Excellence United.  You'll be able to show us around .  Know of any good place to get a tailored suit from? 2ndBest2010-04-05 21:30:58

not really, but I can ask around for you, came here when I was 12yo, so didn't need a suit so never knew where to get them, shouldn't be that hard, HK isn't exactly that big and there's heaps of shops everywhere :)

If you fancy getting a tailored suit, I recommend getting one in Hong Kong. Very good value, and a lot of competition.

There might not be time for them to make it and have it delivered to you on the way over.
They could take your measurements and finish it while you're away though (maybe send a white one to the hotel in SA, or else you could pick up the finished suit in HK on the way back from SA.

Can pass on the name of the tailor I used if anyone's interested.

Also, as far as I know the electronics market is at Mong Kok.
I bought quite a few computer parts there on my trip in 2006.

Travelex (cash passport) don't do Rand cards. I tried. Am going to get a Travelcard but it will just be at exchange rates at time of use.

www.Loadedcard.co.nz for prepaid credit cards.

Kiwibank don't do those cards either for SA.

Talked to a SA contact of mine who has worked as a travel agent in SA.  Here are a few money pointers:
1) Strongly suggested to carry as little cash as possible.  "you will be robbed" were her words.
2) Don't wear a backpack. and only put things in your pockets that have zips.  Otherwise you are asking for trouble.
3) She suggested using your credit card and bank card as much as possible.  Although there are hefty charges related to that.

that's exactly what my SA friends said to me from all of the above

I'll carry some cash with me for food only and the rest can be taken care of with my credit card

I don't think I have pockets with zips?

How would a person carrying $1000 be distinguishable from a person carrying $10 to these robbers that SA is apparently teeming with?

Or does everyone just get robbed as a matter of course?

Is anyone else not bothering getting all the shots they are recommending?  It just seems a bit over the top to me as we are only going to J'berg (it would be a different story if going to north africa).

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

hey guys

just picked up a new magazine at a local New World called Football +, it's a souvenir edition on the WC, $9.95, you get a wallchart too, pretty good bargain, a preview of all the teams and some really good features and articles, I don't usually buy magazines and I bought one, will be good to read just before tournament starts :)

matter of course I assume.  Its likely to happen, so better to lose $10 than $1000.

Won't you be using the Newstalk ZB credit card anyway?

Well I wasn't going to until today.

Was fully prepared just to get the malaria tablets - and even then that was only because of the games near Kruger. I was at the docs today and  mentioned about the malaria tablets and he asked where i was going .....he says "oh you will need more than that"
Tetanus
Hep A
Hep B
Typhoid
& Flu

I told him I'd go away and think about it.

He said I was playing russian roulette if i didnt have them.
I asked if i could have a general anaesthetic  and then he give them to me.....
sigh....

I got the works (I'm now officially Yellow Fever Certified - I asked if my Fever Card would get me into Tanzania but apparently no chance, even though it's only three years old) but I'm going to some dodgier places.  Hep-A/Typhoid, Polio, Tetanus/Diptheria, and YF; 4 shots in all.

Nelspruit and Polokwane are not in Malaria zone so you lot don't really need anti-malaria drugs, but you'd want to consider the shots.  I'd mainly go for Hep-A if I had to choose one - that seriously puts you out of action, for half a year.

I'm taking plenty of cash, screw paying $7.50 Card Txn fee every time you buy a meal.  Just leave what you don't need in the Hotel or in a money belt, and have piss-all in your wallet.  I'm taking two credit cards though, to have a back-up one (also to be left in hotel/money belt).

Remember that there will be a lot of stupid tourists out there, so as long as you don't look/act like one you won't be as likely to be hit - and the normal advice about SA don't quite apply during the WC (can't say I buy much into this 'you will get robbed').  We just about booked into a hosel in the middle of Soweto for four nights, doubt they exist outside of the WC!  Decided against it though, might be tough getting a taxi back there at night

Yeah, I just went in and saw my GP and then the nurse did it straight away.
EDIT: No pre-arranging needed - I didn't tell him that was why I was coming and they seemed to have everything on-hand to do it.liverpoolfan12010-04-13 11:23:26

Admit I have not been to SA for a number of years, but I think all the shots that have been proprosed is a lot of crap.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Because someone he knew went to SA a decade ago and didn't come down with hep-A, typhoid, malaria, diptheria, polio OR tetanus

Because as of now it is not a third world country. Apart from the crime.

Doctor's advice > someone who hasn't been there for 10 years.

my doctor recommended that I have at look at this site...

http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/south-africa.aspx

It mentions all the diseases I listed yesterday but focuses mainly on Malaria. With the others it basically describes them as "routine diseases" ie diseases you would consider getting even if you were staying at home. eg Tetanus, flu etc.... Hep B is a standard school vac these days, many people already get flu vacs routinely and of course we are advised to  have a tetanus every 10 years.

the site is worth a read if you haven't yet got vacs. I have to say I am considering not bothering with the vaccines.

From what I've heard, having malaria is more comfortable taking malaria tablets. The side effects are that bad.

Mind, I've never had either.

I backpacked round India for 3 months many years ago, and apparently we got a few shots then - I imagine everything you are recommended to get for SA and then some.  I guess that some of these would last for life (although some wouldn't), so that only leaves the bad aids I have to look out for.  As long as I stay clear of cruising the back alleys of red light districts with Greene and Smithy and pad up during any gay sex shenanigans, I should be ok.

I'd check it against some of the sites posted earlier on this thread. Some shots last for 3 years, others for 5 or 10.

I lived in SA for almost 15 years and never got hep/typhoid or tetanus shots, only got these when i went backpacking around SE Asia.

Malaria may even not be a big risk as it is winter, only areas of concern for Malaria will be travelling in the far north of the country, so games in Polokwane and could possibly include Nelspruit and then as I said it is winter so risk is reduced.

Funny how some people take the piss, but good to see that some people have been there done that. Malaria is always a problem in Africa, except that on the highfelt this is the winter and there will be no malaria at 5000ft above sea level.
So to all those smart arses, I have also lived in Africa for 18 years, 3 in South Africa so i think I know a bit more than you.
