"Rovers were dealt a blow before kick-off with news that...Ryan Nelsen had failed to recover from [a] back injury ahead of the match at the Emirates"

At least he wasn't part of a defence that let through six goals, which was what I initially thought when I heard the score line of the Aresnal-Rovers game. But if he's injured and can't play this weekend or in a month, that's not a plus at all.

That is a worry. Without Nelsen our defence is pretty ordinary.

without nelsen, Ricki might have to consider playing 4 at the back!!! lol. But really big blow. not good

Seriously he'll play.  I mean this is his last shot at a World Cup.  Swelling and bruising apart, Ryan is pretty fit.

I like your optimism Ed but I dont share it. Think we need start accepting the fact we'll be without him for this one.

that would be terrible,

let's hope nzfa do a better job communicating about getting Ryan in the squad than they did with regard to Mossy's ban

Or we'll have to start calling them the nzsfa... (although I think technically it's just NZF anyway)

TVNZ says much the same, that he is in doubt. Which is pants

Get well soon!!

New Zealand Football:  All Whites confident of Nelsen fitness

October 5, 2009

AUCKLAND All Whites assistant coach Brian Turner is confident New Zealand skipper Ryan Nelsen will be fit to lead the side out against Bahrain in the first leg of a FIFA World Cup playoff in Manama on Sunday morning (NZT).

Nelsen missed Blackburns 6-2 English Premier League defeat to Arsenal this morning with a back injury sustained against Aston Villa last week, but Turner said the teams influential captain was determined to win his fitness race and start what is the most important match New Zealand has played since qualifying for the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

Our physio Roland Jeffery spoke to Ryan overnight and while he couldnt take part against Arsenal, hes having treatment and were confident hell be right to play against Bahrain, Turner said.

The All Whites will base themselves in Dubai until the eve of the match, with players and staff arriving in the emirate by Tuesday morning local time.

Nelsen is expected to miss the first few training sessions and his progress will be closely monitored by New Zealand medical staff.

While coach Ricki Herbert and the All Whites Wellington Phoenix have already touched down in Dubai, Turner and the remaining New Zealand-based players departed Auckland this afternoon.

I'll sleep slightly more soundly tonight. Must say NZF got that story up there very quickly, I'm somewhat shocked.

I can't remember any sporting game, in any code, I've ever anticipated and cared as much about the result as this match... (was born in 82).

Nervous bg time. I was nervous watching man united in the champions league final in May. Ive supported them for 13 years but so much more heart and pride is involved when it is new zealand.

Come on kiwis do us proud! (and create a good atmosphere whereby we are still contesting come november 14!)

Fire us to the World Cup! We defo need Nelson fit. No nervousness on my part- just pure excitement! I just cannot wait! Roll on Sunday!

Yup. I'd take a 2-1 loss away. We need an away goal. We can do though, I reckon. Come on lads!

I would have Brown at CDM and Elliott at LM. He played at LM for Fulham and also offers more stuff going forward then Brown does. I am not sure about RB. Could be risky starting Scott when Sigmund could just go there.

sh*tting myself just thinking about this game. Dont know how would ever cope with a penalty shootout

Allegedly

Really looking forward to it. Its getting sooo close.
Think I'd play Sigmund at RB to be honest. Just more quality and level heads on the field the better, and to be honest, how often does Siggy get beaten 1v1.
like the idea of Elliot on the Left , so McGlinchey could actually slot in behind the strikers. But not for this game.

We can actually win this one guys. Dont hold back. Smeltz/Killen /   fallon all a goal each. 3-1. Bring it on!!

I'll be able to cop as long as its not like the one against Melbourne Pre season cup where Smeltz missed by a mile.

If we play like we did against Italy, we could definetly come away with a great result. They won't be as good as that Italy team we played.

Still sh*tting myself tho.

Agreed actually always thought of Elliott of a defensive player, but i guess Brown can' play out wide either. Brown DM and Elliott LW. McGlinchey should be playing behind the strikers with Bertos wide and I think 4-1-2-1-2 Diamond is the best formation to have. Fits all the players except maybe Brown but then again i would have had Brockie starting on LW, but Riki didn't even pick him. The Brown DM and Elliott RB? not really a game to think about this kinda stuff now though. Hope like Heck Nelson is back, hes the only player someone out of Bahrain, NZ areas are going to recognize so it might give us extra fan from europe ect. Not that will make a diference.

i expect Bahrain will be a tad more motivated than the italians,

but, despite that,  i do think we have shown that we can get results against sides of Bahrain's caliber

If we win away I will spend at least the next 48 hours giggling like a schoolgirl.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I think Bahrain definitely have class, but we have a far superior squad in my opinion, Maybe a little more variation of skill in our team, but if the group can gel well and the experienced layers take the field on Sunday, I really believe we can keep them out from scoring and nab a few.
