OMG yes. I remember these columns being just so very "basic" in their analysis, and they betrayed the fact that he came from an era (and location) where there was very little thought applied to how the game is played.

Many top coaches now are absolute football nerds

JD mentioned above that he thought that NZ team who played Oz at Craven Cottage 'knocked the ball around'. It sure as heck didn't!

I also did not enjoy watching his under 17 team do nothing with the ball, just knocking it sideways at the back for minutes on end until the opposition pressed, at which point they hoofed it up to Mata.

I saw some good stuff from his Easts team both pre and post Ole, but for me, he has a lot to prove and IMO the best thing he could do is give Des a big pay rise and a lot of responsibility

Haha no, very much a sarcastic remark

Sorry JD, badly written, I spotted your sarcasm, the "he" in my sentence was Danny Hay

personally while I'm a bit dubious about Hay as coach, I ultimately prefer to see us managed by a kiwi. Not just because of some nationalist preference, but because I think our football will only improve when our coaching improves, and if NZ won't give kiwi coaches a chance who will?

I somewhat agree.  I wouldn't go quite as far to say I wouldn't want someone like Des, or Emblem, or Greenie should he develop further, that have coached in the NZ system for years and have shown a commitment to NZ.  What I don't want are fly by nighter imports that look good theoretically on paper that have no understanding of NZ and are just using us as a line on their CV.

LOL above - you had me at Hudson.

Has a 2IC been announced for Hay?

I really enjoyed the way the U23's played the other night - miss a man, overlapping runs - wow Des - only a couple of weeks with the lads.

As much as I enjoy Hay's educated left-foot Kiwi roots, I prefer Buckingham Palace.

Good question about the 2IC, I haven't seen it mentioned at all, but I did notice that Des mentioned rather emphatically in an interview that he was on board

Des Buckingham's contract with NZ Football as under-23 men's coach also has him as an All Whites assistant coach. That expires at the end of the Olympics next year (or sooner, if they don't qualify).

Same goes for Jose Figueira's contract as under-17 men's coach (which expires at the end of the year).

Would be surprised if Jose went to Europe in November for the Ireland/Lithuania matches, as he'll have only been back in NZ at his main job (Auckland City) for less than a week (at most) following the U17WC, which will have kept him away for the final two weeks of pre-season.

The only comment Hay has made re: staff so far is wanting to get other former All Whites involved – even if on a window-to-window basis.

And it was an unrealistic comment; 'If we play in America, I'll invite Ryan Nelsen along'.

I'm not sure where Nelsen lives, but I'm pretty sure he's not 5 minutes from everywhere in the US, although he did have superman like qualities, so hmmm

It seemed to be more about Hay himself not being asked to contribute in the past maybe?

That's more about mentoring than coaching.  To be honest, I still feel less concerned about an All Whites old boys network than I do about an Austrian old boys network!

Agreed i think we need to give "Kiwi" or coaches from NZ oppourtunities where possible; however the All Whites sill deserve the best coach available, and the right coach from overseas can also help develop coaches within our system.

Yeah I saw that and laughed. He wants to see a 40,000+ stadium half empty. For all his years in Auckland and he still can't smell the roses. Those games in Wellington were sell outs and jamned packed. Good luck on doing that up there.

I just don't even know where to start with this.  He will definitely get his way, it's not like NZF ever actually wanted to host in Wellington, so this is just what they needed to shift it.

I think its a good thing, the more people you can get at a venue the better. Selling out Edan park would be massive.

It's interesting that what many All Whites supporters (myself included) consider to be one of the highlights of following the national team, that is, the qualifier against Bahrain in 2009 he considers to be "a bit of a burden". Do we take it from this that he doesn't want to "burden" supporters with such success in the future? I can't fathom the logic that says we had success at a venue so we shouldn't continue to play there.

Im in Auckland, the games have to be in Wellington.  Its a great trip down, the atmosphere is awesome and the whole city puts on a party atmosphere. Simply put it just works. Keep the games in Welly.

think he measn its a burden, in its a very high benchmark to live up to, to create that atmosphere again. Bit like the All Whites suffered for years in the shadow of the 1982 team

If this is the type of thinking we will see more of from Hay, I am not looking forward to his tenure. his logic make no sense and imagine he used that with the squad. "oh I am not picking Wood because he sets to high of a standard for others"... just ridiculous.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

what a clown, "lets try something different" as if the location is going to make it easier top beat Mexico or Peru etc. If Eden park could be at capacity then it would be awesome, but its just not going to happen. Wellington Stadium's size is actually perfect for one thing and that happens to be international football fixtures.

Not impressed. Come on Hay, get started on your WC cycle. Coach well, win games (secure meaningful games first!) and then let's talk about the playoff. Let's do some market and historical research first though eh..

As someone that moved from AKL to WLG in the last 5 years, and while being in AKL I travelled down for each game, I don't think this is such a bad suggestion.Give it a shot once, if it doesn't hit 50K at least then move it back to Wellington. Think about how awesome it would be if we managed to fill Eden Park for a game like that, I mean seriously!

If Auckland football fans actually turned up and filled Eden Park, I'd be one of the first to congratulate them. Sadly though, apathy and politics play too much of a role and the fans don't turn out. That's why they experimented with Wellington. We just go along to support the National team. We turned it into a party and everyone had fun.

Hay has not stimulated debate, he's just made himself look like an arsehole. Take the game to Auckland, if they don't fill it, just remember Mr Hay, We are not being wise after the event.

The crowd of 22,000 plus Nix v Victory in February at Eden Park, shows there is an appetite for big football games in Auckland.

There's a huge difference between playing out in Albany, as opposed to Sandringham.

Was at the Peru v All Whites game. From memory it wasn't quite a sell out, though got mighty close.

Still seemed a bit of feeling to me that the novelty of 2009 had faded somewhat. Not helped by Peru having no big name players (to Kiwis anyway), plus AWs lead in form (think Confeds Cup in Russia) being bang average and them being given little chance against Sth America's 5th best team.

I think low profile playoff opposition like Bahrain (Asia), Honduras (Central America) or Peru (Sth America) - would still drag in at least 38,000 to Eden Park. That's about max capacity at Westpac with temp seating.

Novelty factor, a balmy late summer March night (note playoffs scheduled for March 2022), higher profile opposition, an AWs side with impressive lead in form - and yeah a capacity crowd would be possible. Dream scenario for NZF, would be drawing the Socceroos, with 2nd leg in NZ, after say a draw or close loss in Sydney. Could sell out EP twice over with that game.

Because its a event, Isnt it up to the local council to bid on it or offer something to NZF? sorry guys I don't know how it works.

My personal preference is Wellington, but I have no problem with it being in Auckland as long as the decision is made for the right reasons and not because of the long standing bias of Hay and his pathetic group of 2nd rate ex-all white cronies

I don't have a problem with the game being at Eden Park but I do have a problem with Hay's reasoning. He is basically saying that at least part of the reason we didn't qualify for the last two world cups is that the success of the Bahrain game put too much pressure on the team, and on the fans, and that getting away from Wellington will help get over that. But for starters Mexico and Peru were just better teams than Bahrain, so we were always less likely to get past them. Vs Mexico we were away for the first leg and got hammered, so of course the atmosphere wasn't as good for the home leg. It was obvious we were not going through at that point. With the Peru game, we had the home leg first so of course the atmosphere might not be as good because you don't know what result you need. But even putting that aside, a draw in that game was actually a good result and it seems bizarre to act like it wasn't. It also seems bizarre to focus on motivation and psychology rather than skills and tactics which seem like more obvious areas to focus on. If you just said we want a bigger crowd and left it at that, fine. But this burden comment is just bollocks.

The real issue here is that we get one big game every 4 years. NZ Football claims that it is too hard financially and logistically to organise games for the All Whites at home. I am sick of them trotting out problems, I want them to provide solutions.

Wish NZF would hurry tf up and organise a three match series every year against Australia. Doesn't need top overseas players. 2 games at home, 1 away, switching around every year. It is our biggest/only rivalry in sport and the lack of these fixtures ensures NZ football remains very low on people's radar.
