mulligan represents a big problem for nz footy - too bigger gap between asb prem and pro footy.

unfortunately there seems to be no option beneath the a-league for new zealand's second tier of player

good on mulligan for taking the step down.  i'd expect him to dominate too.

however, i hope for his sake that he doesn't follow the path of big jim and bazza and retire prematurely.

the asb prem just cannot sustain an international footballer and the all whites need their squad players.

i'd like to add that i hoped that the phoenix would have catered for the likes of bannatyne, barron and mulligan.  it seems that herbert has decided that hearfield and that crazy gangly aussie keeper are are more worthwhile.  i beg to differ.

Interesting article on the front page about Mulligan attending S-league trials for foreign players between Nov 2 and 7.

Would like to see him head back to the UK and give it another go there than the S-League.

So he can play every second game in the third tier?

He flies out tonight.  Apparently the league doesn't start until Feb so he should be able to complete a whole season in the ASBP

Heard on Live Sport that he's off to China!
Going to Hannan and he's leaving tonight for a trial there.

City will be without All Whites midfielder David Mulligan who flew out on Thursday night for further trials in China. If successful, he won't be back.

Did mulligan go to Henan construction team?

Not only that, not one player was cautioned or injured and David Mulligan had returned from China where he went for trials and looks sure to be available for the important matches.

^ This.

Only watched the 1st half and then went to bed cos it was boring me to tears, but Mulligan did exactly f**k all. Unless I was watching a different game, obviously.

PMSL at all the "Mulligan was absolutely fantastic" rubbish being posted on here.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

He was much better second half. Helped by the fact we played a passing game rather than hoof-and-hope in the first.

midfield was way better in the second half, helped mainly by Kosta providing a some movement up front, wood, kille, and smeltz were like statues all night.

Mulligan surprised me, he looked a better player than I though he was. That might be due to all the slagging off he gets on here and because I haven't seen him play that much.

Fuck this stupid game

This is exactly right - Mulligan was pants in the first half, but Kosta coming on in the second helped him out.

Kosta was dropping into the midfield - and centrally too - to receive the ball, forcing the Chinese midfield to drop a bit further back, and opening up a bit more space for Mulligan in the deeper midfield areas. With time and space, he was able to pick out a couple of decent passes and have a decent crack at goal. As a defensive midfielder, he was still very poor though - didn't read the game well for most part and ended up being late on many an occasion (main reason why he committed so many fouls too).

To be fair it is idiotic to say Mully was "did exactly f**k all" when you didn't watch the whole game. Fair enough if people have different opinions on how he played in the second half, but in all honesty very few players had a good first half. I agree with El Grap that Kosta made Mully's job a lot easier but I still feel Mully played alright in the second half.

Man you talk sh*t, EVERYONE was crap in the first half. Kosta made the whole midfield look good in the 2nd half.

Of course we were woeful in the first half - the issue is that Mulligan's inadequacy as a holding midfielder was still pretty apparent in the second half too.

I am no mulligan Cheerleader but give the guy a break. He had a good game and if you think he was poor, suggest you watch the game again. Hope the lad did well enough to perhaps pick up a contract somewhere in asia

I've seen the game twice - and thought he was worse the second time I saw it.

You really don't seem to like the guy do you?  While I'm not a Mully lover (or hater), I think your often too hard on him, still better then nearly all the other mids that we (NZ) have.

I just went in to the game with very little expectations of him and he proved he offers much more than Jeremy Christie!

I can't make any comment about last night's game as I have not seen it. I have only seen David Mulligan play a few times but I have never rated him and he would have to improved out of site to make me believe that he is good enough for the AW's,

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Guys forget about Mulligan playing for another club in a good league above Auckland City level.
He's 28 has already played 70 games for a English Championship club and 137 games in other English league and cup comps.
One performance for the AW's won't change things.
But ups to him for what he has done as a Pro, spent too long at the Nix getting crapped on.

I quite clearly stated, and thought it would have been fairly obvious to anyone with a rudimentary grasp of the English langauge, that my comment about him doing f**k all clearly related to his performance in the 45 minutes of the game that I watched. So I would argue that the view I presented that he did exactly f**k all in the first half of the game is far from idiotic.

From what I have seen since, his 2nd half performance was an improvement but I'm still mystified at how well some people seem to think he played
