The answers for me reflect whether or not there is anything on the game. Personally I would far rather watch the All Whites against Thailand or Japan or South Korea or .... in an Asian qualifier than against most other teams other than the top 4 or 5 in the world.

Not wanting to reignite the OFC vs AFC debate but I envy Australia having alternating campaigns for the WC and AFC i.e. more games that matter.

The marketing campaign for the Paraguay games has also been flaky - some Oprah type home coming. Should have been along the lines of watch our premiership players (Ryan, Reid....) against stars from (fill in clubs) playing for the 17th rank team in the world.

To be honest, I think there is a sh*t load riding on these games, far more than your typical friendly.  Reputation in the football world seems to play a huge part in the individual success of nations - if you win a few games, make a world cup, don't embarrass yourself, get your players noticed, get more friendlies against better opposition, attract more fans and players, win a few games etc... - it all ends up in upward spiral, its happened before (hint: australia).

If, on the other hand, we fail to score goals or even be competitive - its a pretty quick trip back to the bottom of the pile. I will sure as hell be cheering as loudly as possible for every single goal the all whites manage to score. If we want to have those AFC ties that Australia enjoys, we better prove that we are deserve it...

Better would have been Hard News, Feverish, 2B, ML etc jumping over fences and stealing white sheets off washing lines, then meeting up in a back alley. One brings a floral sheet...

How so? Street parade was for efforts in the World Cup.

This is a friendly. What's the connection?

as in lack of fans going to the games. TBH, there is no reason why they shouldn't of sold out. I mean, everyone was football mad for 2 weeks. You'd think some of that would go along to watch these games. Enough to pack the stadiums.

TBH,

Should of had both games in CHCH ;)

I would have gladly swapped the ChCh 5 Dec Nix game (back to Wgtn) with the AW vs honduras game.

No disrespect intended but for many all that counts for squat when it comes to selling tickets - there needs to be a purpose for the game e.g. xxxx cup or qualification for WC, AFC or whatever to generate excitement. I don't think NZers get friendlies.

Rugby have actually done a very good job in turning friendlies in to meaningful games by putting cups at stake for just about every international but it is a different situation to football because they had no WC until 87. Similar situation for cricket as rugby. Football has had a WC and regional championships for much longer so friendlies are just that friendlies.

I really can't see All Whites games between the tail end (i.e after the Pacific Island games) of WC qualification campaigns generating much excitement until we get into the AFC or AFC east or AFC whatever.

Just my view and remember I bought tickets - think what those who didn't buy tickets are thinking.

No thanks. I'd take an AW and Phoenix game.

No doubt we'd sell well for both games.

Maybe it just means more to him to play his first international(s) at home, in front of his family and friends and maybe 40-50 thousand people who f**king love him, than to stay behind and worry about whether he's in the match day squad for an away trip to Wolverhampton.

[QUOTE=liverpoolfan1]

You keep saying "nothing game", "meaningless", "basically no-one turning up", "crap crowds", "handful of fans".... but I'm not sure any of those apply to these matches.  Sure, they're not qualifiers for anything  but they have massive significance given what happened at the World Cup and the constant urgings from just about everyone for NZF to capitalise and "not repeat the mistakes of '82".  They are the first step towards keeping the All Whites in the shop window, retaining football's profile here and making these guys accessible to their fans.

Estimates are for around 20 thousand people at each game ... apart from the Bahrain game I don't think there's been a home crowd that big for an All Whites game for nearly three decades.  It's hardly a crap crowd.

Gee, what's your point Vanessa?

Agree with you about the crowds less than 20k being disgusting though.

On the other hand, even if the crowds were 5k I still say the overseas players have to come back. We are never going to build anything here if everyone just gives up at the first hurdle.

Anyway, PAX or stfu...

Whats the PAX Now?

I have to agree the crowd figures are disappointing. I can appreciate what many have said about the lack of hype in the media, but the timing hasn't helped with the Commonwealth Games on at the same time. The focus in most newsrooms is on Dehli and so sports reporters are not thinking of as many different angles as possible for the AW games, like they did during the world cup and qualifier. This is partly because it is a "friendly" - it is harder to hype. And following the exhaustive WC coverage, I can tell you from experience that it is hard to come up with new angles - they've all been covered extensively. I'm sure sports reporters that come on here would confirm that. Hopefully in the next few days we can get a few more stories out there, particularly as the players from each of the teams arrive in the country - and get some more people to these fantastic games.

Fair enough - this is a PAX thread after all, but I wasn't talking about what the general public in new zealand think, but how the world views new zealand football as a whole and how these games are important in the bigger scheme of things (based on results) rather than whether anyone turns up or not. I think you get that, but we're just talking on slightly different wavelengths.

Not trying to be a dickhead but I suspect NZF may be ruing their decision to give Auckland the game.  I mean, I do hope ticket sales turn around and it goes well and at least breaks even.  I'll put my bias aside for the sake of the All Whites and hope for the best.  But yeah, just saying what I'm sure many have been thinking.

Sorry, but you are being a dickhead. Auckland pax > Wellington the Home of Football pax, that's an undisputable fact. I know that people from what's left of Christchurch think that they're superior to everyone else, but what makes you think you could be doing better than Wellington, the Home of Football?

Last I heard Wellington pax was higher than Auckland but I concede that that could have changed.  And I didn't mention 'Wellington', 'the capital' or anything which even refers to that city so I'm not entirely sure where that came from.  But I'll answer your question as if I had mentioned it.  Wellington's game is on a Tuesday, hardly ideal.  If Christchurch had the game Auckland has (which is Saturday) then I think we could get a better crowd than Wellington on a Tuesday, definitely.  I also think that we'd get a better crowd on a Saturday than Auckland would get on the same day.  The reasons for this have been covered numerous times so I'm sure you know them and I'll leave it at that.

New Zealand Football chief executive Michael Glading said as of yesterday, ticket sales were sitting around 13,000 for the Honduras game on Saturday in Auckland and 12,000 for the Paraguay game on Tuesday in Wellington.

The "reasons" seem to boil down to "we in Christchurch think that people in Auckland are dicks".

With regards to pax I was going from the video put up yesterday or the day before on the 3 News website lamenting poor sales (doesn't appear to have a date on it) which mentions about 12 000 tickets sold for Auckland with Wellington being only a bit better but, like I said, I realize that could've changed.

And try to be slightly more mature than putting words in our mouths like "The "reasons" seem to boil down to "we in Christchurch think that people in Auckland are dicks"."  Numerous people have pointed to woeful crowds and a generally terrible reputation Auckland football has while some very encouraging signs in Christchurch.

The bad reputation of Auckland football crowds is precisely why NZF has made the right move taking things to NHS. Auckland is a market of 1.4 million people and the heartland of the amateur game in this country, especially for women. We should be shoring up our weak points.

sorry to get in on the auck v chch debate, but someone else pointed out that southland are playing canterbury that night at home for the ranfurly shield, so wouldn't a lot of canterbury sports fans go down to invercargill to watch that game instead of an All Whites match?

Even simpler- every self-respecting cantab will be at home, watching on telly. I'm sure it's a good reason why there is no game in CHCH this weekend.
