I'm not sure that counts if teams are amateur.

Do you remember Dean Gordon?  In 2006 he played for all of the following Crook Town (2 stints), Blackpool, Lewes, Worksop Town, Albany United, Auckland City and the NZ Knights.

That's a total of 7 clubs in one year!

I'm sure Mulli has no problems club-wise.

I know he hasn't played for the nix.. BUT, wouldn't someone who is in a a-league squad still be better than someone playing NZFC? for example had Mulligan been playing NZFC would he have been called up into the squad?

But, wouldn't someone knocking on the door of an A-League squad and is PLAYING EVERY WEEK in the NZFC be a better option.
I don't think Mulli would stand out in the NZFC. If he would then maybe he should consider it next season. Perhaps Stu Jacobs should shoulder tap him.

Its no longer a problem.

I haven't seen Mulligan play that often, but by the sound of it, he doesn't seem like a great player?? I'm sure playing all those games in the championship must have counted for something?

Having watched Mully play here (UK) in the midfield for Scumthorpe before he ended up at the Nix I thought he played reasonably well, definitely upto A-League standards from what I've seen of the Nix and the other teams over the last 4-5 years.

I think many ppl on this forum have made judements based on a couple of early Nix games last season when Ricky was still trying out different style tactics and the poor AW performances of '08/'09.

I think he would have done better in the Right Wingback position then Coombes did against Mexico.  Coombes was very average, but not too many ppl are sticking it to him.

You just have to read the game thread to see what people thought of Coombes and it's my point exactly that surely a guy who was a good enough to play at championship/a-league level even as a squad member should be better than an amateur. But you say everyone doesnt rate Mulligan after his horror performances at right back for the nix but if it was just the fans who didnt rate him then ricki would have played him somewhere along the line if he thought mully was good enough, which he hasnt. So the impression im getting is that he hasnt even done enough in training to prove that he's worth some game time.

Yeah, but he's not professional...although to be honest, he was quite awful against Mexico, and at one point I said I'd even prefer Mulligan to him during the game...which is saying something, as Mulligan is a very limited player who's nowhere near the A-league standard. He'd be a solid NZFC player, but certainly wouldn't be a standout even in that competition.

I think the fact that Ricki preferred to pick Coombes (who was absolute mud, by the way) over a player he sees every day at training, says it all really.

Mud > Mulligan > Coombes

Where to now for him? Is he even going to be able to carry on as a professional footballer after spending the whole season plus most of last season carrying the oranges? Don't seee much hope for him but hope I'm wrong....

Wouldn't judge him on one game. And from what i have seen, he is a step above the NZFC.. unless he has all his confidence this year and last, sitting on the bench.

Yeah, he did play left back. Aaron Clapham played right back. Got absolutely shredded down the flanks while that combo was on.

He could play NZFC, but wouldn't be a stand-out player. Too many problems with his game.

So it is a bit rough to judge him from that performance.  But overall I agree that there are a number of players who'd be better than him (Vicelich, Barron, Clapham to name but a few).

I'm judging Mulligan from his cumulative (non) performances for the Nix, in both league and friendly games.

I brought up the TWs game just to illustrate that he's had his struggles at that level too.

People seem to think it's the only time he's been spotted. 

I think they have played TeeDubs 3 times this season, without a number of pre-season games he was involved in.

A real mystery.  46 consecutive games without making the matchday squad. Thought he might have got a shot at some stage.  Must be pretty demoralising knowing you were training week after week for no reason.

He seemed surprised to have someone talk to him on the Phoenix/Hurricanes day, let alone ask for a photo.

I don't care how much you're making - if you're a professional footballer training week in, week out and never getting close to getting picked in the matchday 15, let alone the starting 11, that's gotta start playing with your head.  Surely every footballer wants to play.
 
How hard must it have been to watch the team doing so well and knowing he was on the outer with no real chance of being involved.  I think he just stopped turning up to team events after a while too - he certainly wasn't at the awards night.
 
When you think back to all the fanfare he arrived under and how much was made of his versatility, it's incredible that he hasn't had the chance to play somewhere (left-back, right-back, midfield) at some point in the last 46 matches, or at least (given his ability to play a number of positions) been an option on the bench.
 
I mean, even Chen played for Christ's sake.  Twice.  Dreadfully.  And Mulligan was even behind him in the pecking order.

Yeh Ricki was talking up the possibility of him playing for a while there and then Diego got the nod ahead of him. It does seem strange he couldn't even get a few minutes at the end of a game at some point to make a case.

Everybody else in the squad got some game time I thought. Seems a bit harsh that his only substantial  game time of the season was against Spain! Yet he wasn't good enough for any time in the A-league.

Agree with LF1 on this.

In Rickys book he intimated he came back not fit enough and thinking he was to good for the league or at least that the league was much better than he expected.

I said earlier in the season he was made the scapegoat for a horrendous 2/3 games early last season, was anyone made a scapegoat in a similar way after some pretty horrid performances this season?

Obviously something else going on personality wise, but if that was the case why did Ricki (until recently) keep picking him in All White squads?

Wasn't a problem for Winston Bogard at Chelsea.


As for Mulligan himself, he has shown very little of any value in every game I've seen him play since the U17 World Cup in 1999, so I'm not really surprised he was marginalised so completely this season.
