some more coverage from the Gulf Daily News (althuogh not worthy of front page)

Ive also noticed in previous stories that Herbert keeps being quoted as saying "We showed at the Confederations Cup that we are capable of scoring away from home". As much as I think we are capable, we did in fact score no goals at the Confed Cup!

Does anyone know the reasoning behind basing ourselves in Dubai and only flying into Bahrain 24h before?

To stay away from the hype and fans that will be present in Bahrain.

It can be a pretty fine line you have to draw when you do that, different sports I realise but all the All Blacks say that basing themselves in Melbourne in 03 was wrong because they weren't part of the hype of the 03 RWCin Sydney. I just hope the same doesn't happen to AWs, getting a taste of the atmosphere of Bahrain will be a big part of making sure they are up for it on Sunday morning.

Trying to avoid the bells and drums outside the hotel though I guess? And Bahrain are having a 2/3 day camp in Sydney on the way over here maybe to limit the likelihood we will spend all week doing hakas and singing Pokarekare Ana outside their hotel.

Dubai probably paid them to stay there. They can pay for everything else, and it seems to be working at City. City vs Chelsea will be an interesting one.

Pokarekare would put them to sleep.

Poi E - only works if we have white-gloved people from freezing works breakdancing.

Got that album somewhere - it's a cracker - Dalvanius magic coupled with a drum machine beat. It made up for all the 1980s synth music.

Maybe to round off we could have non-stop rakau to E Papa (Patea Maori style, not Herbs). That would get to them eventually.

TBF, the All Blacks will find anything, other than themselves, to blame their choking on.

Didn't Australia have problems in Uruguay the first time they went their for their play off

Just because they can pay for the AW to stay there, I doubt they would even contemplate it.

all night rakau - would probably be banned under the Genva convention, it would fair mess with your head

perhaps Maori TV could boost their (real) World Cup profile by organising a live rakua competition outside the hotel

then for max entertainment, they could interview the Bahrainians for long enough that their breakfast gets cleared away before the sit down to it

a decent wero at the airport might also have them slightly on edge

I wouldn't worry about the NZHerald poll - it's filed under some sport called "soccer". They even disgrace Rattue with the headline about "soccer's" holy grail (though he makes up for their error by joining us in 2009 by referring to NZ Football).

So how 'bout that Soccer world Cup. Aussie vs US in the final right?

I usually feel this nervous at a game when it's three minutes from time, we're ahead by one and haven't had posession for the last 15 minutes, while Paston's been called to arms about half a dozen times in the last five mins.

Gently optimistic though.

Jeez, this game is getting quite a lot of prematch coverage. Not sure whats happening in NZ but travelling through Asia I have seen lots of stuff on TV football shows and the print media. Lots of the Asian media are not confident of Bahrain getting through.

They are really impressed by the number of AWs playing in UK....There is a feeling that the pressure might get to Bahrain at home. There is also some concern that the physical nature of the NZ style might upset them. Sure hope they choke on the night.

Saying that, they have some very skillfull players who can turn a game in a flash. Every AWi must play the game of their lives.

It is only 484 kms away in flight (about one hour flight) and the facilities are one of the best in the world. It is one of a few English FA accredited training facility outside of UK (in fact the first one outside of UK to accredited). It would be a mistake not to take advantage of the facility. They only need the one hour FIFA regulation training at the venue to assess the ground. I wouldn't be sure that our team would get much training done in Bahrain had they turn up earlier. Too much hype and distraction, and reducing number of unknown variables occurring.

It makes the preparation into two clear cut parts: First part- the intense training week of tactical and strategy focus plus environmental player conditioning in Dubai. Second part- psychological aligned conditioning when they arrival in Bahrain with light hour training at the venue the day before with R&R bonding and a short motivation/game plan reminder talk before the game. A decent rest physically and psychologically, so they can be sharp and focus in the match.

By making the away match preparation as a twofold, the focus is psychologically simplified with a transitional environment in between. While in Dubai, they are conditioning physically themselves for the game and when they are in Bahrain, the change in environment will naturally cue the players frame of mind psychologically to be more aligned for the match. If they had gone straight to Bahrain, they would not be able to rest and focus before the match without the transition. Away matches preparations, especially one far away and with a different environment needs, are different to home matches preparations. The Bahrain team will have their away transitional training camp in Sydney before coming to Wellington in the second leg. The difference is mainly psychological than physical.

Anyway, the jai ali international centre of excellence is one of the very best you can get in a training facility so, the players should feel that they are physically prepared before actually arriving at Bahrain.

Check out where they are training. Ryan Nelson has been there before with Blackburn Rovers when they were in europe competitions, I think.

For those looking for TV coverage, I located the game on Eurosport 2, where it will be shown live.

ESPN and Starsports (In Asia) have delayed coverage, times vary depending on where you are. If memory serves, Sunday early afternoon is  the time in Korea

I was just thinking the fact the Wellington Phoenix have 6-7 players in the squad and have played with each other most of the season will be a huge benefit for the New Zealand squad.

I was thinking this too and how it will hopefully compensate for the otherwise missing element of the "home factor".

I also have a conspiracy theory about the 5 consecutive draws for the Nux. World Cup planning by Herbert...

They may not have it, as they're only one stream provider with about six channels and there are lots of games going on at the same time for them to choose from.

Check myp2p.eu the night before the game. They show all stream providers, including iraqgoals, for every game - and not just football.

Eurosport2, ESPN and Starsports always have their broadcasts available in streams included in the myp2p.eu game. If any one of those channels is showing this game live, myp2p.eu will have it.

The only disadvantage is that, if I recall correctly, those three are often stream using Sopcast or TVU or similar. That's no big deal, as they're freeware and myp2p.eu has links to them. It just means you need to organised and alllow time to install the programs. I like that Sopcast allows you to record the stream, but TVAnts offers more choice over screen size.

Anyway, check myp2p.eu the night before and you'll be fine.

All Whites receive Nelsen fitness boost:
DUBAI Influential All Whites captain Ryan Nelsen has been declared fit to start New Zealands FIFA World Cup qualifier against Bahrain in Manama on Saturday night.

Reading that article, we have:
Nelsen took full part in a training session on Wednesday evening (Thursday morning NZT) and showed few signs of the back injury...
...hes 100 percent fit...

If he's 100% fit, then wouldn't he be showing no signs of the back injury, not few signs. Hopefully, it's lazy English in the first sentence and not hyperbole in the second.

Interesting what the Waikato Times hinted at in their article on Scott, Nelsen didn't undergo a fitness test on Sunday voluntarily to ensure he was right for the game. Country over Club! We lova ya Nelly!

Loving the Media coverage. Top Marks to the Dom Post, The main article on the back, and another large one in the sport section as well. Just wished they had some Photos, with the reporter guy in Dubai.

The TV coverage has been good to, bit disappointing that no one has a camera crew over there, so all the stories are half hated as they just show old footage.

DP and Herald have been good this week. TOny Smith has been prolific.
I think TV disappointing so far. There was nothing last night on the sports news (and Im not sure if there was anything TUesday night either). If they had sent a crew over they would be pumping something out each night. Apparently, tv1 may have somebody heading over? You wait until the All Blacks play their dead rubber, 10th test for the year in Japan. Every broken finger nail and selection question will lead the sports news for at least week.
