All Whites Coach Discussion - Hay Fever

I think it needs its own thread. Will they go local? Danny Hay has put his hand up. Is Des Buckingham interested and the right man for the job? Ramon’s questionable coaching badge qualifications, are they a bar to him being considered? A couple of goodies - Declan Edge and Brett Angell in tandem?

Jose Mourinho's keen on an international job. Maybe once Huddo beats him to the Newcastle job, he'll come to the All Whites.

Hudson 7-1 for the Newcastle job AH comes from the area, Talksport in the UK talking him up at the moment.

Not sure how I feel to be honest - glad they've given a local coach a chance, but slightly underwhelmed.

Be that as it may - NZF need to buckle down and secure as many games and camps as possible for Hay to start his work programme.

Mix and match with U23 and other junior teams as you like for games in the Islands and training camps etc, but we need games against top 100 opposition as regularly as possible - otherwise we might as well just go home now and wait until Oceania is given a qualifying spot for the WC.

More importantly, does Declan recognise him? I mean after all, that is the key question that everyone is waiting for the answer to.....

Hopefully retained as an assistant.

Wonder if Edge is going to be involved, somehow in the coaching setup.

And if he is, does that mean his/Ole's relationship with NZF will improve.

He tweeted that he was looking forward to rejoining suburbs for the summer season so where that stands I have no idea, particularly with the Ole TeeDubs link. Does Declan take over as head coach at Suburbs?

Have heard rumours on who Hay's AWs assistants are but have not seen it officially but Edge wasn't one of those named.

Surprised at the social media love in to be honest.

Only thing he has ever achieved as a coach was on the back of Declan Edge delivering him a national league title. Previous season he had the personel to win on paper with half a squad of All Whites but was never really close, and before that he politically got himself into the U17 sides taking over sides already set-up by the incumbents and never made a real mark.

The only thing he could claim credit for is buying some success in Auckland college football which is pretty much a joke before you even start on him walking out on the Knights as a player because it was too much like hard work.

It's a lazy and uninspired decision by an increasingly lazy and unspiring national body.

Technically, he tweeted about looking forward to coming back to work with Danny, didn't mention ES. I think this was decided some time ago.

Not to mention that even though he won the grand final with Eastern Suburbs, he also lost 4 out of 5 games against his closest rivals despite having the most talented (young) team in the comp.

this feels like another backwards step for football in NZ. Poor appointment after poor appointment! NZ's footballing skills just been thrown away.

In the big picture wouldn't it be best for football in NZ, if NZF, the Nix and Ole were all working together.

Perhaps there's a bit of PC in this appointment to try and unite some of these entities.

What makes you think the Phoenix aren't aware of Hay's abilities?

I think there could definitely be some of this, with the appointment.

But of course it ain't a good enough reason, when deciding on your national coach.

Personally I think they should have taken a caretaker coach (Hay or Buckingham or both), away in November.

The most important people in this jigsaw are the AWs senior players, not the various squabbling factions of NZ domestic football, that they will know or care squat about. Get their feedback on a caretaker coach, up close. What's the hurry with a full time appointment now.

mute point as Hay only has an A Licence and he'd need a pro licence for the Nix job

moot point...moot

My point was I don't think the Phoenix are naive enough to believe Hay is a competent coach so if it's a decision to align the tribes they have horribly misunderstood what drives the tribes or their understanding of the people involved.
