exactly, at home we have tended to play a 4 - 3 - 3 line up, with Daniel, ifill and greenacre pushing forward - why reduce it to two, away we use the 4 - 5 - 1, which I hate....

can't see any changes in the starting lineup, caceras on the bench would be ace instead of Ferrante, with maybe Chen - who knows, all depends on how they train I suppose

Exactly! 3 up front and no less, sh*t why not make it 4!
4-3-4 like in my u17 days, oh the memories.

Okay.

actually it seems to me we are playing one up front. (Greenacre) with Ifill, Bertos behind.

but you see, Greenacre is isolated up front with no support. He gets out numbered too easily.

thus my first post.

This has turned into the catch cry of the month - ridiculous considering we are playing Daniel, Ifill, Greenacre up there with Leo joining

So you want our two most creative players (Leo and Ifill) to stand in the middle up front with Greenacre and wait for the likes of Lia and Brown to create chances?

4-3-3 is thought of as more attacking than 4-4-2, you would think. Of course it reverts to a 4-5-1/4-2-3-1 when we are defending.

I was one who was calling for 4-4-2 as well but we've been attacking and defending pretty well - why change it?

Coming up from CHCH for this fixture. Will be my 4th time in the zone. Can't wait! As yet to head to the Backbencher before a game so will definitely head there prior. Hopefully one of my vic mates from Nelson will come. Always hard to get non-football people to come along. Imagine there must be loads of Vic students that avidly support them?

Great to see the Phoenix management noticing the marketability of Fowler. He is on the new posters. God in Godzone.

It needs changing cos it aint working good enough..we are dropping points like there is no 2moro and with the defence coughing up 1 goal per game at least we need to score 2 to win.  Im open to correction in a month or so but i cant see the current formation delivering that..we need two stikers upfront and Ifill wide right.  I dont buy inti Rickis comments today that its all going well and that Smeltz is not missed.  Im sounding like a worn record but...

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

no, what i want is Greenacre up front with Ifill.

or anyone up with Greenacre. So we have at least 2 up front. Then the likes of Bertos can join them when we are attacking. Then he drops back on the wing when we are defending.

like wise on the other side with Daniel/Caceras.

Ricki often puts one up front but that guy has no support, kind of like Smeltz last year. the lone striker.

it just doesn't work.

that's all i am trying to say.

I would tend to agree. However I do think that in most of our attacks into the melbourne box on saturday we did have numerous players forward and greenacre had daniel or brown or bertos or ifill in the box supporting him on attack when crosses were delivered.

the question still stands though from above, if you are going to play two up front, where is the creativity going to come from in the middle of the park? If you are playing Leo and Daniel out wide,we are resting a lot on the passing abilities of brown and lia...without a  box to box midfielder (which we don't have), 442 isn't an option IMO

I think we need to play a 4-1-3-2 with someone like Caceres in the middle, between Leo and Daniel.

you guys need to get away from all this "formation" bollocks in regards to a player like Ifill... he IS playing "up front", the thing is he ISN'T a striker, he's a player who is always going to drift between midfield and attack and around the flanks.

It's not as simple as picking a pretty formation and then finding the players that suit each position. Players are given... or, in general, as with Ifill, are NATURALLY... assigned a ROLE rather than a position.

I.e. replace Ifill with Robbie Fowler, and BOOM you have two natural strikers. But missing the link man which is so necessary.

As cultured as Che Bunce's left foot and as profilic as John Lammers

I'd imagine unless we see an injury Ricki will keep the same team. He hardly ever tinkers with a successful (enough) formula. Maybe Caeceres on the bench for Rojas though? Seems silly Siggie won't be on though so maybe he'll slot in somewhere, although Mckain and Durante seemed to have a good partnership going.

No Rojas? I sincerely hope not. He proved in 10 minutes what an impact he can make. Nearly created a last second winner.

Times like these that a bench of 4 becomes so limiting. If McKain is slightly dodgy, then Siggy will be on the bench at least. Other two? Rojas & Hearfield I would guess. Maybe time for Chen (instead of Hearfield) to provide a true up front option on the bench.?
That's just plain crazy talk. Caceres will get on the bench, or the field, way ahead of Marco. This whole thing threatens to become another "Play Costa" scenario, because?????If you want him to play regularly, get our youth team running

Crazy talk to suggest that Rojas should keep his place on the bench?

They're coming to take me away ha ha, they're coming to take me away he he!

I know, I know, its serious!

Ahead of midfield options Caceres, Ferrante, Lia, Brown, Daniel, Leo, Troy, McKain and possibly Chen who we haven't seen. Yes.

But my pretty 4-4-2 is TWICE as attacking as your 4-2-3-1.  See. Mine has TWO strikers and yours has ONE.  It's irrelevant how the players move and what lines players take on the field, what matters is the pretty graphic lineup that appears pre game.

100% agreed. It's like if you put Leo 'up front' - he would drift wide anyway. Same with Ifill. Not a natural striker.

Sounds like Daal's gone

Short-term signing Dyron Daal's stint with North Queensland Fury is over after the
return to fitness of Scottish defender Scott Wilson.

Wilson, out with a foot injury since the pre-season, will sit on the bench on Sunday when the Fury take on Wellington Phoenix in Wellington.
