the game is outstanding.. the difference between him and Rufer today was day and night

I agree but Roofs arrived yesterday morning after 20+ hours travelling and 80 very tough mins midweek against Ecuador

Ridiculous to compare him to Brattan today after factoring in that

Why are you making excuses. It’s a professional game where two players are selected and playing. The opposition is exactly who we are compared to in a competitive environment.

Just finished watching the replay. That was a dire performance. Except Eze who's work rate was high (as always) and our keeper who kept us in it with some great saves.
I think sometimes Eze does TOO much. When he tracks back to defend out of possession, and drops deeper to get on the ball more when we do have the ball, we're often missing a spearhead in attack.

This left us either having to try work it through a very congested midfield, or our wingbacks, of which Armiento was very isolated and Sheridan didn't offer too much going forward. And our attack would would have to delay until we had a player or two in the box. As a result, we had to play it sideways/backwards or we'd just straight up losing the ball.

Surprised LBS wasn't in the squad at all, did he have exams maybe?

Hard to be optimistic after that game. We really have a lite weight squad. Apart from a half fit Piper we have zero impact players off the bench. The injuries of Payne and Ishigi have cost us. In addition we have had almost no playing time from Walker, Mulisic or Retre.
Apart from Walker all these players have plenty of pro match experiance. We are having to play too many of the youngsters.
Only real positives are Josh who had a good game and Eze. That guy is a beast. Runs his butt off and is amazingly skillful. He would be killing the A League if he was playing for a good team.

The next 2 games should really be finals for Chief. If we lose again next week at home, or lose our 5th derby in a row the week after that (beyond embarrassing) he NEEDS TO GO.

Pretty much like for like goals from the first in the Auckland game too, and exactly what has been covered by A-League scribes and journos over the past few weeks, with Sawyer standing several metres offside when the ball was played down the left - He has a jump on recovering defenders and gets the ball crossed in perfectly and he puts it away...

id like it ideally before the next derby, because right now the loss in the derby is a sure thing. But, if we get a new manager we might get that honey moon period and just pull out a win.

The amount of excuses Rufer gets on this forum is unreal. He is bang average and if he went as a free agent, nobody would sign him in the A-League.

I would drop LKH, Sheradan, Conchie, Najjarine. Seems extreme and harsh but none have really shown enough to be nailed on starters IMO.

 Start Edwards, Loke, Cassidy, GSR.

Gotta try something different, we are way too passive and slow on the ball, particularly when we get the ball at the back and just stand on it, pass it sideways, backwards, etc, etc.

Also if we lose our next two games we could be 10 pts behind AFC after 7 games. Chief out. He is the worst coach in the league and it's not even close.

So many attackers do that, and have done since they changed the rules about 20yrs ago. CCM did it, Perth did it. It wasn't even really a high line at that point, just a through ball that attacking players can get to because they don't have to turn - it was just not well read by James. Sawyer wasn't even that far off James to start with, like almost in arms reach.

Questions got to be asked of players like Conchie, Sheridan, Hughes and those guys who have several years in the system and haven’t really produced anything of quality.. Conchie for example has shown glimmers of what he can do and looked very good a few u20 world cups back.. but really hasn’t shown anything resembling what he’s capable of.. is it a coaching thing? Or it’s just who he is as a footballer?

its because we have the worst coach in the league who seems like he cannot develop anyone

Exactly, it's not difficult to see what's going on - so defenders need to play deeper.

I ain't gonna criticise any individual players too much,I think they have been coached to mediocrity and robotics - they are so one dimensional, negative and all creativity, innovation and surprise seems to have been removed from them.

Rather than change the players, I'd like to remove all the garbage that has been placed in their heads...

Luke Brooke-Smith? Loke? Cassidy?

Bang average by A league standard, which would mean better than half the league?

Chief has been at the club since 2019, so has worked with players for more than the last two seasons.

Bizarre comment. Blind Freddie can see it's a valid excuse.

Rufer played nearly a full game midweek on the other wide of the world, then flew against the International Date Line, to arrive a day before kick off.

I'm no medical professional, and neither clearly are you, but that's not ideal prep to play a game of football.

Luke Brattan has been busy training with his Macarthur team mates, the last 2 weeks. Sitting down watching Nix videos in Campbeltown hatching a plan how they would deal with the talked about Welly high line.

I had a work mate back in the day, who after travelling back from the States took 2 days off work due to 'jetlag'. She needed you in the office to give her a good slap to snap her out of it.

So why did he play a full game? Surely a responsible leader within the team will advise to play him either half, 30 minutes but a full game when he’s clearly tired just seems silly, at this level if you’re fit enough to play, you have no excuses with tiredness despite travel, and today Brattan took him to the cleaners. On this topic, Retre is basically stealing a wage at this point, what’s the latest on him? Was suppose to be our most senior players, having won titles in the a league, is not sighed at all.. how are so many players made of glass in this team.. so frustrating

Even a jaded Rufer is quality by the standards of this current Nix squad.
Plus he's the captain the beating heart of the club. Having him on the pitch does lift others. He knows with so many injuries, the team is struggling and he's needed. So he puts up his hand to play.

The fact that the Auckland game finished as a painful watch with him as the primary central playmaker, against only 9 men, emphasizes the poor quality attack this Nix team has.

Agree re Retre. He's been a flop to date.
Owes Chiefy and the club, a consistent run quality performances when he finally returns.

Have you been drinking?

A) how do you go from a comment about football to violence in the work place.

B) Im not commenting as to whether Rufer played well or not. Just that his play is directly compared to the opponents as it’s a professional game.

C) I’ve reported your post for suggesting I advocate or use violence.

D) you don’t know what my profession is. Maybe leave the personal attacks out of your comment.

Enough with the Jap chat.

Why... both were not good enough last year. 1 is out for the year this year  and the other... wouldn't make another A League side pushing for a top 6 spot.

If I can argue for Chief to go... why can't I them??

Heaven forbid what the crowd may be like next weekend if the weather is bad but even if it’s good it may be the lowest in history.
