I read in the newspapers that $uckland $ity have signed a new player he's called D.I.A

So $130,000 over 8 month for 8 players... er coaches. That's basically 2k a month to coach 60 hours. That's on top of their $300 "expenses" a week. $3200 a month tax free. Seems legit.......

After reading the Stuff story the thing that jumps out at me is that you can get paid with Trust money as an amateur then the next day get paid as a professional with prize money and then continue to get paid as an amateur.

Did I say that they should be like TW? Did I say they shouldn't develop kiwi's? No on both counts. I actually said I think the phoenix reserve team was a good thing for the league. My problem is that I felt the team they pit out on Saturday was a joke. Any decent youth team would have put a better display. I think it shows that they either have no regard for the league or simply have a very weak reserve team that without a few key players have no right being in the ASB premiership!

And the final comment about foreigners is just pathetic. At what point did I mention anything about foreigners? And how is losing 7 nil developing kiwi's? That result and performance by the phoenix reserves (although we all know they weren't) shows a total disregard for the league.

And if you want to bring up foreigners I noticed that the phoenix first team have a fair few but I guess that's not a problem for you as long as they play for a wellington team!

No rules broken but I do admit something probably should be done to give the 8 other teams a chance at similar funding.

The team wasn't that different from most the WeeNix have put out this season when there haven't been first teamers available, and they've done well enough to finish pretty comfortably ahead of the bottom three. Are Wanderers, Canterbury and Southern showing enough regard for the league?

Major credit to the weenix they have largely been good this season. A team largely full of teenagers did beat us at Kiwitea Street not that long ago.

Appreciate your comments.

I do accept no rules have been broken, but that really makes me question the rules. Are they strict enough? Paying players such a large amount of money to 'coach' when what you're really paying them to do is play seems ethically suspect.

I know it's such a widespread thing that happens in football (so I'm not just picking on ACFC here - just their scale is obviously larger) but that doesn't mean it's right.

I've always found it weird that Trillian are the shirt sponsors for ACFC. I just don't get who Trillian are advertising to there - gamblers? The people they're giving the trust money to?

Is there a reason why City don't have a separate shirt sponsor (which could get them even more money)?

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.

Its a very unfair system and I know that it is widely used amongst northern league clubs. I suppose if someone is actually coaching there is no limit to what they can be paid!

*Khouchaba.

So this time around the WeeNix were missing Brindell-South (broken), Doyle (first team), Gulley (unsure), Rufer (First team), Ridenton (broken), Stevens (First team).

A half from a clearly not 100% Appiah-Kubi and the rest of the squad under-20 including a number of 16 year-olds.

would a solution be that NZ football obtains the majority (if not all) of the trust sponsorship then divides it evenly (maybe plus some leftover for prize money) ? It would make it better than the current state, where one team has 26times another team and twice as much as the second most trust funded team.
Teams are obviously allowed to find sponsors for themselves, and well done if teams can find more; but trust funds / grants should be evenly spread..

No second ter use of the money from trusts. If NZF got the money they would have to employ the youth coaches in every ASB side.NZF can not redistribute the money to another party. (NZF already have a full roster of funded coaches) IMHO

Aussie radio show Stoppage Time Soccer says Auckland City are in conversation with a former Sydney FC player with the hope of him playing in the O-League campaign.

Rumoured to be midfielder Karol Kisel.

I don't think legislation allows for that type of arrangement. Funding gained in a particular area has to be given out to that area. So the bigger centres are always going to have the ability to access more funds than those in smaller areas. Under the current arrangement, it is obviously easier for [say] Auckland City to gain funding for 10 player/coaches than [say] Hawke's Bay as HB would struggle to find places to use 10 coaches, whereas Auckland have a myriad of avenues to sue them [based on population and junior playijg numbers.]

Its not really about who can find the best ways to pay players without paying them. Its about the contrasting financial positions of teams within the same amateur league.
There has to be a solution. It is obvious that larger cities like Auckland and Wellington have access to more trust money but how are the likes of Waikato and Dunedin (where most of the trust money goes to rugby anyway) suppose to compete? The current model is just going to perpetuate the degree of separation on the field too
Permalink Permalink

So your alternative is? given that you can't put all of the trust money into a pot then share it equally amongst all the franchises?

Permalink Permalink

Its hard to really rail on ACFC for this (as much as I normally do).

Fundamentally, the model is broken to such a degree that 'big market' teams are going to dominate. Shock, horror, this happens in pretty much every sport but when its 'charitable' money and its being directly used to pay players then that's an issue as much as its they are not breaking the rules.

There probably is no real solution other than taking all the charity money away (and sending it to real causes like Vanuatu or Christchurch as aid) but that's not really a solution to a cash strapped league.

I think its fair to say that NZF are not the answer and do not have the answer so what do we actually do? There needs to be a legislative change one would suspect for there to be any change to the status quo or some charities switching from rugby/racing to football and that has a snow balls chance in hell.

I know its been said that it can't be done, but being able to share trust money equally would solve the problem. NZ football should take responsibility for seeking trust moneys and then they can distribute that amount to the teams.
Trust money should not be (so much of) a point of difference between the teams.
Apart from that, I do not have a solution. You cant increase the amount of trust money in other regions and you cant remove trust money altogether.

Create sport clubs.

Wellington Rugby become a partner with a regional football team/ franchise.

Advantages share use of facilities, medicine, pooling resources.

Possible appetite for that type of setup could be out there, I think.

Would the Wellington Rugby release their physio for TW? When you look at preseason and when it starts in the middle of the ASBP, they would not agree to that because their prized assets are worth more. There would be nothing to be gained by rugby from football by pairing up.

There's a good level of public interest in football.

The model could stoke parochial feelings and support. It could create a new dynamic here that puts more of an emphasis on teams representing and perhaps less on the tools and rules of any chosen game.
