Who was standing beside Christie for the whole of the first match.....are you saying that Christie was our only DM in the match and Mac was AM?

Also who replaced Brown when he was injured for the second playoff against Bahrain?   McClinchey....where did he play?  DM

I think if you look and there are two blokes standing side by side in front of the CB's that they are generally called DM's and  McClinchey has been there quite often for the AW's

Yeah it should be a 4-2-3-1 or 5-3-2 at worst. Need 3 in CM. McGlinchey as most attacking. It's a pity Vicelich is out as he and James could do a great job as the 2.
Who's the other CMs we have?

Kosta, Marco and Smeltz as two wide players and up top. Brocks and Fallon to replace.

If we went with the two up top what about Marco and Smeltz, with McGlinchey just in behind? Midfielders job to hit McGlinchey as outlet with Marco drifting wide and Smeltz central. I like playing slightly lopsided, overload one side, maybe right with Roux there.

I know there's no chance of either (sounds like the XI is sorted) but interesting to throw some alternatives out there.

He's effectively retired considering he's not going to leave Wellington to find a game somewhere.  It's the right call

I still struggle to understand how Brockie gets in this side.  What role is he actually going to play?  I like the personnel more but I'm still not sure about our midfield 2 against their 3.

Don't get me wrong, I agree its the right call but lets not say he has been dropped because he was shit in the away leg or because he has no club. He has been dropped (or to use your word 'retired') for a player of the future. Its absolutely the right call.

Brockie gets into this side because of his age and at 26, he has a cycle in him. Killen, Fallon and Smeltz are effectively done. In the 4-4-2 with Wood being suspended, the other striker is Brockie. I'm not sure what other strikers are there when you 'retire' those 3. I'm trying to think of the next lot of names up front actually.

You are effectively playing Marco and Kosta as attacking halves/wingers who will provide the delivery for the front two if it does not come from McGlinchy/James

I don't think Brockie is up to international level (and I think he's had plenty of opportunities) - plus I think we're likely to be overrun in midfield with two out and out strikers.  This is where I'd love to have had Keat in the squad so we could finally, for once, try out a 3 man central midfield with McGlinchey able to play a bit further forward and link up with Marco.

It's funny, we move out of the 80's with Ricki's long-ball 3-4-3 into the 90's with his flat 4-4-2!!

We usually head up to the BackBencher pub before a home match, I reckon anytime from 15:30 onwards. We are usually out the back rather than the main seating area - But for this match I reckon the entire pub will be filled by supporters.

Post match it's usually The Four Kings for Wellingtonites. Some of us out of towners pop back to the BackBencher for a pint.

Paul Raymond (15 November 1925 – 2 March 2008) was an English publisher, club owner, and real estate developer.[1]

After opening the UK's first strip club, Raymond became very wealthy, buying property on a scale that got him dubbed "King of Soho"[ and launching Paul Raymond Publications with the soft-porn magazine Men Only, soon followed by EscortClub InternationalMayfair and many other best-selling titles. He was starting to hand over control to his daughter Debbie when she died of an overdose in 1992, after which he became a recluse.

Raymond opened the Raymond Revuebar strip club as a private club to circumvent the Lord Chamberlain's powers, in Soho in 1958, which was at the time the first British strip club. Within two years, 45,000 members had signed up.

... Raymond had regular clashes with the authorities for over a decade. In 1961, Raymond was fined £5,000 following a magistrate's decision that permitting members to ring the Ding Dong Girl's bells constituted running an "unruly house". The JP also objected to a performer swallowing a snake in public and described the venue as “filthy, disgusting and beastly”.

Steve Coogan in "The Look of Love." He had a few clubs....

Agree with what you are saying JD but you gotta dance with who you came with. Our other CM options in this squad are Butler and Christie and I don't really think they would bring much more than an extra body between the Mexicans and the goal in this game. With Smeltz coming off such a long injury layoff I think giving him a striking partner is a good move. Would have maybe played Fallon just because he seemed incredibly fired up for the first leg and he's got good memories of WC qualifiers at the stadium, but it might mean we resort to long ball too quickly. Brockie's never really played as an out and out striker for the AWs and that's where he's played his club football for the last year. He does have a knack of scoring freak goals at club level and that could be the sort of thing to rattle Mexico. Also 4-4-2  with quick young guys at FB  vs Mexico's wingbacks should allow us to overlap down the wings and stretch their central defence out of shape - which I bet will be Ricki's tactics.

With the personnel we've got available and the match situation I think this is the best lineup we could put out there. It might backfire horribly but it's worth the gamble at this stage. Wouldn't want to see it as a longterm approach though - 3 in the middle of the park is the best option for the future.

again, because we get continuously get pumped. When we are under pressure, do we tell Wood, Kosta and Brockie and McGlinchy to stay forward in their position or get back and help out?

If I could define it differently to illustrate my point, the first man at a crash site that starts helping is not necessarily a medic, but they do it anyway. Just like McGlinchy is not a DM, because of circumstances, everyone becomes a defender.

There is another option for CM. Play Tuiloma at DM (where he has been playing at OM) and play Lockhead at LB. Move McClinchey further up the park. We need 3 in midfield.....Mexico play 3 4 3. We will be continually outnumbered in midfield playing 442.

Brockie is a liability at this level...he adds very little. His movement and work rate are not enough to warrant a place at high international level. People chose him because he might score a wonder goal.....but he does not get the time and space he needs at this level to do that. Zero goals in 41 appearances.....what more do you need to say. He won't trouble Mexico at all. I am not a big Rory fan but he was effective coming off the bench in the first match. His knockdown led to our only goal and his height troubled the Mexicans.

Really looking forward to this match....our setup is very attacking so it should be a very open exciting game. As I said there are going to be lots of goals...Mexico 4-2

We are 4 in the hole. Stupidly attacking is the only option he has.

I like the lineup. Probably would have taken a risk and gone with Siggy ahead of Dura. Siggy wins more ball and if we are going to win by four goals (which is not likely) we need to disrupt them as much as possible. Just feel like Siggy is someone who can fire the rest of the team up. Plus Duras defense in the air and general marking has been wobbly recently.

good looking line up, and id almost say that this would be the baseline team ( plus or minus one or two) for the next coach to play.

he seems to have picked a team that is fairly mobile. which is different for ricki, but congrats to him.

When you do that it actually looks like a decent team (left back aside).
Its obviously not a team thats going to win the next world cup but as a young national team its pretty exciting imo.

Very true
If we can have one or two out of Payne, Keat, Ridenton, Rufer and Thomas to really push on in the next few years and give our midfield a boost in quality, plus find a magical left back somewhere, we'd be starting to look rather good
