Ha.
In an ideal world we'd need a roof right around. It's Wellington.

I would recommend a quick look at the MLS and Soccer Specific stadiums.
The Colorado Rapids have their stadium miles away from downtown Denver unlike ice hockey/basketball (Pepsi Centre) baseball and NFL (Mile High Stadium) who are all in the centre of town. No public transport (train anyway) to the stadium when I lived there but the people of CO loved the stadium built for football and the way the Rapids and the stadium has been sold to them.
Being a Waikato boy I'm not familiar with the transport problems of Wellington but managed to go to all Knights games while I was still living in NZ and a lot of Kingz games even though I was a student in Palmy.
I always felt Aucklander's were lazy, the Knights could have played at North Harbour, Eden Park or Mount Smart and the same crowd numbers would have turned up. I have a feeling Nix attendances would be similar whether in central Wellington or further out.
Totally support the idea, take a look at Dean Court in Bournemouth, completely rebuilt 10 years ago for 6.5 million quid. If it's like this I will be down from Palmy for every game!
Just need a highly localised earthquake to destroy the RoF at a time when it is completely deserted, and then stick a rectangular stadium where the RoF used to be.
Problem solved.
Goonertron keeps saying that this would be the only big sporting thing in the Hutt Valley since the speedway. Er, I'm old enough to remember the Hutt Valley Lakers playing at the Walter Nash Stadium, featuring "Crosstown" Tony Brown. (You could also include the year that all first-class cricket was played at the Hutt Rec while the Basin was being refurbished.)
But I'd have to agree with all those people who say that a great stadium won't be worth a damn if it's a bitch to get to. Three letters: N, H, S. One easy, serious quick fix is to rope off the upper half of the RoF so we can get "capacity" with a crowd of 15,000. It'll look better on TV.
NHS cold... Try Porirua Park during pre-season.
Haha yeah good call. Another point I want to reemphasize is how far away you are from the game. With 55 inch HDTV's being quite affordable. It is really a put off going to the cake tin and the players are smaller than they would be on your tv. I want to be meters away from the game. So the opposition cant think over the chanting.
And I want a pony.
We sit in row z. can see everything fine. the roof amplifies the chanting and keeps us dry. nothing wrong with the ROF.
#cakefuckingtin
You have just got too used to the stadium. Go to england or even australia you are so close to the pitch. It really is a huge factor in getting butts off the couch and into the stadium.
EDIT : Jebus I broke the site. So many duplicates.
Go to Christchurch and you are so close to the pitch at the new rectangular AMI stadium in Addington which was built post-earthquake in a matter of just over three months. Extremely earthquake-proof and cost 30 million to build. Owned by a charitable trust chaired by Jim Anderton. Temporary home of Canterbury rugby but in future will revert back to principle use by the land-owners, Canterbury rugby league.
Host venue of FIFA u-20 World Cup 2015 (group games, quarters and a semi).
Will continue to be used by football for internationals, major club games etc. after rugby vacates it for their new 35,000 capacity stadium to be completed in a few years.
Then Christchurch, with just a slightly larger population than Wellington, will have the 18,000 (extendable to 26,000) AMI Stadium in Addington plus a new 35,000 capacity (probably covered stadium) right in the central city about ten minute's walk from Cathedral Square.
This parallels the situation pre-earthquake with the two major stadiums Lancaster Park (Philipstown - not far from the central city)) and QE II stadium (capacity 15,000) built in 1974 for the Commonwealth Games and used a lot for football over the years (internationals, Christchurch United national league home ground 1974 - 1992, FIFA u-17 World Cup 1999). Was the best national league home ground up to 1992 with its immaculate pitch, large capacity and good facilities. Even the QE II number two ground was useful for smaller games such as Mainland League.
Spectators were a long way from the pitch at QEII since it was designed for athletics with a running track around it. In that sense, the new AMI stadium is better with its rectangular stands right up against the pitch.

Apparently the 'temp' chch stadium was 20 mill - what is the difference in facilities that makes it temporary.. anyone know? Never been there
Who goes to a stadium to eat ,,,?
Be far better perhaps , if they just removed restrictions on what you can bring in ..less intrusive and cut their losses on the stadiums share / rent to food outlets ...
The discussion on Radio Sport was more about how ALL sporting events are having trouble getting consistent crowds , I think its a combo of all these things ...security , crap little rules ,parking availabity / prices , shithouse LOUD music at any time theres a gap in anything , lousy overpriced food , huge queues for any thing , transport , timing , and inflated ticket prices ...
Should be an easy fix ,,,,
Read my previous comments, public transport, 10-30 minutes from the current venue. Parking without ticket wardens or meters .Would like to see a poll on this site to see what everyone thinks about it.
As plenty of others are saying the current stadium is sh*t but its location is the best you could get in the region. Build by there or rebuild it, but don't shift it to somewhere that'll make it more time-consuming and harder to get to for 2/3rds of the region's population.
I have read this and I think that anyone that actually believes that Morgan and Morrison are going to build a stadium should go stand in a corner by themselves.
Yeah they have plans for it but I strongly believe that's this is a stunt to get Westpac management to the table and negotiate harder.
1: Why fork out $30m. Even a bad deal at the stadium would not cost that much out of their pockets.
2: Where to have it?
3: Who else would use it?
4: To do this, how long is return on investment?
I just do not see it happening.

Exactly. Isn't this exactly Gareth's style? How he made his $$$$.
Yeah. He is a lot smarter than that.
David Dome was on Radio Sport this morning and was speaking more like a business manager than what Gareth probably was. He said that if there was another stadium, whether they used it or not would totally depend on how much it cost to use it. He mentioned that a smaller stadium should have lesser costs for security, power etc but it was a matter of whether or not those savings would be passed on to tennants. He didn't exactly say that last bit but I paraphrased what he did say.
I think a purpose built stadium in Petone would be ideal. Wouldn't add much from my travels from Karori, and if there were dedicated trains all the better.
A bit off topic but if your going to Domodedova airport in Moscow you can check in to your flight at the train station as your boarding the train so the commute is part of your check in time. Would be ideal if the train actually goes into the stadium itself, so you check in when boarding, or can buy the tickets on the train and then depart right into the stadium, so no more gates, security, etc. There are ways to make it seamless and hassle free.
I keep thinking about Easter Road stadium in Edinburgh. Its a 20,000 seater just outside of the CBD without much in the way of public transport but they get good crowds turning up. It serves a city marginally bigger than the Wellington region but one that hosts two professional football teams (well shortly only one).

Ok really crazy idea.
Do you sink the ground by say 2/3 metres allowing you to add more seats in to make it rectangular and say 'stuff cricket, go to the basin'
I think the stadium is very important to Wgtn, without the stadium it's safe to say we would have no football team, no all whites matches and numerous other events.
Wgtn is too small for 2 stadiums, just look at Auckland - 3 stadiums and each stadium has its own individual issues. Don't even know where to start to explain this cock up.
Anyway - Wgtn need to sort the Basin flyover issues, and then invest money into the Basin to increase capacity to 15k and install floodlights. Once that is done, we can look turning the stadium into a rectangle. A roof should seriously be considered as it will not only drive more punters but it will also improve quality of sport on display and not to mention other events like concerts. A must with Wgtn fickle weather.
But the key thing here is that the Stadium comes to the party and relaxes some of its over the top rules etc.
They won't build a new stadium at Petone Rec (or anywhere - as much as I'd be happy as it'd be literally one block away) any time soon... it's a massive investment which I can't see how it would be economically viable.
Unless Hutt Council, or the Petone Sportsville crowd won Lotto. Every week for a year. It won't fly.
The log park would be the perfect location but again, I just can't see anyone investing $20m+ in another new stadium - much less any local gummint bodies. Unless we relocated our feeder club (and their pokies dollars) south several-hundred km's of course...
what santy said
I'd love a stadium in petone, really like that place and Jackson St would rock on gameday, but just too many cons and not enough pros there.
Upgrade Basin to serve all cricket needs, then renovate stadium to bring it up to speed with modern stadia i.e. flashier bars/food establishments, bring supporters in closer to the pitch and put in multi-coloured seats like the gabba/bluetongue etc.
JV's idea about sinking the turf aint the worst idea... although not sure of the logistics around that i.e. turf drainage system etc etc
Build a new stadium on Mana Island
Just got to say I am loving the fact that this kind of chat is even making it to the Media. along with EPL teams and all the hugely positive stuff about Merrick and the team. Shows what a few good results can do off the pitch.
Reminiscent of our run to the finals a few years back. Woman's Day will be doing a human interest story on the Hernandes and Cunningham familys soon.
But persoanlly I think, seeing as we only have a licence for 2 more years or so, a new Stadium is beyond us. Maybe in 10 years time or so, if the Nix are still going with a long licence and junior team, womans team etc...

By "cons" I assume you mean "contras" and "pros" is "pros", not convicts and ...
Most importantly, what will the stands be named? Will there be Yellow Fever Stand? Maybe a Seriposis Walk. Could even be a Durante Block.

I'm with AJ on this. It's a hell of a lot easier to get from anywhere in the Wellington region, other than the Hutt or Wainui, to the Ring of Fire than it is to get to the Hutt Valley. Especially if you want to have a few drinks and use public transport. Or if you don't have a car. You might get a few new people from the Hutt coming but I doubt it'd be as many as you'd lose from the rest of the region. Even people in Karori or Newtown would have to switch buses or catch a bus and a train to get there, let alone people in Kapiti, Porirua, or the Northern suburbs.
