Upon initially reading that line, I thought you were referring to the chappy with the very same name that I have seen around here.

Was an interesting game for sure, First half there were 20+ people moaning at people standing in White Noise aka NZ Football have screwed this up again besides that game was ok.

Bertos looked really sharp when going forward, but the crowd got frustrated when he passed back to Elliott. Still, we had way more scoring chances that we last played Paraguay.

Was annoyed at 5 Massey students in front of us who thought they were at a rugby match and that consuming alcohol was the point of it all. They will each make a woman deeply unhappy one day.

But props to Fallon and his disrobing at the end.

Hey you bastards I'm still here.

Some thoughts on the match:

- We were shit in the first half, but looked great in the second. Wonder what the difference was.

- If we had a world class finisher we could trouble most international teams.

- Elliotttt still does exceptionally well for an unemployed 36 year old journeyman.

- We need to develop another Nelsen-esque leader at the back.

- It was great to see Mossy get a run.

- Was the 'I got Wood to 99 on FIFA' sign made by Whooooooo?

Well put.

I've got a feeling the Nelsen-esque leader will be Reid eventually. Still some way off right now but still just 21.

Rory Fallon is a very generous man.

good to see wee mac get some time, hope Leo does some of that 2nd half stuff on Sunday

missing Nelsen and perhaps Smeltz would have helped - a fit Fallon would have caused the probs

Wood out on his feet at the end

oh well better that loss than v Bahrain or one of the WC matches

If we can just maintain the pressure for the full 90 -  its all over.
Cant complain about the amount of chances we created and great to see Clapham get a run.
Cmon Ricki sign him for the Nix

Hugely impressed with Wood and Elliott - again.

Fallon also really impressed in the short time he had.

With one eye on this Sunday it was nice to see some glimpses of the old Leo.

I wonder how much some of the Paraguayans would cost - #3, #10 and one of the guys with a pony tail were all class. In fact they all would look pretty good in a Nix shirt.

Thought we played better overall than against Honduras. And Paraguay were a cut above Hon to be hon.

An early goal in the second half (and we had chances) would have made it very interesting. Nevertheless, we played (almost) like a team that deserves to be playing top 20 teams on a (semi) regular basis.

Appalled that there was so little from the media about Paraguay being a top 20 team and this being a real test (ha!) for the All Whites.

This morning's Dom does not even mention the game in its outside pages (front & back). Unbelievable. Dom subscription cancellation is next action!

That aside, it was pretty entertaining fare.

I know, I know, its serious!

Fairly dull game for the most part I thought, but was not unexpected with it being a friendly.

Some woeful shooting from both sides it has to be said and Chris Killen was probably the worst offender. Must have had about 10 efforts on goal and not one troubled the keeper. Got to do better at this level to have any chance.

Brown was unlucky not to score. Wood looked a handful again. Still got some way to go but time is on his side.

You guys struggled a bit without Nelsen and it will be interesting to see what happens when Nelsen, Elliottt and Vichelich retire.

Still, you can content yourselves with the fact that the game was still 100 x more exciting than the Czech Republic v Scotland game at the weekend...and that was a UEFA qualifier!

Overall I thought the game was good. ( Mainly second half ) We should of at least got 1 goal. I believe that Chris Wood defo has potential to be a great finisher / player for New Zealand football. I also believe that we need to develop a new "Nelsen" like player for the team as he wont be around forever. Winston could defo do the job just needs to work on a few things. That being said I didn't like the way Dewhurst and De Jong kept on dragging on about Reid and all the things he needs to do to get anywhere in football. The way I look at it Reid contains more talent in a single toe nail clipping then either of those two artards do in there whole body. But meh, that could just be me. I also thought Killen played well and seemed to be the one that wanted to do something about the fact we were 2 goals down. However I don't no if I like his shoot on sight policy.

We missed Ryan big time and I'm not sure what game everyone else was watching but Bertos did not have a good game, his decision making was poor throughout, tried to run through 3 players time and again when he should have crossed or played the easy ball. At A League level it might have worked but at this level it wont. He will learn though I guess.

Brockie has come a long way in the last 2 seasons and played well, Elliottt had another good game. All in all good experience for us but we need more of these games to improve.

Jamie Cross was a very poor choice as ref he was not up to controlling a game at this level and it showed.

As much as he is a fat man at a buffet, I'd have to go against you. The red and pen were straight forward and you could have cried incompetence had he not given them. There was not much else to do other than that. Missed one foul on Bertos in the 40th but it wasn't the worst foul you'll ever see and was only the one. Suggest you watch the replay, you might change your mind.

Agree we missed Ryan. That aura didn't feel like it was there.

I said 'fairly dull', not completely dull. It was what it was, a friendly with some decent moments, and some other moments that were like a practice match. But as I say, that's what friendlies are like.

I thought Cross had a decent match. Much better than the Boca Jnr one.

Game was patchy but the 2nd half was very encouraging.

Crowd atmosphere was very subdued - saving ourselves for the Nix game!!

I thought the All Whites were OK. No one seemed to have a bad match. Brockie and Woods were better than Id thought theyd be.

But overall the team was miles second best to a Paraguay team that barely got out of second gear. But for woeful finishing from them, they could, and probably should have, won 6-0.

They were very comfortable on the ball throughout. No 20 impressed in the midfield. Way too good basically.

Thought not a  bad game from our boys, and thought Clapham looked good and busy when he came on. Lost the ball in a dangerous area one time, and worked bloody hard to get it back. Some nice touches too.

While we did at times lose the ball seemingly easily, or have some terribly misdirected passes, there were times there was some nice, slick short-passing that was getting us into good positions, which I took as a real positive. Plenty to build on.

Reids tackle was awful, but I thought more clumsy than vicious. did deserve the red, tho I hoped for a yellow.  I was impressed that he stayed near the player and showed genuine concern about any injury he may have suffered- classy, even if the tackle wasn't.

I have to say, looking back at these two games, I am happy with some of the attacking intent, with the strikers up front. But there was a lot of wasted opportunities from midfield playing the ball the wrong way.

Players lack vision to create chances, get the ball into space. When we have it up front, the skills of Killen, Wood, Smeltz and Fallon will get us through games.

Bertos - had very average game. Had acres of space, and day dreams with the ball. Let's 2 or 3 defenders get on him, stuck against the sideline, then tries to run all of them.
Needs to learn to use the ball first time, or get rid of it quickly. Too predictable to defend against for anyone who has watched him play anywhere before.

Elliottttt - not sure what people see in the guy. Best comment I've seen about him recently was that he looked like Benjamin Button born in a #7 shirt. Kudos to whoever said it.
Easy to see why he has no contract IMO.

Clapham - should have come on earlier, either for Bertos or Elliottt. Needs more game time, showed some good signs keen to get involved in the game.

Reid and Siggy - sh*t happens, but can't afford these things to happen in internationals. Just like Tim Brown has the occasional brain explosion for the 'nix, these were both brain explosions.

I have to say, I was surprised they had Siggy at RB and Reid at CB. Thought they would have done better the other way around.

Also, loved Lil Mac and Brockie on the field, they had some magic touches, and good for the future of the team.
Easily the two best on the night IMOArd Righ2010-10-12 23:55:22

Just a couple of quick thoughts -

Fallon was only on for a few minutes but I thought he started creating problems for Paraguay immediately. The old World Cup tactic of sending it in high to Fallon to nod it on to whoever was there almost worked a couple of times in the few minutes he was there.

I was pretty sure that 2nd Paraguay goal was off-side - a bit unlucky really.

They had a quick passing style and a lot of ball control. Plus when they wanted to be they were very quick as well and defended agressively. But in the end they didn't have any more chances on goal than us really. Its just that they got one of their ones in (plus a penalty). We got prety close - a couple of those snap kicks were soooo close... So even though they had such better passing and control, it ended up being pretty close. I'd take it as a positive really.

My thoughts:

- I thought that was the best quality game I have ever seen live. Some of the passing from Paraguay was superb and even some of our play was really nice.

- McGlinchey and Brockie were both quality, WeeMac buzzed around everywhere, should have shot first time on a couple of occassions but thats the way it goes. Brockie carried on from Saturday and looked the goods.

- Wood is a monster, that kid is going to be such quality in a year or two

- Is it just me or does it seem Ryan Nelsen made Winston Reid look better than he acutally he is in South Africa? Between him and Siggy we had a lot of agriculture in that backline last night.

- Paraguay are world class and you could see that so I thought it was encouraging that for large patches we stayed with them. As someone said earlier we looked like we could play this standard of team on a semi-regular basis which is really encouraging.

- Paston was very solid and made one excellent save.
- Reid was rash and shouldnt have played the central sweeping role. he got dragged out of position for the second goal, which created space for the ball to be slipped through the middle, plus the red card obvously.
- Vicelich was shown up for speed and should have been swapped with Reid
- Sigmund was fine in patches but got caught out for the first goal
- Bertos spent the first half slowing the ball down and then running for the corner flag, but proved a right handful when he decided to be more direct and decisive. some good runs and crosses in second half
- Brockie was a bit quiet but showed was a great technician he is when got involved. his quick feet and cross to Brown were sublime.
- Elliotttt in the first half was our best player by distance. he moved the ball around very fluidly and hit some quality passes. He also cleaned up defensive mistakes a number of times.
- Brown was unseen. Can we really afford to have one of our central midfielders not involved at all when we have possession?
- Mcginchey had a poor first half giving the ball away but improved significantly in the second half and started to link well with the strikers.
- Killen was involved plenty and had a couple of decent moments (in particular the volley that went just wide) but also blundered a couple of opportunities to shoot or cross in good positions.
- Wood had a great start but was a bit inconsistent as game wore on. Some good touches but also but cheap turnovers.
- Boyens looked a little shaky
- Moss did nothing wrong in his short spell
- Clapham had one bad touch but otherwise looked pretty tidy
- Christie did nothing. why on earth did he come on in behind the strikers? didnt know what he was doing there
- Fallon showed how much of a headache he can be for defenders on his day, winning some very good headers that could with a bit of luck fallen into space for our strikers.

I thought we had a good game. I wasn't expecting to beat a team with the class of Paraguay. We were pretty attacking - with Brockie and Bertos playing pretty high - thus exposing us on numerous occassions on the right wing in the first half. I would have hoped player the calibre of Wood and Killen would have put away one of those half chances. Reid was a bit average - so we definitely missed Reid. Elliottt was solid. Crowd was 10X better than Akld

Was at the game:

We did miss both our Captain and Smeltz but did surpisingly well without them.

Wood was my MOM, I thought he really troubled them whenever he had the ball. He needs to work on his finishing though, he had heaps of chances [many that he created himself] and a good season in the Championship will help him convert those chances he doesn't now.

Apart from 1 or 2 moments Killen was pretty ordinary and on that performance is easy to see why Boro let him go and he ended up in China.

Wee Mac had a slow start but came into his own when playing wide right in the 2nd half. Thought that he should of been kept on and Killen replaces as he was creating chances from out wide.

Bertos had moments of brilliance but I think was caught out by the pace of the game a bit. He seems to take too long to make decisons and was closed down quickly. The result was a duffed pass or a hospital one to another AW. A couple of his forays in the 2nd half were class, he needs to be more consistently good [at Nix level also].

Brockie was quieter than on Saturday but had a solid game with some good service to the strikers.

Brown - again some nice touches but I didn't notice him too much, maybe he just works away without standing out too muh at this level.

Ivan - very comfortable in the main. He is a solid defender and i like him.

Reid, interesting to see him play in what he used to call his favoured position [and the one he played in Denmark]. He is still a bit impetuous [as shown with the red card] but is going to be our Nelsen in future years for sure.

Siggy, has been playing right back in a few games so far and i think he makes a good fist of it. The crowd [and everyone on the field] was quiet when he gave away the penalty but he was well beaten. He isn't outclassed at this level in the RB position and I can see him staying there in the A League.

Paston - did nothing wrong.

Trying to think who I'm missing from the strting line up..... yes Elliott - can't believe that he can play at such a high level without having a club. Got into trouble a few times but was pretty strong.

Some of the others - boyens - geez he was woeful. The first 5 out of 6 touches were gifts straight to the opposition - schoolboy errors i thought and I expect better int he context of the players and team we now have.

Christie, don't know what he brings extra to the team - didn't do much except run around IMHO, has no spark or magic about him.

The ref, I thought he did alright, thought he might have trouble keeping up [he is a little bit chubby] but apart from one piece of inconsistency [with a free kick] thought he did alright. Thought RH was a bit cruel with his comments in the Dom this morning critising him for sending Reid off in the 90th minute. Whatever the time was, that challenge deserved a red.

I also thought RH left it too long to bring rory on - 10 minutes!!!! he should have replaced Killen miles before that. Killen was doing noting [except that beautiful strike that just missed].

Crowd size wasn't announced to the crowd - why I wonder? No replay on the big screen for Reid's red and I didn't see one for Siggy's penalty either - poor form.

Overall I thought Paraguay were better than us with their quick transistion from defence to attack and some of the deft little flicks etc [which are probably more to do with their tradition than a direct reflection on their better footballing ability] and they scored from their only real direct attack on goal. they had a lot of wild long range shots but they weren't real chances were they?

We are getting ourselves into scoring positions and that is pleasing. We need more games at this level to help us to convert [I'm seeing why many want us to play in Asian now for this reason]. Infuriating several times when we looked to ahve them under the kosh and we didn't know what to do or didn't do it fast enough and we endded up passing the ball back into our own half. Para only did that when they were wasting time, otherwise they were 'get the ball back - bang straight onto attack'.

Funny how people can see a game differently. I watched Leo with interest because he's been copping a bit of flak lately and some of it has been justified but on numerous occasions last night and it also happens when he plays for the Nix, he will receive the ball wide in space and take off with it and suddenly he is isolated. All his team mates seem to run away from him thinking he is going to magically beat three players and get in a cross. He often doesn't have any other option or anyone closeby to make the simple pass.

I thought the crowd was good last night. Lots of White. Big ups to Rory Fallon giving away all his gear and then coming back out with his boot bag and chucking some more boots into the crowd.

Aaron Clapham got a big kiss from his mum near to where I was and then I saw her walking out of the stadium wearing the Paraguay shirt that Aaron had swapped for his.

Killen is a conundrum, sometimes he does stuff and I think yeah you are quite good and I can see how you have played at a decent level then he does things (which are often easier than the previously mentioned things) which make you think he would struggle at A-League level.

FIFA regulations. They deliberately don't show replays at the ground that may be controversial and incite the crowd.

What I really wanted to see was a replay of the second goal. Does anyone know if it was offside or not?

I enjoyed the game despite the loss. I was very pleased we kept pushing forward rather than going into damage limitation mode. In fact I enjoyed that a lot more than the 0-0 game at the world cup just due to the more positive intent. We created quite a few difficult chances and a couple of good ones that should have really been goals.

Pretty good sumation napierphoenix. Quality of football was good I do believe.

We certainly need more of this if we are to keep going to World Cups.

Unfortunatly I would guess that a lot of the spectators last night would not appreciate some of the quality on display.

Yes rjmillar I have seen a couple of replays of the second goal and also I was in line with play from my seat and my reaction was offside too. I did look towards the linesman and he was a bit behind play. But I think if it was offside or a very very line ball situation at least.
