On the plus side, at least the suspensions will force changes in the All Whites squad ... hopefully someone will give the young players a chance.

Roux in for Bertos. Rojas in for Kosta. Fallon/Smeltz in for Wood. Sigmund in for Vicelic. James in for Christie (hopefully). Not gonna see a whole bunch of young players in the side.

Subs: Howieson, Spoonley, Henderson, Keat, Smeltz

We'd lose 12-4

Sure, but we'd have something to work with.

Mexico are better than Jamaica, as shown in the Hex.

Not disputing that, disputing we're incapable of stringing passes together to good effect - if encouraged.

The point your making is the lack of positive intent.

Apart from Siggy for Christie that was the best side we had available.  Instead of scapegoating some people need to accept that we just don't have 11 players good enough.

No it wasn't. Are you telling me Lochhead and Bertos are better picks than Tuiloma or Roux? Vicelich over Keat?

Vicelich is better than Keat. Tuiloma has not played a top-level game in his life, Roux has a handful of A-league games. They are the future, but in this type of situation most managers in the world would stick with guys who have experience and who have been there, done that.

Christie is a different story, but a fairly minor one in the big scheme of things.

Tuiloma's debut should have been ages ago, Roux also. Ricki and his scouts haven't been doing a good enough job. Vicelich might have been better than Keat in 2010, but surely not now.

Before they even played for the U20s?

He's playing Scandinavian 2nd division.  That's barely ASB Prem level football.  If his football was better than Ivan he wouldn't be playing at that level.

Regardless of team selection, coaching issues and whatever else this team had no belief. I'm not sure I buy that Nelsen totally ran the show in 2010, but he did instil a huge sense of belief in the team. I remember when he signed for Blackburn and he was asked if he thought he was good enough to play in the EPL. Expecting the usual Kiwi "one game at a time, dunno mate" crap, the journo nearly choked when he replied "Yes".

I'm not saying belief is the only answer but it's one factor which will help. As we've seen recently with our age group teams, mis-placed belief in your ability is a big hindrance.

I'm over banging on about today - we sucked and we knew we would. The future does look bright, and we need to put everything in place so the potential can be fulfilled. A High Performance division of NZF needs to be set up - you can't have the same people running WOF for kids also trying to run the AWs.

Rio 2016 is our next opportunity and I'm sure we can build a team for 2018 based on that, and therefore get them playing in the next 12 months. Tuiloma, Thomas, Howieson, Payne, Rufer are some names which spring to mind as being eligible - keep the (relatively) older guys as well obviously, - Wood, Rojas, Smith, Reid, McGlinchey - and it starts to look a whole lot better than Butler, Christie, Lochhead, and their mates.

Ricki deserves a decent farewell next week for what he has done, and just like the Nix, time to move on.

"Ages" is probably a stretch, but Tulioma looked a seriously class act with the under 17s. Just saying when your options are Bertos and Lochhead you need to look elsewhere and, as has been rightly pointed out, our top-level player base is very thin.
Also, News, I know where Keat is playing, but he is still a better bet now than a 37 YO Vicelich.

He said it was mistakes that cost us, which I don't disagree with. We held out well for 30 minutes until Mossy came for a ball that Dura had covered, and then we left a guy unmarked at a corner. 0-0 at the half would have been a completely different story.

But now he knows that he has to chase the game, why on earth would he play the same tactics? Sitting back and defending for a 0-0 isn't going to work this time, and Ricki knows that.

I've paid bucks to go to Welly and watch a football match. I'm not being delusional, I'm merely hopeful of seeing us play beyond the back third of the pitch. With more than one striker.

Needs to be 4-0. Away goals only count double if the result is a tie after 180 mins (for the purposes of countback)

Actually (he said, trying to sound as self-righteous as possible) it's a myth that away goals count double. They don't. If the score is level on aggregate then the team that scored the most goals away from home goes through.
