Would like to see Tuiloma for Bertos - has demonstrated ability to play as winger/wingback both locally, at NZ agegroup level and in Marseille, would add pace, a very good long throw and extra threat in the air to the squad.

And I don't buy into the 'unproven' argument. Has proven himself at agegroup WC level, plays week-in with the OM U19 squad - including in the UEFA Youth League (Youth equivalent of Champions League) against top U19 players from clubs such as Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, has also played for OM's Reserve Team and has recently started training with the OM First Team. You can't tell me that doesn't make him a better choice in the squad than an unattached player.

So basically, someone who's only played with kids, and never against good quality international players?

I think Ricki will field much the same team and its quite likely he will play Christie again....just to be bloody minded. He has said that the selection wasn't the problem for the first match so if he drops Christie then it will be an admission that he got it wrong first leg. If that Radio report is right then Herbert won't play youth...he will only make changes enforced by the Yellow suspension.....so expect Siggy for Ivan, Rory for Wood and most probably Roux for Bertos. I think these will be the only changes. In Rickis world he thinks it was the players execution not his tactics or selections that cost us the first leg.

There will be some very grumpy customers at the ROF if Christie gets a start.

It's a pretty "meh" Mexican side overall, so wouldn't be shocked to see the AWs get a decent result in Wellington.

surely anyone who is making their senior debut at any level has only played against kids and never against good quality players of that level? This kid may not be better than the other options in the squad, but if you want to build for the future you have to give people their debut at some stage.  Meaningless games like this seem to be a good place to start.

You know Austin when I got up this morning, I would not have believed this above but having heard Ricki in the press today, I think you are bang on. He is going to wave two fingers in the air to everyone and do what he has always done. I have to say, if he thinks thats the right way to go about it in a 4-0 must win game that we will not win, then he really does need to go and mail his resignation in before the game kicks off.

Excellent post Big Pete. The article says 5000 people watched the All Whites that night. It was a long time ago, but I recall a lot less people than that. The one thing I do remember clearly though, is the positivity and energy the team played with, they really took it the Mexicans. The same thing is needed on Wednesday. Being at sea-level should help.

Apologies if I missed the irony but really? What has changed since Thursday morning to make you think we can replicate a fluke result from 32 years ago?

Well, apart from a dream I had last night where the players locked Ricki in a cupboard over the weekend and wouldn't let him out (except for short stretches in a straight jacket to let him breathe) and Ryan Nelsen coached them over the phone from Toronto -
....what has changed is Mexico probably don't travel well - in fact they very, very rarely play outside of CONCACAF and when they do, they don't win many - last year they won three competitve matches away from home (all in CONCACAF & two of those were v Guyana and El Salvador); this year they've won only two competitive matches away from home (v Jamaica & v Japan, their sole win in the Confeds Cup).
Of course not that Mexico will be so bad we'll win 4-0, but who knows, maybe it's possible to get a 2-1 or 2-0....
But, please Ricki, no Jeremy Christie and give Roux, Tuiloma and Henderson a run, Rojas and Smeltz more time and start James...

I already take day off that day, watch the game at Hong Kong 2pm on the internet. I won't give it up since, I believe we can still beat them. My team:

Moss

Durante Sigmund Smith

Rojas James McGlinchy Barbarouses

Brockie Fallon Smeltz

4:1 the final and we will win penalty shoot out!

Norwich City supporter since 1992, New Zealand supporter since 2010 but without Rory Fallon's winning goal against Bahrain, I won't know about New Zealand Football.

There won't be a penalty shoot out (or extra time for that matter) if the score is 4-1.

Having had a couple of days to ruminate on the defeat I guess the thing I'm most disappointed about is that we aren't going into this game with any realistic hope at all.  Even if it had been 4-1 you might have felt we had an unlikely chance, but it's all just a bit grim really

Mexico doesn't play outside of CONCACAF that much cuz the FMF makes lots of money playing in the US, even if against rubbish teams most the time (we have played NZ two times for the same reason), while they're mostly boring games, they have helped financing our youth teams and women sides, so I can't complain much.
Now, Mexico don't travel well in CONCACAF, cuz there's a huge hostility in the area, especially in Central America. When we have played outside of Concacaf we have done ok most the times (most of the past Copas America, except the last one where we had a U-22 team and the Confed, but it was a team in crisis).

Agree totally. Herbert's 'all about me' post-match ravings and lash at the critics will make him even more bloody minded. He will make the forced changes you mention above, and that will be it. He's in chronic space right now, and will just stick his 2 fingers in the air with his selection. I expect Mexico to beat Herbert's starting lineup on Wednesday. They will sit back a bit early to make sure we're out of the tie, then pick us off on the counter.

If, for arguments sake, we accept Rickis claim that player selection was the best he could do for the first leg that still doesn't mean that the same selection would be the best he could do for this game because the first leg was about damage control but this one we need to score at least 4. So you could theoretically say that the selection in the first leg was perfect and still change it significantly because the team has to do something completely different. But I still don't think Mr Herbert will see it that way. I'm just desperately searching for straws to clutch at.

Not saying they'll sit on their 4 goal lead. Obviously they'll be keen to pick us off early if they can.

Meh. The argument originally was to put a kid who'd never played senior football above Northern Premier level to play in a crucial WC qualifier in foreign conditions, with guys he'd hardly ever met before let alone played much football with, against quality players the likes of which he'd only seen on TV before.

Pleased for Fenton that he has got a call up. But to cover what positions? Surely Ricki won't consider him for RB. We have plenty of wide attackers so he won't get a run there. Does Ricki know that Fenton has had a month out injured...has only played two part games on return and was absolute pants at RB last week. Potentially a good player but some way off international quality IMO

Because it's just a clear anti-Fenton trolling post and yet you have nothing constructive to offer in Fenton's place. This is a player who is 20, is still very much scaling the glacial learning curve of playing his international football in a possibly unhappy and lacking in confidence AW's. As well as playing his professional football in a club that well and truly had the stuffing knocked out of them last season. Both teams are either in or heading to a period of  change.

Fenton has knocked them in at U-20. When he debuted with the Nix he played some very handy football. Therefore if he is in the squad then I say well done and all the best.

Do I know if he will turn out to be a good player? Nope, but unlike Christie and Ivan who have had their careers  I am happy to give a young professional footballer a go in this instance and not stick the boot in.
