I'll put this here. Putting aside the issue of whether there should be transfer fees in the ALM, what a massive jump in transfer fee income for the ALM clubs post 22/23 season. $12M compared to $2M post 21/22 season.

I guess Waine was part of that, otherwise that's all the treansfer fee income the Nix had. Which is again why I think they will be hoping to cash in on Old, Surman, Paulsen and maybe even Rufer before their contracts expire. Most of the other clubs are doing very well with transfer fees, the Nix will be keen for some of that action as well.

Overall good for the financial health of the ALM, after losing Fox Sports big TV rights income and now the big loss on Keep Up. Can see the league maturing into a more development type league, promoting young players to sell up north, and having less expensive marquees. Sounds like the older big names all want Saudi cash these days anyway.

Would have also picked up small percentages of the fees in Bell, Mata and McCowatt's transfers as training compensation.

Same apply whenever likes of Tyler Boyd & Calvin Harris transfer MLS clubs for a fee?

I wonder if they factor in sell on's in that - whilst it may not be huge currently, I would think this is where they expect to make the most money moving forward in the future.

Gauchi (sorry on spelling) etc might have a nice clause there.

Dome has said pretty much that very thing, they want to invest in the youth through the academy so they can make the big bucks with transfers and future payments as the players move clubs, they see it as their only way to survive/grow the club.

MLS holds their contracts centrally, so not sure that would trigger anything.

All the Marco to Auckland chatter has gotten very quiet... What odds the Nix enquire about him if the likes of Kraev Zawada and maybe even Ben Old go?

Chiefy when he was made head coach and Rojas was (or was just about to become) a free agent mentioned Marco was on a list of people he'd like to talk to, but nobody at the Nix (or Marco himself) has commented on whether there was ever a conversation or enquiry made about the possibility of him coming here.

I know a few people on here always say he will never come back to the Nix, and they've up until this point been proven right repeatedly, but there is nothing concrete to say it'll never happen. I'm sure there wouldn't have been many people picking him to go to the Roar rather than returning to the Victory.

That interview you posted in the Rojas thread makes me wonder if he will consider hanging up the boots in the off season. He didn't seem all that committed to finding a team for next season right away. But I guess he knows a player of his talent will always be able to find an ALM club pretty easily.

Surely two seasons with the Nix, World Cup, retire.

I didn't get that vibe at all (that he might retire any time soon). He sounded motivated to try and make the 2026 World Cup squad to me. But I agree, the way he didn't seem particularly bothered about nailing down a deal somewhere for next season in any sort of hurry did seem a bit odd.

You can understand wanting to take each day/week/game/contract as it comes, and seeing what happens and what feels right. But very few people are in the privileged position where they can live that way. Imagine if he does his ACL in the last game of the season for the Roar for example, he likely wouldn't be getting another professional contract until the 2025/2026 season. Perhaps he has invested his career earnings very wisely and is very wealthy and doesn't have to be worried about something like that happening, otherwise to me it seems like a big gamble with your career/livelihood.

Rojas must have made good coin in his career, he gave $20k to the Melbourne Victory women's program and then took six month off football.

$20k is really a pittance in the scheme of things, in the context of the running of a even semi-professional football team. Was a bit of a bizarre thing to do. Perhaps he was trying to subtly send a message that Victory were really neglecting their women's side otherwise it doesn't really make sense. If you were truly wealthy you'd give a lot more than that. I'm not a wealthy person but I spent that on an elective surgery once.

It still means he has 20k lying around.

And the victory do neglect their teams, even their men's team trains on public parks and uses public facilities.

Not sure the Nix are really interested in signing any Kiwis now, outside their Academy.

Surely its the right move to stay you have a coach that believes in you and will give you minutes. Or go try your luck in Europe/Brazil where you'll be stuck behind in an academy with tons of other talented footballers?

Tough call. Similar to us being in OFC. Sod all football, but it will get us to the World Cup.

And if you look at Libby and Sarpreet there’s definitely chances to get into the top leagues through the Nix and the A league.

Seems a little early for him to be going somewhere else, only 16. You'd think that he'd hang around for maybe a year or two until he's developed more and had more chances.

On what basis are other teams in for him? An off-hand comment from Chiefy months ago that didn't even mention him by name, that he was this really great talent? He hasn't had any minutes for the senior team. Has his performances for the Nix reserves been turning heads big time? That's if he has made appearances for the reserves, I wouldn't know

He hasn't been in the public eye of course, plying his trade at age-grade level, but he's had hype through club and national setups for a few years now, since about 13. Scouts and agents talk, and they know their stuff

I definitely don't have $20k lying around.  If it got given to the players that would be a nice little bump for each of them.

That's awesome stuff. No guarantees of course in football, but that's a strong pull for him to hopefully stay in NZ. I vaguely recall people on here saying Chiefy sounded indifferent to the possibility of extending his deal though, although that's perhaps him keeping his cards close to his chest in what is amounting to an unprecedented season in Phoenix history. Who knows. 🤷‍♂️

He doesn't always get all the plaudits but he's one of the first names on the team sheet each week for mine.

As a new father myself, big congratulations to them both as well. A magical time in anyone's life.

I wouldn't say Chief was indifferent, he was just being realistic and thinking that Kraev would be able to return to Europe based on his performances here. Whether Kraev wants to or not is a different story. His partner might want to travel the world for all we know.

Anyway, hopefully a future All White and not a Lion.

I thought the opposite. Outside Wootton, Kraev is his favourite import because he is super adaptable and while he hasn’t had high peaks, he usually plays fairly well consistently?

Babies change everything.

A new mum may want to stay closer to home than be on the other side of the world without a support network.

Although, if he earns enough coin, the idea of being able to be a stay at home mum and not worry about having to go back to work etc etc might also hold some appeal, if not an option here in NZ.

Well we must be paying BK around $300,000 per season right? That should be enough to live a good lifestyle in Wellington with a family right?
In my opinion for a pro football player and a relatively high class lifestyle you probably need around $250-300k  per year...

If he was to move overseas how much would this increase?

Not sure how many here are realistically able to comment, but I would say that Kraev's Kiwi partner would find it hard to follow to an unknown European (or Asian) city with a small baby without her whanau support, and her partner away every second weekend.  If a club in New Zealand or in Australia makes him a decent offer after his current contract expires this looks more likely an option she would agree to  rather than going to an unknown city halfway across the world.

Yeah that would be a fair call. Though a Bulgarian English speaking nanny would be pretty cheap, and a great help if Kraev left for elsewhere. Can be good fun raising kids in a bilingual household. Apparently it can help their learning development, and with 50% papa's genes, my ninas for example need any edge they can get.

At about 13 mins in, near the end of this pre Roar press conference, Chiefy talks about uncertainty already for next season, re salary cap budgets. The failure of KeepUp, meaning further belt tightening by the APL?

At least the Nix will have one of their best gate revenue seasons for awhile. Plus prospect of selling 1-3 players in the off season for some nice transfer fees.

Want to gauge the feeling on something I've been pondering

Kosta's obviously had a great goalscoring season and has been vital to our title charge, but how would you feel about a visa upgrade for his exact role in the offseason? Someone with his physical attributes and workrate, but with upgraded technical ability and playmaking chops.

I feel we could extract even more G+A out of that role than Kosta has with the way we play - it's such a vital role that it could prove a worthwhile investment

Whilst I can totally get on board with that sentiment, I think the fact that he’s a local and a league legend, I think does a lot for bringing up the younger boys around him. I’ve no idea if that’s true, but that’s certainly the impression I get. I think that’s invaluable.

I think there's other areas that need import attention more than replacing our most productive player of this season. I'd much rather use them in CB/CM/CAM/ST as we currently are. Better to use the limited spots to fill the big holes in the team rather than make marginal upgrades on good, local players that we can retain. I'd consider it for the 5th import slot if Ball naturalises but it's definitely low on the priority list.

The problem with visa players is they're an unknown quantity. Sure, we have a pretty good record in terms of signing visa strikers, but at this point we know what Kosta can do and what he brings to this team. He's ageing but I think he has at least a couple of years at this level left, probably more if he continues to look after himself and he's lucky on the injury front.

So I'd like a visa CF as well as Barba for next season.

I agree with Sam that I’d like to see an import striker with Kosta’s profile. I wouldn’t see it as a Kosta replacement though, he would be replacing Zawada.

We’ve seen that two strikers with similar profiles can work really well together - Krishna and Williams.

That’s because Williams is really an unsung genius and figured how to keep out of his way!

Here’s another thought- Chief may have further tactical surprises for next season and may wish to evolve our style.

As well we may see more of Supyk, Sloane-Rodrigues and Conchie from next season?

Long story short- I don’t know. I’m just going to trust Chief. If we’re Premiers this year I might be forced to miss next year after the lengthy celebratory off season! I’m guna wake up at the Macchu Piccu with Slater, Jon Clarke’s ashes and wearing the AFC jersey worn by the pitch invader with an Ali Williams is a God! tattoo, a stuffed tuatara in a box and 50kgs of kava.

Kosta’s form in part relates to Kosta’s comfort with everything- Wellington, family, the league…he’s been at home in many of the major stadiums in the league.

But it would give us something to talk about in the off season!
