Back to where it all began for the Woodsman.
Prediction, 7-0 AWs.

The more interesting games this window, will be with the other OFC pool in PNG, plus Vanuatu verus Tahiti at Mt Smart.

Back in October the Vanuatu coach, talked about possibly resting a few players against the AWs. All the focus for them on the do or die Tahiti game 3 days later, to make the semi finals next March.

If they do rest the likes of Kaltak, the scoreline could really blow out in Hamilton.

I’m not sure it’s allowed in the A league, but I’m wondering if Ausi clubs will be watching games like this crowd wise, to determine if it’s worth their while taking their Auckland AFC home games to places like Hamilton?

It’s been done before by NRL teams

Doubt that would ever happen. More likely Aussie clubs would take a game to places like Tassie or Canberra, where the Tasmania or ACT Govts may underwrite the costs.

Western U have taken a few games to Tassie.

Top team for me. We don't need to roll this out to win this though...

I'd have Bindon and Surman, they are going to be the CB pairing for the long term so may as well start now!
Other than that using the full strength squad for these games is crucial to get the lads used to paying as a unit - despite the poor opposition.

Should be a good crowd by All White standards. My kids futsal team is defaulting because all 8 of them will be at the game - not together but with their respective familes etc.

His team alone will bring about 25 people (5 from me).

A Friday night game in the tron, I think will bring a decent crowd

Monday night game in Aucks could be a little dire unless the Samoan supporters turn out - but I wouldn’t be holding my breath

Futsal Waikato have cancelled all games which is a positive sign due to so many teams defaulting.

Just need some positive media coverage to help drive up numbers.

For the moment, Tommy Smith is the exception. For how much longer who knows. Issac Hughes could start every ALM game for the Nix this season. Smith on the other hand may start not much more than zero for Auckland.

If that 2017 team below could win 6-1, (admittedly the Solomons are often not that defensively minded), a full strength 2024 side can hit double figures against both Vanuatu & Samoa (highly likely). Especially as these days games are more 100 mins than 90 mins.

https://theniche-cache.com/football/2024/11/11/all-whites-in-the-november-wcqs-squad-yarns-amp-preview

The other selection tendency that people need to know is that Darren Bazeley doesn’t do mid-strength squads. He’s often hampered by injuries and sometimes there are club situations that require a little bit of goosing with the bigger picture in mind... but with the exception of the Oceania Nations Cup, which took place outside of a FIFA window shortly before the Olympics (and which wasn’t originally in the plans for NZF, until they decided they needed the rankings points), Big Man Baze continually picks the strongest group available to him. Even for windows like this where he doesn’t need all the main characters to get results. Rotation is not a priority for this team. Bazeley picks the best team whenever possible. He’d have easily gotten away with some lenience for these last two squads but nope the thought never entered his mind.

It’s always cool to see different guys get an opportunity in the national team but at the same time they do have to earn it. By avoiding the temptation to leave a few of the European-based hombres behind in November, Bazeley is effectively saying that every game matters, every tour matters, and that it is a privilege and an honour to represent Aotearoa. Standards stay high as long as there are quality players outside the group keeping everyone on their toes with good club performances. It also reflects on the fact that these top players want to be there. They want to play against Tahiti in Vanuatu. They want to face Malaysia and Vanuatu and Samoa on home soil. There’s a great vibe around the playing group and they don’t take this stuff for granted. Plus they realise that if they take a tour off then some other joker might just swoop in and take their position.

The risk of this approach is that this becomes a kind of boys club where the same guys are picked regardless of how (or if) they’re playing in the club scene... but the exclusion of Bill Tuiloma seems to show that isn’t the case. The depth pool is only getting deeper so it’d be curious to see what happens if one of the regulars goes on a form slump and how much benefit they’d be given before getting dropped. One gets the feeling that Bazeley would take a Blackcaps-esque ‘hard to get into the squad, hard to get out of the squad’ approach... which is not such a bad way to go about it, really. Here’s a quote explaining some methodology...

Darren Bazeley: “Bill [Tuiloma]'s a top player and he's got 40-odd caps for New Zealand but he's in a position at the moment where he's not playing consistently for his club over in America and we've had that conversation with him - it's very difficult to select you for the All Whites when you're not playing for your club. The All Whites environment has changed now there's competition for places and that's the challenge for the players. You have to be match fit you have to be ready to play because we've got other options now, other good options.

To have a player like Bill who is not consistently selected in the squad just shows where we are at now. The thing with this squad now and these players is they all want to play in every single game, I think most of them could see now that there's competition for places and they don't want to be missing out on a game and not be available because somebody else can take that shirt and you never know then how that person might play that's the way football works.”

.....The last time they (AWs) played at home against a Pacific team was a 6-1 win against the Solomon Islands in 2017 in which Chris Wood scored a hat-trick.

The starting line-up that day was:
Marinovic, Roux, Tzimopoulos, Boxall, Brotherton, Wynne, McGlinchey, Thomas, Patterson, Barbarouses, Wood. The three subs used were: Musa, Bevan, Colvey

Looking back, that’s half of a really good team and half poorly-aged Anthony Hudson shenanigans (the back five being highest on that list... the two teams then drew 2-2 in Honiara four days later with seven NZ starters in common). Times have changed.

Like many I was underwhelmed by Bailey's appointment at the time and I still am for the most part, but I've got to say I'm really pleased he picks the strongest squad every time. He's sort of put value back in the shirt and I rate that. Definitely could be a cricket score against Samoa

I think Baz has done ok personally. I think he has blooded in some youngsters which has been good to see, and I do feel we are trying to play positive football under him.

I think the biggest areas of weakness for the All Whites is not so much a coaches problem but lack of real depth in the #9 and #10 roles when Singh and Wood are out.

We certainly have more depth, but not across the pitch. In LB for example we have Cacace, Sutton, McGarry, DeVries, Wilkins who I think are all decent options, but at AM we have Singh then who (outside of playing players out of position as a stop gap)

This is one advantage of appointing an AWs coach, who has been around the team awhile previously under Hay. He's been in NZ itself for many years. He knows the talent very well. Had hands on experience with the younger guys who have come through the U20s. Seen other fringe older players overseas like ADJ, Tuiloma, Kyle Adams, Tzanev, Dyer etc, over the years in various NZ teams.

I mean it's only probably about 50 guys really currently in real contention for the AWs, so not a huge number of players to keep close tabs on - but Bazeley should know all of them well by now. Who is two footed, who is not, who is fast over 20 metres, who's not etc etc.

As Niche Cache posted somewhere recently. With NZF's limited budget, and this by NZ standards really good group of players, you almost just want a coach who 'doesn't get in the way of that'. The senior playing group as much as the coach are involved in setting the playing style, tactics, squad selection etc. For example sounds like the decision to now consistently select a back 4, regardless of the opposition, is a discussed consensus choice.

It's basically the polar opposite of when Hudson came in. Knew very little about the players, the overall talent/depth was nowhere as strong, and he handed out caps willy nilly, rubbing a rabbits foot praying to uncover a nugget or two from somewhere. Anywhere

Wood arrived back in New Zealand on Tuesday lunchtime and completed his first full training session on Wednesday. Others came into camp even later, with two players arriving at 1am on Wednesday morning and another at 5am. It’s not ideal but nothing new, with the squad dispersed across the world.

Bazeley said some players could be held back but “everyone wants to play”, while they are also monitoring the fitness of Wellington Phoenix striker Kosta Barbarouses, who left the field with a knock during Saturday’s win over the Central Coast Mariners. “He has not been ruled out.”

The All Whites will be heavy favourites against Vanuatu, whose squad is almost entirely domestic-based, with captain Brian Kaltak (Central Coast Mariners) the only fulltime professional while there are four others drawn from Australian regional leagues. But Bazeley said there is no chance of overconfidence or complacency.

“For every game, there are different challenges but we try to prepare for every game the same way,” said Bazeley. “The players don’t need too much reminding of the importance of the game. We are the favourites and we know that. That does bring different challenges but not [anything] that we are scared of.”

No need to really be in camp for two weeks before these kind of games - even though they have consequences. The island nations arent really a threat, even the junior Nix would test them (excluding New Caledonia).

have found that adding a "?" at the end of the web address works.
Also, the struggle is real to get 21-24 players from all across the world. Although I dont really agree with Libby's summation how much of a sacrifice it is to come and play for your country - I understand that it's tough on the body, but sacrifice?

There is the opportunity of cost of remaining at your club, training well through the break and pushing for more minutes instead of disappearing to the other side of the globe  where you won't demonstrate anything other than your ability to beat up on amateurs - sacrifice isn't an unfair description.

Interesting that it sounds like not all the players fly business class. Wonder how that is decided? And surely if the AWs qualify for the WC next March, locking in the big $14M payday that means everyone in future can be up the pointy end of the plane

It was interesting. Be good to know the inside goss on what qualifies- 2 leg flight, certain number of caps?, time of last club game played?

Who would kick up the biggest stink?

A combination of the above?

Height restriction? Surely Eli Just is small enough to curl himself up into an economy seat comfortably!

Actually remember OJ posting that the Football Ferns (senior) travelled Business to & from the Paris Olympics, and the Olywhites (age group) Economy.

I'd agrue European based Sth American players have it tougher. Flight times home from Europe in range 12-14 hours. Then the Bolivians play at 3,650 metres in La Paz, the Ecuadoreans 2,850 metres in Quito, and the Colombians in steamy hot Barranquilla (they avoid temperate Bogota to get an advantage). And you turn up in those places you ain't playing Samoa. Plus it's a long CONMEBOL qualifying campaign of 18 games (9 windows). That's proper tough

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360482676/what-it-takes-have-all-whites-playing-new-zealand

The squad of 24 selected by coach Darren Bazeley for this month’s window included six players at A-League Men newcomers Auckland FC, who came into camp in that very city on the back of a bye week, so barely had to travel at all.

The other 18 came from 11 different countries, as near as Australia – where the Wellington Phoenix played on Sunday – and as far away as Portugal, as the crow flies. They passed through 16 different airports and required a total of 32 flights, the longest of which were the 16-hour, 10-minute trips for those coming from Europe via Dubai. Around a third of them would have had the bonus of business class tickets.

One of the results of the CBA from about 5 years ago was that the mens and womens teams had parity about travel conditions.  I don't know the fine details of the agreement but when reading "Football Ferns (senior) travelled Business to & from the Paris Olympics, and the Olywhites (age group) Economy." remember thinking thats probably a quirk of that agreement and a distinction between senior and age group teams!

I am surprised that not all 11 Europe and 2 USA are not in business if the "Around a third of them would have had the bonus of business class tickets" is correct as that would imply 8 in business and 5 in Premium Economy or Economy.  Maybe that was the quid pro pro for giving business to the women as well, that there is some limit.

Was it Merrick who as Nix coach, had a bit of rant at NZF when Weemac and others returned from a window in Europe, cattle class?

I think nations that qualify for the next WWC in 2027 will get the same huge FIFA payout, that nations get when their teams qualify for a mens WC.

If true NZF's International Teams Fund should get a double big boost over the next 2-3 years. No economy class for any senior players (mens or womens) after that you'd hope.

Actually was thinking the other day, that just quietly Pragnell won't want the next 4 AWs OFC games (this window & next March) to blow out to double figure scorelines. The Samoa mismatch yes, but the other 3 games he will want to be tighter.

Though sure alot of AWs fans, want to see us in AFC, with regular exciting big games at home (like the Socceroos hosting Saudi today in Melbourne) - NZF will be eagerly looking forward to next March and the $14M payday that comes with WC qualification. But they won't want all blowout scorelines to March, and FIFA reconsidering OFC getting an automatic WC spot in the future. An almost guaranteed $14M payday (or $28M if the Ferns get same) every 4 years - cash strapped NZF won't want that compromised. You can't blame them for that. $14M or $28M, gives you a big big platform to grow the game off. Without it, it's back to the beggars table.

It might be that business seats were simply not available on all sectors the players have flown and I'd imagine Wood and maybe Libby too travel so much and are paid so handsomely they get first class by default.

The airline I work for regularly bumps up prem footballers to first class to ensure that football revenue stream continues to flow to them and not competitors.

Ah, FMG Stadium, the Phoenix will have some nice memories playing here, while the Ferns will unfortunately have some pretty painful ones.

Phoenix: Site of Lia's absolute screamer and a final scoreline of 3-0 against the Mariners in season 16/17.

Ferns: Smashed 5-0 by Portugal early last year in one of the pre-WC friendlies after Klimkova foolishly stated in a press conference the day before the match "We are going to beat Portugal."

Bonus: 2015 FIFA U20 WC, 2-1 round of 16 loss against Portugal, first time we had ever made it to the knockout stages of an U20 WC. Heartbreak for us as Portugal scored late on after we equalised earlier in the second half.

Went to their training last night... took the oldest boy down who loved it and got everyone's (including the coach) bar Gillions signature on his ball.

It's been a while since I have been up that close to the lads, but man we are a big team. Just looks tiny on TV, but isn't actually that small. Looks very wirey but strong.

Things I noticed
  • Barbs training by himself and icing of the knee. Looked comfortable, so probably more of a precaution.
  • Payne sat out the last bit as well - so maybe carrying a little knock?
  • Crocombe is starting
Bindon looks a player, Rufer and Bell both the most vocal in the game situations, asking for the ball, telling players what to do etc, which I thought was a great dynamic - who has the inside to partner Stamenic??

Hopefully some decent weather for tonight in Hamilton. It's been hammering down here all night in New Plymouth, and usually we get the brunt of it before the rest of the central and upper north island.

Shouldn't make a difference to the result in any case. But it might keep a few punters away if it's bloody miserable.

I would have Just and McCowatt and then Stamenic Bell. Singh instead of Rufer.

Probably will see Pijnaker start with one of Bindon and Surman. Crocombe is still the No1.

Should be looking to play our strongest XI regardless of opposition.

They’re all here in one piece so let’s use it while they’re together for the rare time they’re together.
