To be honest, the fact that he is an utility cover player in many positions counts against him when specialist players have taken hold of the positions.

He would serve best by working as a midfielder specialist that can work on distributing the ball more but sometimes go forward on the odd occasion.

It must be hard for him to try and knock off Tim Brown, Vince Lia or Manny Muscat and Troy Hearfield from the starting line-up this season when they are all doing their jobs.

So to be fair. He needs game time elsewhere. NZFC may not be good enough in his POV, so he is going Vic State League, I think.

The best I've ever seen him play was as an attacking central midfield player.

Takes a pretty mean free kick too.

Like Jeremy Christie he's just struggled to impose himself on the A League.  But that doesn't mean he's not a good player.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

I'm inclined to say not, but others think he'd struggle to make Naenae's starting XI.

There's only one David Mulligan!  (though reading this thread would make you wonder)

Does the thread title really need 'contrasting views' in it...doesn't everyone accept that he is rubbish?

His performances for the nix weren't great, but i'm not willing to conceed that a failed stint at one club makes a player crap (thus my Smeltz comparison at Halifax).

I think he still has a future and i'd rather support his efforts than belittle a guy who has achieved more than anyone else on this forum as a footballer.

He has had failed stints at quite a few clubs - Port Vale, Grimsby, Sc**thorpe (so basically at his last four clubs).

Also, for someone who's apparently a sensational free kick taker, he has scored 10 goals in his 10 years of professional football.

I'm with touchme on this. I don't see the point bagging the guy, particularly as he no longer plays for the Nix. His record certainly shows a journeyman who has failed to impress for long, but I wish him all the best for the future. Hopefully he can show promise to some one and can return the favour to any team that take him on board.

If he is so hideously terrible as a footballer, why have any teams, let alone the Nix, taken him on board?

If he had a youth team he would have had the chance to push for a first team spot. We didn't, so it was very hard to get into the first team.

As ricki said in his book, he was surprised by the speed of the league when he came back.

I  hope he goes and finds a team where he can play regularly and get some confidence back.

This debate/thread seems very pointless now...

How about start a new thread when he finds a club. I wish him well.

When I watched him play for Sc**thorpe that was where he shined.  Hes defo no RB as we all know.

Yeh, just think, if David Mulligan had been thrown into that def midfield role instead of Manny, he might have shone like Manny did and had a great season.
That was his chance, but Ricki opted for Manny, and I guess fair enough.
Good luck Mully.

Do the names George, Cleberson, O'Dor and Chen ring any bells? It's what we do, it's like adopting a starving African child. We adopt horrendously bad footballers and give them a chance to wear nice training gear and watch us play every week, then we send them out into the wilderness to fend for themselves.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I think it's a shame he didn't get a few more chances to show us what he could do. As I pointed out earlier, there have been other players who had more opportunities despite a poor run/start in a Phoenix shirt. Perhaps a consequence of the team doing much better this year.

All the best David.

South Melbourne have been willing to provide as much help as possible, but were unable to spare the AWs an orange cutter.

True. I guess someone needs to get the balls at shooting practise and clean the training gear.

Its no longer a problem.

I see Mully played the full 90 in the midfield against Auckland City.  Did anyone witness this game?

zinidane, did you see this?

City played really well at the start having most of the half chances but poor finishing let them down. AW's scored a goal against the run of play from a free kick which Banners fumbled, not helped by static defence. Second half all Allwhites scoring two quick goals after restart. City defence on walk about duty, very soft centre.
Late subs by city spiced up their effort a bit, especially the Chilean.
Best player on the park by far was Mulligan, give him 9......really good work ethic, good movement of the ball and read the game well. (No I'm not his dad, football writer sitting next to me also rated him)
Clapham did well and did his chances no harm. 7
Smeltz 5. Probably used to more intensity.
Good to see Paston back............not really tested, needs lots more game time before WC.
Bertos 6.5.
Barron 6
Brown 5.5
Sigmond 6......didn't get forward enough for me. (3 in defence) When he did drive forward 7.5
Vicelich not really tested.

Best player for City, McGeorge 8.5

For a game that was meant to be played behind closed doors it was very pleasing to see such a good size crowd. AW's signing autographs for the many kids who ran onto the field after the game was worth turning up to witness just in itself.

I watched the Auckland game and Mulligan played in center midfield and he surprised me with how well he played. Coming back from the halftime break I overheard Brian Turner say to mulligan " I have been impressed with your work out there, keep it up, its great" A short while later Mulligan scored a nice goal.

So he played well against an average NZFC midfield that Canterbury tore apart a couple of weeks ago.
That gets him on the park at the WC does it?
B.T. was making him feel good, Mulligan is not the only player BT has said nice things to in the last few weeks and the others aren't going to this WC.
I think he will go as well as Clapham.
