After little to no coverage this week in the lead-up to the game it's been good to see it in the media the last couple of days. Was a little annoying to see the Herald put it at only no.4 on their "best sport to watch this weekend" list. Behind both F1 and NCAA basketball as well as the Warriors (suspiciously sponsored by NZH) at no.1

I dont mind the warriors being put at #1, I'm even ok with F1 being in the list, but NCAA is an odd choice to have ahead of your local professional footy league.

It will be NCAA because of the female phenom whose name I forget who is apparently going to change the game at WNBL level.

Average salary is 70k apparently - she's being offered 5 million a season by the 3x3 league to go there instead. WNBL will counter.

Female basketball games are getting record viewership every week. Huge story in the states.

But really, cmon the NIX!

Caitlin Clarke, yep. NCAA are in their 'March Madness' knockout tournaments at the moment with the men's and women's competitions at the semi-final stage. Those games are at about 2pm on Saturday so in a good time slot but still, shouldn't be ahead of one of the biggest games of local sport there's been this year.

Not a mention on the Rock sports programme even though this is surely the most important kiwi sporting event of the weekend.

Auckland media in general have this weird obsession with Rugby, Cricket and Netball. Local Basketball also gets the raw end of the media stick. It's gonna be a tough gig for even the new Knightys to challenge the media status quo.

The guys on the Rock gush over the Breakers but never mention the Nix and as I understand it, they do sports programmes for TV3. Feel free to correct me as I've not watched TV3 since 2006 and I know its in the shark.

Zawadas latest one was him training and saying it's impossible to stop someone who never gives up.
I didnt find it cryptic at all, it's clearly about his recovery and how he is continuing to work hard to get fit.

From Stuff just now, I hope the editor improves. This is a review for tonights important game against the Jets.

"History
The Phoenix and Newcastle have met 48 times over the years, with the Phoenix winning 25, Victory winning 17 and 6 draws. The Phoenix have a 9-3-10 record against the Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium. The two teams have met twice already this season. The Jets stunned the Phoenix 3-0 in Wellington in round seven but the Phoenix got their revenge in Newcastle in round 14, snatching a dramatic 2-1 win thanks to a late goal from Zawada."

Frustratingly enough the Warriors seem to be at no.1 in this (opinionated) list every week, despite being 7th with a 3-1-2 record.

Meanwhile the championship-chasing Nix with an opportunity to move into 1st place with a round and a bit to go are nowhere to be seen.

Goes back to the main point of the original post - the NZ sports media (with the exceptions already noted) don't cover the game, so they're not over the details, even for major decisions like the GF one (although they can give you chapter and verse on EPL & UCL when the mood takes them).

Substantial 5min Ifill interview on National Radio Morning Report this morning, on Nix flying high.

Wellington Phoenix soar at the top of the men's A League | RNZ

Good chat, but Corin Dann seemed to imply that even if we got to Grand Final we would have to play it in Sydney.  Is that still a thing? I thought that "deal" was abandoned after last year.

I went out for a few beers sat, was never heading to the game. Long story.

Anyway, two big pubs (with multiple screens) in Petone were playing the Highlanders game, with barely anyone watching.

Both times I asked for it to be swapped over. and they did. But it just shows that we are such a boring rugby country. Some pointless rugby game is seen as more important than a big local foodball game..

Yup, and this is why the SF isn't going to sell out, might not even get close to 30,000 as much as I'd like it to, because the ticket price can't/shouldn't be compared to how much Warriors or other rugby code ticket prices are for finals because it doesn't matter - they aren't valued by the casuals as highly as those codes, no matter how you try and put it.

Heaps of NIX Coverage this morning on the Radio - I listened to two stations on the way to work (via a stop at the doctors) and both had an interview that was based on the NIX - one with Italiano and another guy I didn't recognise.

Plenty of chat and kudos for the team. Ian Smith particularly glowing and promoting the SF.

Ian Smith has always had a healthy soft spot for football in this country, probably helped along by the fact his son was a former All White.

Enjoyed the same chat, although didn't catch the whole thing.

Long may the praise and chatter around the game in this country continue!

That "other guy" was David Dome, interviewed by RNZ Morning Report at about 8:20am.  Was good stuff and was good to hear it.

I know this might be stretching it.... but I think there is an ingrained fear of supporting a football team on (effectively) an international stage because we might be shown up as never good enough.  If the Nix lose a game the comments on (say) Stuff are awful.
But as soon as we have a consistently good season, there is a cautious / grudging / following among general public, because the NZ public only supports winning teams.  Possibly the same happened with the Breakers in the past.

Absolutely this. My (kiwi) wife said the same after I commented about how hilarious it was our non football liking (very much rugby and cricket) neighbour was talking to me about the game on the beach. I didn’t really know how to engage as I knew it wasn’t legit interest 😂

But we don't have the Australian attitude of winning at any cost - even if it means cheating - blatant cheating.

Yet the Phoenix have still struggled for big crowds this season which has been by far their most successful. Whereas the very average Warriors can get 15,000+ every game.
