After the Chileans had sung their anthem so well I said out loud "whats the chances of any of us knowing the words to ours?". Bloke next to me , in an Everton beanie, then sung them in Maori. Big up to him!

the last line of the chat was "we love chile" in english.  So i assume the first two lines were something like "we love, we love" in spanish

Define 'play'

Oh, and it's:

Chi, Chi, Chi
Le, le, le
Viva Chile...

First heard it in 1998 at an AW's vs Chile match at Mt. Smart, and on about 5 occassions since.

im surprised no ones commented on the performance of the referee. i thought he ruined the game, at no point did he have any control of the opposing team. and ian hogg goes in toe feet studs up chops the player in any other game that wouldve been a red. what planet was the ref on - did any one else feel this was a stop start affair of a bore or were we just happy with another 12 player nz win?

Honestly bbt, take some Prozac.  You make HappyTed seem like a paragon of postivity and joy.

Have you ever found the positive in anything at all ?

I don't know... I haven't really seen him play before but apart from being the size of a lock...
Should he really be there?

Messam:
He does seem to score goals wherever he plays which I guess is what you ask for...

Ref:
I don't think the players made life easy for him though.

Does he? Oh well if he does... He does.
He just looked kind of super slow, sluggish and not incredibly skilled...

he dose not defend from the front which pisses me off up most

Chile were so much more physical than I was expecting...
I thought they played a good game (dirtiness aside) and probably deserved the win.

I don't think he's slow, I just suspect he is like Jacob Oram, his strides are so big he takes fewer steps.

A couple of times I was impressed with his pace when you saw him running next to a player.  Without anyone to compare him to he does look slower.

Yeah maybe it's just that gigantism pace illusion.

there's no way messam is fast. medium pace at best, and maybe at top end. his acceleration was embarrassingly bad. this was the first id seen the u23's play and he looked like he was playing his first game of football. i cannot believe there isnt anyone better. im astounded even.

Oh good. I thought he was less than average too.
What is he? A right forward? an attacking mid fielder?

that's a damn shame then that politics let this big moose lope around the field in the NZ jersey.

Could Barbarouses not have played in his position?

Costa is a different type of player, also I'd be surprised if politics had anything to do with the decision.

Messam played for NZ A last year as well so those whose jobs ride on the selection decision obviously rate him.

what sort of a player is messam suppossed to be? couldnt work out what he achieved (if anything) on fri night. made one decent run which was the result of him booting the ball into the opposite defender and having the bounce go his way.

He takes up half the penalty area, if you kick the ball at him it deflects off him and in to the goal ?

More Messam hating... Im down.

But he actually is fast (sorry Rod). Although is absolutley hopeless. A quote from one of his fellow U23 team mates (remaining un-named obviously): "If Stu picks Messam Im going to punch him (Stu) in the face."

Dont think this chap followed through with the threat, but shows you what players that train with Messam everyday think of him.

i agree, i've seen him on the park

i suppose i regard whales as being fairly large

anyway the Japanese threat aside, i think Stu J will have a specific role for him and if he carries it out then he'll be contributing

Sure can.

It's a clash between two of the Olympic Men's Football Tournament contenders, and is part of a unique double-header which also features the Matildas and the Football Ferns.

The girls kick off at 2pm NZ time on Saturday at North Sydney Oval, while the boys follow at 4pm.

Following these matches, the girls head to China for two games (July 16 & 20) against the host nation in Qinhuangdao, one of the venues the Football Ferns will be playing at during the Olympics.

From there the Football Ferns head to Singapore for internationals against the host nation (July 23) and Canada (July 25), before going to the Olympics. Their first match, against Japan, is on August 6 in Qinhuangdao.

The boys remain in Sydney for a couple of days after Saturday's match, and play Central Coast Mariners at Wahroonga from 5pm NZ time on July 15.

From there, the OlyWhites head to Jakarta for three matches, against PSMS Medan (July 20), Indonesia (July 23) and Persija (July 26). Thence it's off to the Olympics, with the first match against China in Shenyang on August 7.

Keep an eye on www.sportswebsoccer.com for full match reports on both internationals this weekend.

Cheers,
