It's been a while since we've had a pre-season visitor - should be good!
Wrexham have just got promoted to the English Championship (despite being Welsh).
Should be pretty competitive?

Probably not that different to how it does now, other than Wootton and Sutton. I suppose we'll know about Chico before then?

Barba tbc, I've heard rumors both ways on that one.

Who cares how great for the young guys to play against them. Its pre season 4 months before the season starts who cares about the result.

Genuinely surprised and impressed by this. When would this likely be? Typically I think I’ll be away for it, but if it’s the last weekend of July, I’ve got a shot 😬

Well this is surprising news if true.  Maybe Rob and Ryan have pressing business with Weta FX, or James Cameron or Peter Jackson.  Or that our Chairman is also called Rob.  Or perhaps they like that our teams both start with W, and have an X as Oi Oi Edgecumbe said.

Great for our youngsters to potentially get in the shop window and noticed.

Maybe Auckland are planning to bring agruably bigger fish to NZ like Bournemouth and Hibs?

Wrexham toured Nth America last July playing the Cherries and Chelsea in California. Then the Vancouver Whitecaps north of the border. Ryan Reynolds being a Vancouver native.

NZ U20 rep Finn Linder (Caps II) actually played in that 3rd game, getting a temporary contract with the Whitecaps first team, as being in an international window, were a heap of regular 1st teamers absent. Wrexham cantered to a 4-1 win. Might be a similar result in Welly, especially if Wrexham strengthen their squad having been promoted, and having open EPL ambitions.

I imagine will be mid July as teams don't want to be over the other side of the world in late July as its too close to the season start, and they will want friendlies close to home at that time.

I heard a rumour that July 12th was being looked at for the Melbourne Victory game, so probably would be around then

They can have Bournemouth and Hibs, Wrexham has the global pull for all the Deadpool fans. I'm sure there will be the odd Hibs and Bournemouth fan in NZ but they wont be as exciting as Wrexham are.

Believe Bournemouth are heading to the USA for their preseason.

Apart from a name premier league club, Wrexham should be just as desirable for the neutral.

Well done to the Nix getting this over the line as you would think they would have had competition from Perth or Brisbane.

Auckland will rise once more

I believe there is an All Black test at the stadium on 12 July so Sky Stadium will be unavailable for that weekend anyway. If they are playing the Victory on the 12th, maybe they'll be here the following weekend?

It would certainly make Wellington a better 'Away day' destination for any travelling Wrexham fans - being the only Welsh Pub in the southern hemisphere, also probably one of the only pubs in NZ where you can get Wrexham Lager and Brains

Out of curiosity what makes it Welsh, serving Brains and maybe faggots?

Other then that, Welsh pubs are the same as English and Scottish ones. Kiwi pubs are generally soulless so at least having a theme might make the likely overpriced beer a little more palatable.

Mr Jones is from Stoke…
Edit:
From the reviews:

Most of the world in one place
Irish, italian, japanese, peruvian... All dishes I tried were well prepared and tasteful. Cool people. Lively place!

I don’t think you could be confused about the Welshness of the Wellington location…unlike this review above!

Quotes from the email from David Dome and Rob McElhenney & Ryan Reynolds:

Wrexham has shot to international prominence since Hollywood stars and entrepreneurs Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchased the third oldest football club in the world in 2021, and it has since been featured in the Emmy award-winning Welcome to Wrexham docu-series.

The Red Dragons last month clinched a record-breaking third promotion in three years to secure their place in English football’s Championship.

“We’re delighted to be welcoming Wrexham to Wellington,” Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome said. “The capital has a proud history of hosting New Zealand’s biggest football events, and this promises to be another unmissable match at Sky Stadium.

"Wrexham have had an incredible rise to the Championship and I know our players can't wait to test themselves against the Red Dragons.

“I also look forward to catching up with Rob and Ryan over a pint of Wrexham lager at The Welsh Dragon, the only Welsh bar in the southern hemisphere!”

Wrexham will open their pre-season tour in Melbourne against Victory on Friday, July 11 before taking on Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night (July 15).

The Wrexham Down Under Tour follows on from two highly successful pre-season tours to the USA, the first in 2023 which included a clash against Manchester United followed by the Wrex Coast Tour in 2024 with the headline fixture against another Premier League side in Chelsea.

Wrexham AFC Co-Chairmen, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, commented:

“The summer tour to Australia and New Zealand promises to be the latest chapter in the amazing story of Wrexham Football Club.

“Following our record-breaking hattrick of promotions, which will see us playing in the Championship next season, we felt it was time for a new challenge on our summer tour.

“So, what better than playing three matches in Australia and New Zealand.

“It will be a great way for all our Wrexham fans down there to see the team and, anyway, we couldn’t resist signing off with a tag line so, Up The Town Down Under!”
