Would def add Barry to that list of starters.

If Barry is a starter we are def farked.
Ain't it funny how people cry for Foster, Barry, Wisnewski, Whinham, Clegg to play more for the Football Ferns. They do realise the Phoenix are coming last (by a decent way) in the A-League Women? It's just bias because the Nix girls are the ones they watch week in week out.
Nope. Not funny. The Phoenix women have scored 8 goals in their last 2 games vs Football ferns two goals in their last 8 games. Your logic seems to be: The Phoenix women's team are bottom of the table so therefore none of the players must have any talent or be better than what is currently in the Ferns line up? That having these players in the Phoenix should mean that they are near the top of the league? We are not saying that the Ferns would become world beaters with these changes just that they would be able to complete 4 passes while in possession. Your implied rationale seems to be, lets keep the status quo and not try anything new.
That's not my logic. I just think people go a bit overboard with it. Even though for large parts I agree.

How many goals did the Phoenix Women score in all the games before those 2 games? Not to mention the most recent one against WSW. You're cherry picking now.

Well, the Ferns are doing a good job of lowering the publics expectations of them for the WC!

Meanwhile the Matildas beat Spain, 3-2 in Sydney. A side they lost 7-0 (admittedly a 2nd string Matildas from memory) less than 8 months ago.

Not cherry picking, really going on recent form, development and their future potential. You can see they are getting better but what do you see with the Ferns over the last 5 years? Just backsliding. What will happen at world cup? Even if by some miracle the current squad makes it out of the group they are going to play unattractive football and then the senior players are going to all retire, so why give them the privilege they have not earned of playing at a home world cup?

I don’t think we benefit from playing two centre forwards. Wilkinson is a leaner, stronger faster player with a better first touch most of the time, compared to 4-5 years ago. So keep her up top. Jale deserves more chances and playing time. She played some good key passes. There are a number of starting ALW players on the Aussie team, so the ALW does provide the ability to compare how our players compete against Gorrie etc. Hassett plays best when she has space to create, so I think we play her as a 10 behind Wilkinson. Then two from Cleverly, Steinmetz and Bott and Percival as holding mid. We were often out numbered in centre mid tonight so dropping a forward would help that. Realistically we will never dominate teams on the world stage- asides from against Oceania teams. The fifa rankings aren’t a true reflection of where we are at. We are probably somewhere around 35-50 ranked. And set to drop further over time as the women’s game grows, even if we develop better players. Other countries have bigger numbers and more professional clubs so it’s easier for them to add a women’s team - even if their whole squad only earns the same as 3-4 male team players a week. I don’t think we have anything to lose by playing Sheaf and Edwards half a game each in the next game. It was interesting to hear the mics were a lot louder tonight- you could hear the players organising at corners and Naylor was more vocal tonight. She punched well. Yes could have done better with the goals. But did make a couple of good saves too. Moore was pretty good in the air- the anniversary to the day of the USA game! But was caught flat footed/square to the ball when the ball was played behind her a couple of times so was slower to turn and chase. Again like the Nix I don’t understand the obsession with playing out lots from the back. Anton got lots of hospital passes in the first half and our central mids got swarmed when they got the ball played to them out of defence. Cleverly did we there most of the time. Would be good to see some combination play dropping it back from the mids to then play vertical to Wilkinson with Hassett underneath her. Was a bit sad there wasn’t a big increase in urgency around 60minute mark onwards as they in theory should have been pushing to score to stay in the World Cup. Nice to see Foster on the field- thought she might have taken that last corner? We looked a few times at the end to get our fullbacks forward but the final passes weren’t there. The trouble with having Riley and for the Nix Knott as captains is that the coaches are very reluctant to drop them if they aren’t playing well. Bowen would be a great captain for the next cycle. Or maybe a group of 4? Bowen, Leat, Chance and Clegg? I think we really missed Bott tonight the most. In the next camp it would be cool to see Clegg, Whinham, Rood, Percival and Flea. A couple of key moments could have resulted in a different score line tonight. Bowen clears early the first goal. Chance buries her shot- like she did against Korea. Or Jales shot that hit Chance looked like it was going in too. This game was way less frustrating than the game against Portugal. So that is progress. Look forward to the next game. A score draw would be another step forward. This team would also have to learn how to defend a lead at the end of the if that comes to it. Fingers crossed!

An improved performance that gives some hope. But a big mistake not bringing in form Clegg into this block of games for a look, given how Rennie has struggled. Who knows her signature cutting in off her left, shooting with her right foot may get quickly shut down at this higher level, but it’s worth a look at least.

Why didn't they bring her in as a Replacement training player, as Foster initially was. Get a taste of the Ferns environment, and International football. Now if they bring her in for the April window (as they should) she will be less prepared than she should have been.

Ok so genuinely wondering, who thinks that was an actual improvement in performance? Or was it more a case of Argentina being a lot worse than Portugal?

Personally I still don't find that loss particularly palatable, certainly it still hasn't given me any confidence going into the world cup.

People saying it was improved performance? Is that based on the fact it wasn't 4 or 5? that we've been so accustomed too.

A few nights ago it was probably the lowest point in many decades of football so it had to get slightly better right.

Anyone thinking this bunch (staff and players) are getting us to a respectable point in this world cup needs to pull their heads in! I have, i use to think the crowd could get them over a the line in a game or two....no crowd is doing that with this lot.

Where is NZF in all of this? High Performance? Is there such a thing anymore?

Is no their no accountability in the game? or sport in NZ in general? Fans, stakeholders and sponsors deserve better. The game is being killed off.

Klimkova has to go and she has to go now.

I think we were better. Or less bad. Probably only cos we were prepared to bypass the midfield occasionally. At this stage I think humping it to Wilkinson and Jale is an ok option.

I agree with all of that, however I can't imagine we'll hear a peep from NZF. They seem to have made it clear that failure is more than acceptable for them.

It hit was a more even game, I think if we played Portugal again on Thursday it would be a closer game. Argentina is more our level I think we can get a result against them. From the 2008 u17wwc we hosted that Paul Temple coached who from that cohort of players kicked on to play professionally? The likes of Briony Fisher weren’t even playing the game a few years later and she was the captain. That is fine if you don’t want to play, no worries. But until we have a bigger pool of player depth we will not be able to win against the top 20 teams unless it’s a flukey goal. Coach Education investment will have big return if we can increase the number of C, B,A and pro licence coaches. I think Iceland with a population of 400,000 people has like 4,000 licensed coaches- which enabled them to punch above their weight in recent euro competitions.

Enjoyed watching the game live. Lots of kids there. NZ put in a better performance. I was frustrated that Jale was open on the right flank for the first 30 min and never once got a direct pass. She then moved in centrally swapping with Rennie and got the ball occasionally. Argentina pressed us and we made the mistakes to keep encouraging them. Our midfielders would have three pressing them, but our press was disappointing. Rennie would be the only one at times. I was very curious about our offside goal. Didn't see replay at the game. It would have given us such a lift.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Losing to everyone, by somewhere between a little and a lot, is not a good place to be

But I guess, since this seems to be the case, we want to see a clear sense of direction and improvement

It's definitely time to start bedding down a starting XI and developing patterns

If we bomb out of this world cup - NZF have a lot to answer for with this group of staff and players.

How the hell did Klimkova get 6 years? oh wait cos Ali Riley said so. Shambles.

That’s what makes it hard to take when the coach chucks Taylor in then out and completely rejigs the formation from one game to next

Our inability to get into goal scoring positions is a real problem.
We look like we are set to attack with space available and time again the pass is poor and the opposition defence pick up the ball with ease. It's like the players panic and get a rush of blood if they are anywhere in the final third.
We very rarely get in behind. And crosses are a bit of hit and hope.
If we don't score in this next game at home. I'm worried about the players confidence and mentality leading into a WC.

For me the ball speed is just far to slow especially when playing from the back, the ball has to move faster then the person pressing and often its not putting receiver under pressure before the ball arrives. Though we managed to get into some good wide areas but unfortunately have complete lack of ability to cross.
I am alway baffled by how pro players can't pass with both feet. Wilkson coming back in he right a number of times as she can't use her left. I liked Jale, think she has a bit more about her if comparing to Wilkson who is a physical presence.

Matildas have secured a friendly against England in London, in the April window. Penultimate international window before the start of the Women’s World Cup in July.

They play Jamaica tomorrow, in last game of their own little mini tourney in Aussie. Wins over Spain (3-2) & Czech Republic (4-0) to date.

No news yet on who the Ferns are to play in that April window (2 friendlies). Suggest for the confidence it be someone beatable. Though we initially thought Portugal & Argentina were winnable games! Hopefully Esson/Leat, Percival & Longo (longshot maybe) are all available. Either keeper & Percival will solidify that defence.

I hope I'm wrong, but I reckon we'll only see Nayler in goal going forward, it's incredibly short sighted by Klimkova not to give your reserve keepers some game time pre world cup - but I'm starting to some sense in the #Klimkovaout movement.

Esson & Leat are unquestionably the 2 best keepers. Both were injured for these games. Though seems Leat hasn't been making herself much available full stop of late. She's pretty good with her feet, so that would help with Ferns trying to play out from the back. But seems Esson is edging her at the moment.

If Alfeld was fit & playing for the Nix, she could be pushing Nayler for the 3rd spot. How odd is it to have 3 of your top 4 keepers all injured.

Hannah Blake, Tayla O'Brien and Deven Jackson i feel are all technically good attacking players who deserved a proper crack. They'd make more of an impact than the headless chickens that are Rennie, Satchell and Collins. All three have an eye for goal, can make a pass, have decent ball control and don't run round willy nilly unlike the latter mentioned. Blake now at Perth but the two suburbs girls are without pro contracts so is that their stumbling blocks? Surely you don't need a pro contract to be deemed good enough to be given a chance especially when the 'tried and trusted' is clearly not working.

No harm in giving it a go is there. It's not like we'd be missing out on goals by not having the regulars there, they can't bloody score anyway. If it turns out this other lot are shark its really no change.

Honestly we should just play pot 4 teams in the April friendlies, just to confirm that we CAN beat them without any trouble.

Out of curiosity those Pot 4 teams are (with FIFA ranking according to Wiki).
Yes Portugal are a Pot 4 team (if they beat Cameroon)!

Nigeria (45)
Philippines (53)
South Africa (54)
Morocco (76)
Zambia (81)

Then the 3 winners of
Chile vs Haiti
Portugal vs Cameroon
Paraguay vs Panama

China (Pot 2, ranked 15th) and Vietnam (Pot 3, ranked 34th) - could be good teams to bring to NZ in April, with an eye to the must win pool game against fellow AFC team Philippines. Or if the Ferns like the Matildas plan to play April warmups in Europe. Take your pick of tough opponents up there.

Satchell Im afraid looks to be offering nothing. She turns the ball over just about every time. Shes been a bit like that for the Phoenix lately too.

Rennie. Well Ive only ever seen her play for the Ferns. She must be better than she looks.

We can't expect better from the players....we can't complain about what they produce - they are consistently poor because........they are poor.

The issue should be with the staff - at least organise us in and out of position in some form of shape - more so without the ball. Give us an idea of what we can look at.

Our best hope is frustrating teams defensively and getting lucky with an attacking set piece- i know that's rubbish football but that's all we've got.

A goal from open play? what's that payin? 17s?
A clean sheet? 21s?

Satchell was showing good improvement when at Sydney FC under an established coach in Ante Juric. Has gone back to old habits since leaving Sydney.
Rennie was top goal scorer in the National league a few years back, but has struggled at international level. So no guarantee Jackson or O'Brien can make the step up. But I'm starting to wonder if the US college pathway that Rennie is on, is not helping her development.

College football would have to be a weaker level day in day out, than say the ALW that Clegg plays in. Can see Clegg & Jacqui Hand (hopefully fit) coming in for Rennie & Ava Collins for the April friendlies. Hannah Blake also mentioned by someone.

Every level Clegg has gone up - U17s to U20s to ALW - she has scored goals. International football a big big jump from the ALW, but she is a genuine goal scorer, with great shot placement.

Actually agree with alot of what SN says above. Presumably 4 at the back stays. What else can Klimkova show us re an obvious structure/plan to win, even winning ugly.

I personally don't think she has the ability to coach....doesn't matter what change she wants to make - haven't seen anything on or off the pitch that suggest she can coach. She's only saying things need to change because the heats coming on....to appease the media.

People saying Clegg is the saviour? not sure a 17 year old is the quick fix. Could be unfair pressure. Doesn't matter who you play, the team and it's environment is a complete shambles.

3 wins in 22 games
conceeded 40 plus goals
scored 10...(6 in last 16 games)
no high performance culture
no identity on pitch

6 year deal.

farce.
