Wow, I thought the point of these games was to cash in (fair enough too), not just break even.

Actually, an Auckland match would only attract up to ~19K people. Christchurch would attract up to ~40K. I'm not saying it'd sell out if it were held down there, but surely Christchurch would get more than 19K given these circumstances. Greater demand doesn't make up for inadequate supply. For that, Auckland would have to be rated the 3rd option, given Hamilton's expansion capacity with all the regional benefits Auckland has

40K? You're dreaming, mate. I'd be surprised if Wellington could even pull that for Honduras.

[QUOTE=NHpeter]I guess that is a point if people buy tickets to the embankment then they are told it is to wet to sit there.

Surely that can't happen.

Footpaul??

I didn't write the article - I don't work for the Herald yet!

As for the embankments, if they can't have people on them if they're wet, they surely can't sell those 6000 tickets until game day. Considering New Zealand Football need to sell somewhere close to 19,000 tickets to break even, North Harbour Stadium cannot be an option, as much as some of us, myself included, would like an Auckland game. If Eden Park is also a no go (is it?), I'm going for Hamilton (although I'd consider flying down if Christchurch get it).

Did I read somewhere that the venue would be announced tomorrow? Does that sound right with anyone?

Aren't there FIFA regulations about people sitting on grass? Thought it wasn't allowed for international matches.

I understand that FIFA will not allow any use of embankments grass or concrete, that's why NZF is wanting temporary seating put up at NH Stadium. If NHS can get 25,000+ people seated then it will be at NHS. More money in it for NZF to play the game in Christchurch would expect 30,000 at AMI.

AMI stadium has a capacity of 36,000 going to 38,600 for the RWC.

Oh I see... Your use of "would attract" made it read as though you believe there would be 40K at a ChCh game, but I see what you mean.

If this is the case, it further underlines the absurdities of Auckland's stadiums debacle. Over a fifth of seating at North Harbour Stadium, New Zealand's so called home of football, cannot be used under FIFA regulation. Awesome.

I'm going to sneak into Albany Placemakers at night, steal some wood, and finally complete North Harbour Stadium myself. Anyone else in?

Hence the "up to", but indeed perhaps "could" would have been more appropriate than "would". But yeah, I'd be pleasantly surprised were it a 40K sellout!

Home games should break even, and away games would be expected to return a profit, but NZ Football wants what is best for football.

"Money is no longer so critical that if we lose money, we go broke, but no organisation wants to lose money," he said.

A hint that its NHS perhaps??

Why settle for breaking even at NHS when you would almost certainly make money at AMI?

To be honest, money for NZF is money for New Zealand FOOTBALL.

I'll say it right now. If the situation was reversed (AMI capacity 19,000, NH capacity 30,000+) I would not be pushing for AMI (and in fact I would be disappointed in a way if they decided to go for AMI).

Sure I'm biased so can be accused of just saying it but not meaning it, but I do genuinely stand by those statements.

I've never pushed for the game to be in Dunedin for example. Carisbrook suggestion was obvious a joke.

Hey guys Air New Zealand have a deal going to Wellington from any city for quite cheap on the exact dates of the game. Think the deal ends midnight, but for example Nelson to Welly is $59

Saw that but for Dunedin it's only like $5 off. In fact most centres are only $5 off lol.

Still worth pointing out though!

I was hoping they would have confirmed the Hon game by tonight so I could have booked to go to Auckland *shudder*

You can do it mate.

Should be announced tomorrow. Then we can start celebrating that it is in Auckland.

For me it's like $11 cheaper each way than the already cheap flights, so worth buying.

Yah, sellout 19,000, NZF breaks even, fans miss out on going to the game

I'm not a hater. Why would I wish the All Whites anything less than success?

And where is the Auckland confirmation?

If it is at NHS then they will have temporary seating put in. Meaning about 25,000 people will get to go.

To me that is a decent crowd and NZF makes money. People also won't miss out on the game :)

Is NZF rich after the World Cup or something? How much did they get from FIFA for the World Cup?

Was it so much that any money made from these games will be insignificant?

I don't have all the figures but IIRC 19,000 tickets sold for the HON match would "break even".

IMO having the game at either AMI or Auckland I would expect a crowd of 30,000 or more. Maybe I'm optimistic but I would be disappointed if either city drew less than that for this fixture.

Let's say for arguments sake that a game in either city would draw a crowd of 29,000.

That's 10,000 more than the break even point:

At an average of $30 per seat (some family tickets and child tickets come into play), that would be $300,000 potential profit.

At an average of $40 per seat that would be $400,000.

Is $300-400,000 insignificant as far as NZF's current financial standing? I'm not sure how much $300,000 is in the grand scheme of things.

I don't hate Auckland, nor do I hate Aucklanders. But the thought of getting from accommodation to a major sports ground and home again late at night scares the bejeezus out of me. Christchurch isn't much better but I've heard that it's walkable from central accommodation (I would have a car). Wellington is just incredible for obvious reasons. Dunedin's stadium will be a stroll from the city too.

It would actually only be 4,000 more. I don't believe that NZF will have the game without those temporary seating.

But yes I agree it would be more significant to have the game at AMI because they can hold more people.

But I still want it to be in Auckland. ( might be a bit selfish ) but I can't afford to go to Wellington or Christchurch for any of the games if they are there.

Where would you stay? I am sure you could find some where on the shore to stay. Or if you were staying in the city you would just take a bus to albany bus station. Which is like a 500m walk to the stadium.

Maybe it's just easier for me as I live here, but that doesn't sound to scary or hard.

See while I have selfish reasons for Christchurch, IMO Christchurch is much better for the bigger picture. If it goes to NH so be it and wishing every success, but I still strongly believe it would be the wrong decision in the grand scheme of things.

Why has the temp seating never been mentioned before? And surely there would be an associated cost.

I'm not suggesting that $300,000 IS a lot of money for NZF - can someone confirm if it is significant or just a drop in the water when it comes to the organisation? It may actually be small change.

Edit: AM I dreaming or is my hope of a 35,000+ crowd at AMI actually achievable? I can't see why not??

If the game is in Albany, you can stay at mine (or actually my parents - they won't mind. Perhaps I should ask first!). Considering the hospitality and generousity I've recieved from Wellingtonians when down there, it would be rude not to play host should there be a game up here. Aucklanders on here should each host any South Islanders keen to come out should Christchurch miss out. Or vice versa!

To be honest if the game is at Auckland, I could probably only justify going to one game (even that's a stretch). And if it was one game, my preference would strongly be Wellington. That said, the prospect on Honduras is slightly more appetizing for some reason (probably because we have never played them).

Larissa Riquelme would definitely be a Wellington drawcard though.
