IF
Italy beat Paraguay
We draw with Slovakia
We draw with Italy
Slovakia draw with Paraguay
THEN
Going into last match v paraguay, we would probably only need a draw to go through.
Final Standings
Italy 7
New Zealand 3
Paraguay 2
Slovakia 2

Jo Berg rated one of the most dangerous cities in the world. I work with about 30 South Africans and their news is not good.

Great draw for us really with at leats one result possible. i wonder what the TAB are offering for us to get through the qualifying??

Poor Aussie, I hope they do the job though. they are capable.

As for the french, it proves cheating does help. The softest draw of the lot.

Well something for us to look forward to anyway troops. Let the games begin....
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

If the ref had seen it, Thierry would have got a yellow, we'd have all laughed and called him cheeky, and then all would be forgotten.

The way to the second round.
Italy beat everyone. All the other games are draws.
Points are: Italy 9 the rest 2. Best loser v Italy is through.
Another 4-3 loss v Italy should be good enough.

New Zealand: The group's whipping boys are expected to finish this group as they finished their last one in 1982, without a point. The team is made up mostly of part-timers with only Blackburn's Ryan Nelsen as a leading light. They cruised through qualifying in the Oceania region and then beat Bahrain in the play-off, but they won't make an impact in this group.

Prediction: Bottom of the group. No points and maybe even no goals either. Sorry.

Absolute joke of an article. People need to do more research on us but to be honest it doesn't matter as it will make our upsets all the more better.

Uhh..pretty hard to disagree with any of that except maybe the 'part-timers' thing (though the A-League is pretty much part-time compared to the top leagues)

I think people are underating Paraguay. They are a terrific team - better than Argentina right now - and I can't see us winning or drawing with them. However, with a bit of luck I do think we can beat Slovakia (though it wont be easy obviously) and perhaps draw with Italy because they usually start tournaments slow.

As for the draw. For us, it's OK. Not great, but could have been much worse. But could have been better too. From the seeds, once South Africa was off the table, Italy's pretty good. It's team in somewhat of a decline, and certainly better to be playing them than Spain/Brazil/Germany etc. Having said that, they'll still probably beat us comfortably.

Lot of people here are underestimating Paraguay. They're an excellent side, seen them play Brazil in the qualifying, they were absolutely fantastic. Will give us a torrid time.

Slovakia's a good draw for us, they're nothing special, we can play against them. Best chance of point/s for us.

As for other groups, England got the easiest group, Australia had really tough luck. Expect they'll be joining us on the trip home after the group stage is complete.

Terrible luck for Ivory Coast, this is the second time they've been drawn in the group of death in as many tournaments. But I think they're still good enough to progress from that group. Spain's group will be interesting to follow, there'll be an almighty scramble for the second spot there.

Not according to Coen Lammers.
But for me they are one of the easier of the unseeded European teams.

Better them than the 1 in 3 chance we had at portugal when our group came round!

I've seen quite a bit of Slovakia, there's nothing to be scared of there. Agree they're probably one of the easiest (if not THE easiest) European side to draw.

I was sure we were gonna draw them as the European teams came out. Heart skipped a few beats as that Frog unravelled the scrunched up paper that determined who would be the 4th team in our group that's for sure.

Three for me, and two for them.

Paraguay are a very good team...I think they qualified second in sth America and beat Brazil on the way. We seem to struggle against Sth American teams....it will be a tough day at the office against them. They are technically very very good, they are very quick and are well organised. plus doesn't roque Santa-Cruse play for them?

Shame we are not playing Italy last...if they won their first two games and were through they might of rested some of their stars. We could keep close to them if we defend hard. italy tend to cruise when they go a couple of goals up. Paraguay could rip us up.

Slovakia won their qualifying pool against not great teams like Slovenia and Poland. They are no slouches. Well organised but they will be our best chance of a point.

if I was forcasting results i would think...vs Italy 0-3, vs paraguay 0-4, vs Slovakia 1-2. Sure hope we can do better than that but I am not confident.

Pretty happy with our draw, could have been better but could have been worse. Like if we'd been in Brazils group with Portugal and Ivory Coast. Speaking of which, that and Australias pool will be interesting.

Yeah and she didnt seem to understand what was going on with the draw  she seemed very unsure at several times and even asked Beckham "are you sure its the right one?" (why was Beckham even up there anyways...several SA stars etc then....Beckham...didnt quite fit).

The only thing about Paraguay which might give us a little bit of hope is that they usually play a bit of negative football (not unlike how we will probably try and play at the WC) which could give us a chance at a 0-0 valeo2009-12-05 17:08:09
