Name these mythical 24 countries you speak of.

And if you say South Korea or Portugal don't count then you could argue that NZ in football, don't either.

New Zealand (ranked 1) would put 100 points on anyone from Canada (ranked 15) down.

I doubt you can say the same would happen in football. Nice try, but come back with a different angle.

Three for me, and two for them.

NZ as a rank outsider and either worst or second worst ranked team at the 2010 WC (I can't remember which) managed a draw against the defending champions. What's the closest a country like Romania, Russia, Georgia, etc has got to beating one of the big boys at the RWC?

Sorry I don't see what your argument is? So by your logic with 207 teams ranked in Football, Spain wouldn't comfortably put away Burkina Faso at rank 61? A similar comparison to NZ and Canada in Rugby world rankings.

Who outside of the top twenty of Football would at a tournament put away Spain, Germany or Brazil?

Football is bigger we are all agreed. But Rugby Union for a world sport is hardly a poor one and 4 and a half million people estimated to play club rugby is hardly shabby.

You could have said that about Italy a few years ago or Argentina - OK not there yet but certainly getting there.

Or Wales 15 years ago - rubbish. They can compete with most teams these days.

Since the 1987 RWC the following teams have made the semifinals of the tournament: NZ, Australia, Wales, France, Scotland, England, South Africa, Argentina (8 teams in 7 tournaments)

Since the 1986 football WC the following teams have made the semifinals of the tournament: Argentina, Belgium, France, (West) Germany, Italy, England, Bulgaria, Italy, Sweden, Brazil, Netherlands, Croatia, South Korea, Turkey, Portugal, Uruguay, Spain (17 teams in 7 tournaments, or 18 if you consider West Germany and Germany separately)

I think that says something about the relative depth of teams at the tournaments

I like this.
Also, 25 teams have qualified for the World Cup in its history (there are 20 spots available). Compared with 76 to the football World Cup.

So Rugby Union shouldn't bother having a world tournament then because there are only 5 teams in it?

Since 1987 the Rugby world cup has been won by 4 teams.

Since 1986 the Football world cup has been won by 6 teams.

Hardly a gulf between the codes.

Christ If I never had to watch Rugby again it would be no loss but I don't have an issue with other people watching it.

You never hear of cricket or that god awful Formula 1 being compared to football so whats the problem?

No one's got an issue with anyone watching eggball.

The issue is that either code struggle to get meaningful world-scale competitions.  13-man egg ball is a farce. 15-man egg ball is so lopsided.

The reason there isn't so much skewness at FIFA WC is that the likes of American Samoa and Myanmar get eliminated in the regional qualifiers early on.

15-man egg ball doesn't have the depth and breadth to do this does it?

There's basically a rivalry between football and rugby in NZ and that's where these squabbles come from. Cricket and F1 fans don't see football as a threat. Football fans don't get harassed by cricket and F1 fans for the sport they follow.

edit: not that I really care. It is fun to have a silly pointless rivalry sometimes - kinda like the Nix and ACFC

But its practically a matter of what 20 years, which is no time in sport, for at least another 4 or 5 teams to become competitive. Also football success is far from Global with it being divvied up between South America and Europe. I think it's still really sad that we've not to seen an African nation lifting the world cup yet.

And you could promote football in say the middle east, somewhere sensible like Qatar maybe.

in 1981 the All Blacks beat Romania 14-6 and the Romanians had 2 tries disallowed. They have competed in all 7 world cups, won their group at one.

However this now difressed from the original thread but then if someone hadn't questioned me, perhaps it would not have been sidetracked. Job well done by one person.

Thanks. Someone else suggested earlier about having a triangular tournament like the rugby every season. Us, Aussie and SA. I myself would like to see this. It would help with our gloabl rankings and give our players regular international level football. Other thsn the travel, what other obsticles would there be? Using the international windows would make it feasable surely?

Biggest obstacle is there isn't really much benefit to Australia, they are better off playing games against other Asian opponents or against teams ranked higher than them.

Arnt SA ranked up there with them though? Also it gives them game time too.

SA are 50-something iirc and from what I've read many people seem to consider that a bit flattering.

Sorry, was reading the european nations cup stuff. Nice of you to constantly go after me. Makes me wonder if you are stalking me or not. Still I am sure the big green bunny will tell you to carry on.

But just to help your general knowledge, did you know that Romania have won 218 of their 377 test played? They have beaten France, Wales and Scotland. Now come on Buffon, come back with another smart remark. I know you actually like me. I find you kind of amusing too. ;) I am sorry I am only human, I know you know everything but one day I may catch you out too.

I would say that football success is global. Sth Korea and Japan, Cameroon, Sth Africa all have come a long way in the last couple of decades. Maybe more so than Romania in egg ball union.
