David Mulligan - Contrasting Views

I've got a secret crush on Mulligan.

I never liked him, but based on Preseason and Friendlies, plus his games for AW's, he has got talent. I have never ever seen him play, but I want to. play him in CM when Lia gets another two cards   but I think he is the right choice for bench as he covers RB as well as CM.

AND HE CAN SCORE GOALS
(probably a heap more than Bertos!! )

I've never really understood the Mulligan hate on here and the podcasts. Yes, I agree he was poor in his 3 (?) starts at the beginning of last season, but others who were poor to start with have been given more tolerance here, plus second chances on the pitch - Kwasnik and Diego spring to mind. Admittedly, Kwasnik didn't get much better in a Phoenix shirt. Diego's comeback has been moderately successful, and I though he had a good first up match as well.
 
I wasn't impressed with Mulligan at the Confed's Cup, but as wiser heads have pointed out, he's not really a fullback - on six matches evidence, I'd have to agree. However, I'd like to see him get a chance in midfield before getting off the fence on him.
u can add steven old and steven odor to that list mate


Old and O'Dor were slightly different in that there weren't any other options around at that stage.

To me, it completely depends on he he is training, if he is pants in training (or doesn't shine consistently) then theres no point in trying him on the field, while if he is training well, and the situation arrises then good for him.  The coach is in the best position to judge this, and I have faith in our coach.

Playing 21/25 games a season is actually only playing half a season in the lower Englsih leages. They play 46 league games during the season, not counting all the cups. If he's played 173 games over 8 years, that means he's played in less than half of league games he could have played in, again not counting the cup games. His track record in England is in fact a record of a journeyman player who was found out not to be good enough at every club he's been at, sooner or later. And at the last few clubs it's been a lot sooner...including the Nix.

Ive mentioned this before but he doesnt have an easy job or situation. The Phoenix xuffer from not being able to give the bench players and non playing subs game time because we cant afford to be part of any A league or state league reserve team competitions. So anytime Mulligan gets to have a run he is coming in to the side without meaningful game time under his belt. The first mistake he makes the fans are on his back and thats going to affect his confidence. Whether you like him or not he is our player and if he does come on the fans have the ability to lift him by giving him some real support. It might just be the sort of confidence lift that could be the difference between a goal saving tackle and missing a tackle that lets in a goal. Think about it.....

no really 46 games in a season. who'd have thought? how'd i know that was the 1st thing you'd say?  anyways who am i to question someone who has obviously followed him so closely. that freekick is obviously simulated as well.  Chen on the bench for defensive cover, keep hating but only mulligan everyone else is class.

Oh, give me a break. He takes free kicks.  Make him captain, Ricki.
 
This isn't pub football, he doesn't get in the team cos he can take free kicks. Sadly, that isn't really a requisite for starting him. being able to play is. Maybe, he should join the NFL and they can shunt him on to kick and then hook him afterwards.
 
All the stats and stories I've seen about him suggest that he's been ordinary, to say the very least, everywhere he's been. On the few occasions that I've actually seen him play, he's been sh*te.

and one free kick doesn't mean crap.  Considering he is a defender, I'd prefer to trade some free kick skills for some more denfensive skills.
 
I suggest you search you tube for "Mulligan" + "great" + "Tackle" + "defending" and see what comes up.

Who said anything about Ferrante? Mulligan may well end up on the bench now considering our backline resources are dangerously stretched.

It's just that such a move doesn't inspire any confidence in many of the fans given Mulligan's obvious lack of ability at this level.

Actually, I have. For the laast 3 seasons at QPR when we've signed more Managers than players, some of the new player signings have copped just that!! Paladini signing players that the manager/s weren't looking at. Parejo, Ledesma, Borrowdale, Alberti to name a few. Sad but true! next assumption please.

well if mullie doesnt make bench presumably ferrante will. as for lack of ability, u mean like our backup goalkeeper?

Why do people insist on saying he is a midfielder when he has hardly ever played there in his professional career. He has made his career out of being a right back and has come to club where he is not got enough to get a run there. Come to think of it, its been that way everywhere he has been

Hopefully we ditch him at the end of the season.

so what did he actually do that was so bad jeff? he gave away 1 freekick and had 1 shot on goal in 3 games for one of the worst nix sides to have graced the comp. there was no horrible missed tackles, turnovers etc ala plodder,old and odor. So refresh my memory, what did he do so wrong? did he get shown up like manny the other week?
PS- the freekick thing was more if u can kick a ball like that surely u can do basics like passing etc but yeah easy to flog a deadhorse i guess

that's a rather large assumption bbs, for what its worth the total time ive seen mulligan play ive not been overly impressed and for a supposed free kick specialist I don't think I've seen him take one for the nix. The one chance he might of had was taken by Daniel in season one I think. A just cos he can apparently hit a decent free kick doesn't mean he can pass a ball and tackle, they are completely different skill sets.

Heard some talk of Mulligan potentially being a soldi  bench warmer for us against the jets...

Is this some joke, considering that caceras and mckain are out and extra seats for finals..

Who will our subs be?? and will mulligan actually get a chance of getting a contract for next season, by playing in the finals?

no surely not.. costa, deigo, bertos, crowther and rojas will be the bench??? or will we have a defensive option.... o god..

Saw him the other day at the supermarket. His Mrs is a looker. Maybe she can play football? In all respect though all it takes is him to have 5mins game time and fire in a wicked free kick for him to be loved.

History this season has showed that Ricky's prefered to use Diego over both Mulligan and Ferrante when short-handed in this type of situation, so common sense would say that that will be the case this time too.

The bench will likely be Crowther, Daniel, Diego, Dadi, Costa.

I'm a Mulli fan and think he takes an unfair amount of flak here and also raises questions over Rickis AW selection policies when he includes him but doesn't even put him on the bench for the Nix.

TBH his severe lack of match fitness is glaring which would surely preclude him from taking part this weekend.  He will clearly move on at the end of the season, I just hope a club like the Heart picks him up and gives him a decent chance unlike us.

(why isn't Oughton and Campbell in the AWs for instance)

Probably, but I'll be disappointed to see either Diego or Costa.

And with regards to my line-up, I just don't think Reddy is up to it.  Past few weeks he's proven himself to be rubbish so Troy, with his great fitness, is playing run-away keeper.

Diego has done a job when he's been called on - e.g. against Newcastle in 40 degree weather. Hasn't been great, but not horrible either. Mulligan would have a higher chance of being completely horrid.
 
I think Ricki, who sees them train every day, would know more than a bunch of guys who have maybe only seen him train 3 or 4 times and play a game against the Mainland XI or whatever it was.
 
Whenever players don't play for a long time people forget how sh*te they are.

Crikey, poor Mulligan, I hope he doesn't read this forum. Boy some of you have it in for the lad. He can't be that bad and if he wants some game time he should try the NZFC. Trouble is he'd have to forget about anything but expenses but wouldn't that be better than not playing at all.
 
Don't worry Dave, most of those laying into you couldn't fit their fat stomachs into a pair of footy shorts, let alone kick a ball.
