It's an interesting one. I'm guessing, from a sponsorship point of view, the exposure wouldn't be as much, so the "bigger" players wouldn't be aboard, so it might need a number of smaller scale sponsorships.

A lot will come down to businesses who see it as a good fit for their brand, and can make it work for them even if the exposure isn't that great. I think it'd be good for Mojo as a way of growing and strengthening their partnership with the Nix.
I can see them using the bigger profile of the Central Pulse (who they sponsor as well) to help boost the profile of the Lady Nix if they decided to do some kind of marketing/PR event like the barista challenge they had between the Nix Mens and the Pulse this year (was on 3 News Sports). There's ways to make it work for them. Plus they'd get some exposure in Australia if they were looking to expand across the ditch.

Some of the American teams stream their games for free or have them on youtube, and I think only one charges for it.
I think it's a great way to get people watching them and growing the profile of the game. Would be good to see a highlights package/full games on the likes of Prime in the case of the W-League (and A-League)

I’m banging my head against the wall, despite a number of very good reasons articulated in here on why Women’s football is likely to flounder the only responses to the contrary are things like:
For God’s sake, will somebody please tell me, how this will work when no other women’s sport in NZ [and I think Australia] has been able to go professional and sustain it? If the Nix are losing money running a men’s team/s, why on earth would they want to lose more money by having a women’s team that has no show of making money?
Anyone?
What has been missed though is that there is still a lack of recognisable female NZ football role-models in the kiwi/women's sporting conscious.
For us here on the forum, we know that only the women have had players make 100+ full international caps, I'm betting most people who follow NZ football, male or female, would not know that.
While many many kiwis will be familiar with the likes of Ryan Nelsen, Wynton Rufer, Winston Reid, Shane smeltz etc, how many would know Maia Jackman, Abby Erceg (Highest capped player male or female), Amber Hern (Highest goal scorer male or female), Ria Percival etc.
Women's football needs the same awareness and recognition that women's rugby and netball gets and if a FeNix team does it, so be it.

After watching the opening two games here in Canada and seeing all the young Canadian girls proudly wearing their female club team shirts/women's national team shirts, I can't help but think a women's team (only needs to be semi pro) would do wonders for the Nix and NZs many girls and young women.
It was a great atmosphere yesterday.
Having a female football team would give womern here something to strive for if they love their football. Not m,uch good from going local league to International. Here is a step ladder for them to get some sort of balance and experience. I believe there is a place for it. Some of the women at the U17 WC here showed more skill and ability than some of the guys currently at the U20.

If the sponsor that is pushing for the women's team is Huawei, I would not be at all surprised if most, if not all, of the funding would come from sponsorship, making it at least a cost-neutral proposition. The major cost to an NZ team would be travel, especially if they have to cover expenses for visiting teams, but if Huawei finds the benefit to themselves is greater than the cost of underwriting the Fe-nix, then they could simply increase their sponsorship of the Nix as a whole in accordance with the cost.
Does anyone know what the per-season numbers are on the Huawei deal? Because the obvious pitfall for my theory is that they don't actually put that much into the Nix as it is.
The club would probably be making the biggest profit in the league with a deal that big.
If we only funded sports teams to make a profit, there wouldnt be a Phoenix to support..

Great piece from Ella, its hard to argue against that a W-League team is the natural progression for women's football in NZ becoming more professional. Looking forward to the Nix taking more steps for it to happen (and to NZF/FFA throwing up less barriers going forward).
