A footballing lesson for us but we were also very poor in Defence and our passing was woefull at times. Lots of work to do I think.

Ouch. NZ did crystallize a bit in the 2nd, even as Spain hardly even imperceptibly laid off a bit...

Better luck against Iraq and Sud Afrique, gents. Should be a bit more competitive I'd think.

Cheers.

Yeah Elliots touch was noticeably off  too much weight or not accurate. Across the board really
AW's had stuffing knocked out of them.
We are back in the real world now, not unexpected that size of loss. Could easily have been horribly worse. Now AW's can lick their wounds and get sorted for SA and Iraq.

Fulltime 5-0
Let's learn.  You take your knocks and move on.

Thought big key was our midfielder's not dropping back. Ricki will give Brockie and hounding after he let Capdevilla continue to break down the left and even when he did com back he didn't even bother to mark him. Bertos need's to get back more too although Ramos really didn't need to move up.

Obviously disappointed but I daresay one could've predicted that and it could have been much, much worse.  Elliot's shot was nice, pity Casillas was equal to it.  While I feel sorry for Boyens I must say I was so disappointed with that lapse in concentration.  A whole half against Spain without conceding would have been nice.

What are the chances of us beating South Africa or Iraq?  I think we are more than capable of it, but we'll have to be at the top of our game.

On a side note, we have got to get out of Oceania!

Yeap.. Foster after the game, almost praying that NZ don't make it into the world cup, only so that he doesn't have to analyse more 'embarrassing displays of football like this'.

Still can't complain too much, at least we get it free to air over here.

I'd say 0-0 in the other game was the better result for us today.

My thoughts exactly News...should only have been 1-0 to Spain.

You know what? I'm surprisingly optimistic after that match. Some of the attacking moves and passing were far better than I've seen from NZ in the past and we actually created some decent chances against the number one team in the world.

Sure, I was embarrassed with our defending and some of the amateur attempts to control/clear the ball at times (Boyens, Vicelich and Mulligan particularly), but I think we may actually pick up some points in this tourney. A win over South Africa is probably too much to expect, but I reckon we can pull off at least a draw against Iraq!

FFS YOU WERE PLAYING SPAIN!!!!

I thought Bertos was really good, you had shots on goal, you had a times when you beat players, not all bad. Brown better later on. Elliot ok. Look at the players you were up against?

Spain are the best team in the world.

Passing let you down at times, Mulligan still does my head in, There is more to playing at the back than jumping up and down in front of a player like a five yeard old.

What was that about Brockie sitting in the dugout during halftime? Did he throw a hissy fit or something? Ricki needs to have a word.

Torres stars as Spain stroll

Fernando Torres scored the fastest hat-trick in FIFA Confederations Cup history as Spain stated their intentions with an emphatic 5-0 win over New Zealand in Rustenburg.

The All Whites' gameplan would doubtless have been to make the opening stages as awkward as possible for their illustrious rivals, but it took just six minutes for the OFC champions to begin searching for Plan B. Some superb midfield interplay teased an opportunity for Torres, who opened his body and curled a superb right-foot shot into the top corner from 20 yards.

It was a reminder, were any needed, of the Liverpool striker's awesome ability, and it took just eight minutes for him add an opportunistic second, slotting home a David Villa cutback from close range. A hat-trick seemed inevitable and, sure enough, Torres soon completed a record-breaking 13-minute treble with his head, bulleting home a drilled left-foot cross from Joan Capdevila.

Spain were toying with the Kiwis by this stage and, after Albert Riera had seen a fizzing low shot brilliantly tipped behind, their lead was duly increased to four with 21 minutes of the first half still remaining. Once again, the All Whites' rearguard was carved open by yet more fantastic pass-and-move football from the European champions, with Riera and Capdevila combining intuitively to tee up Cesc Fabregas for the simplest of tap-ins.

I didn't think Mulligan played too badly, all things considered.  His control let him down a few times and he missed a few passes, but a number of those passes he failed to control weren't his fault at all.

Disagree but there you go, I just think he struggles to know where to go and what to do when the other side is on the attack, he was better 2nd half. Mind you shocking defense overall.
