Bugger! I was hoping we might get to play you in the play-offs and another trip to Park Island. As it turned out the only way you would have got there was by forcing us out.

Your terrible home form did for you in the end. Looking forward to renewing the verbal "jousting" again next season if you, I and the Championship are still around.

Jonathan Taylor was a very dogged, rugged, tenancious player 4-5 years ago.

Bill Robertson was a big defensive unit in a generally struggling canterbury outfit. Gillespie is a good keeper, Matt hastings was a reglalr left-sided midfield starter for Melville United over winter until he surrpised by moving to Hawek's Bay three weeks before Melville won the northern premier league -- though never got a look-in for Waikato at NZFC level.

leon Birnie came across the alps with hannibal.

interesting to see some second generation classic Napier names there in Bauerfiend and Stanger, (and possible Clarke if any relation to the legend, Harry).

But agree with mr Waikato, nothing there to really frighten Waikato. Though again, depends what sort of team waikato can put out.

Bruce,

can you inform us what happened with Joel Mathews? Seems like Joel was a real stalwart last season and had resigned this season, only to disappear a week before the season?

It seems a shame that a number of the players that did so well for us last season have been dumped this year. Shame we don't seem able to build on the success of last season, just having to start again...

Losing Greg Walters, Joel Mathews, Nathan Strom, Graham Pearce, Craig Wylie, Michael Mayne, Ben Hunt, Nik Robson, Stu Hogg, Sam Margetts etc is surely a big problem?

If the new boys like Wasi, Wilkinson, Gwyther, Munday, Chewins, Peat, Bunce etc had been added to last years squad, imagine how strong we could have been..?

                                               Walters

Samson                  Bunce / Chewin          Pearce/Strom       Stewart

                              Wilkinson                van Rooyen

Gwyther / Robson                Holloway                          Wylie/Gwyther

                                            Peat/Bunce

Subs;   Chewin, Mathews, Barlow, Margetts, Robson

I'm not privvy to any particular information on Mathews.

My own observation was that it was obvious Joel was never going to get the nod at right back ahead of David Samson, who is just a far more physical and athletic specimen, who takes a fair bit of gettign around, and on his day, can also offer prodigious speed and stamina attacking down the flank.

That meant in terms of starting line-up either awaiting the inevitable Samson injury, or being thrown into the mix for left back against Chewins, Barlow, Stewart, Munday and several others.

Not a very appealing prospect for a "travelling" player.

But one of the under-rated aspects of coachign is the man management of nursing the bruised egos.

I must say I was astonished at the Times follow-up report on Mathews. i thought it defamed Bunce by implying he had told lies.

didnt Joachim Rande trial for the Phoenix in pre season?
I think it was him, heard some good things, including that he was "showing barbarouses a clean pair of heels during sprint drills"
must be fairly pacey then

Bruce have you ever thought of that the first article may have defamed Joel Mathews. Also ever thought that maybe Che Bunce may have been lying to cover up what really happend. Because from what i have heard around the ground at Kiwitea St last weekend it seems to be the player telling the truth in this case.

Also it is obvious to everyone you have a love for Che Bunce or any Melville Utd player. Maybe you can let yourself break away and have an open eye on things.

Sure Samson is a good player, i watched him during winter season hes a handy player to have, but not even on joel mathews level.

Theres no doubt more players will leave during the season under Bunces reign.

C'mon City!!

Hahahaha Matt Hastings playing for Hawkes Bay, average as.
Yes think Bunce has taken on to much with Waikato with no previous coaching experience and how he has handled the Matthews case is a joke.
Samson is a better player than Matthews but hes injured far too often.

The appointent of Gay Bunce as he is known in Auckland was the wrong one. That franchise has gone backwards after doing really well to rebulid last year.

I havent come across this Hawkes Bay coach before? does anyone know what this man is like? Hopefully this weekends game will be a close encounter for the good of the league.

From what i have seen of Bunce he had a stella season upfront for Melville in the winter league and Matt Hastings put a lot of goals on his head..so be interesting too see how this goes tomorrow, will be there to view as sounds like Bunce assisted Hastings to get to HBU.

As for the matthews v samson argument, start a new thread however i know where my monies would go both at football and boat races....

Watched HBU v Waikato, first 40 minutes i thought HBU were the worst side i have seen at national league level for a while, they came back into it a little but really didnt threaten the waikato side. Must say the referring of Mirko Beniscke was of a high standard

Hello. I know this is a HB thread (they were relatively poor yesterday) but just to respond to a few points from Hear it Here.

I am not in a position to say who is telling the truth in the Mathews matter. However the clear implication from reading the Waikato Times report was that Che Bunce had lied. The thing about our defamation laws is it is not enough for something to be true - you must be able to PROVE it is true. That's quite a high threshold in a he-said, she-said spat. It certainly raised my eyebrows as someone who works in media, and i thought it was worth commenting on.

By contrast, there was clearly no defamation in the original article, where the Times speculated that questions of fitness were the subject of a disagreement between the parties, with no value judgment applied.

Joel is a good player and arguably has a better understanding of the game than Samson. But in a league where a fullback is going to be marking the likes of Hayne, Totori, Pearce etc, Samson has the advantage of natural pace and athleticism as a stopper. I was merely speculating on why things turned out as they did.

I am president of Melville United, and have never tried to hide the fact (it would be easy to post under a made-up name). I choose to post under my real name exactly so people can properly contextualise my comments. I am no apologist for Bunce, but have always had a starting position of offering support to all coaches of Waikato Fc over the years. I was supportive of Edmondson when he was coach, Wilkinson when he had the job, and Declan Edge before him. Though in all cases, it was never uncritical support.

I expect more players will leave Waikato. That is an occupational hazard in a  set-up where you have a squad of 20-odd and can only start with 11, and it is an amateur exercise with no recompense. Look, for all i know, my own son may choose to leave. But it is a big step to somehow apportion blame to Che for that.

It is something that goes with the territory. Bottom line is, you can't please everybody.

Finally, it you want to have an adult discussion, at least be grown up enough to respect people's proper names.

Hope this helps.

Bruce i credit you for writing your name on boards, I think we need more writers like you in the game although i dont usualy share the same thoughts!

Im just disappointed in the league and how things might shape up. Are city and waitak only going to get 3 competitive games a year now?!!! Waikato did really well last season to rebuild and they wern't a bad side to be honest.

From my understanding the likes of Wylie, Peace, Hogg, Strom and a few of the other top boys from Auickland had resigned for the club but when Bunce was announced they wanted out straight away.  A good coach is a coach who has respect from players and can recruit well. Unfortunalty it seems Waikato have signed second string Aucklanders this season. Dan Peat may be a find though. But likes of Mike McGwyther i heard barely started for their winter clubs.

But good result for them on the weekend but im thinking that result might show us the state of this league. Hawkes bay must be rebuilding after the loss of the Goulds, i wasnt their biggets fans but they recruited some decent players and did provide us with ongoing entertainment.

Bruce i dont really know you from a bar of soap but in your previous written work you mentioned bruised egos...maybe speaking about Mathews? Mate Bunce will destroy that club and players will leave. If your son leaves then that also shows me that Bunce cant do enough to retain players. He wasnt liked at the Kingz, nor at Hawkes bay by all accounts and within weeks we are hearing of rifs at Waikato FC. Lets hope that things get better because City need competitive games heading away!!

C'mon City!!!

How well was Bunce liked when he played for Auckland City and helped them win the Oceania Champions League and qualified them for the FIFA world club champs?

To add some HB flavour to this thread....

Bill Robertson suffered a horror break to the leg, just above the ankle, he was having an op l;ast night at Waikato hospital.

The big man didn't flinch. But for those of us on the sideline it was hard to watch.

until then he had been HB's best player.

I thought Richard gillespie had a game he would like to forget in goal. his decision-making was suspect, had no dominance in his 6-yard box and was regularly in a tangle with his defenders.

HB had a general inability to play the ball out from the back, and too readily kicked the ball into touch to be taken seriously at this level.

i hate to be negative, but this was the worst Hawke's bay/Napier team i could recall in the past 20 years.

Bu  they scored two goals and could easily have had two more, though largely that would have been as a result of waikato's own errors.

The surface was not conduicive to good football and overall the play was only northern league standard. Coupled with the fact that for two weeks running the Sun-Star Times and Herald on Sunday have pretended the NZFC doesn't exist, it doesn't look good overall.

If this is an ego question, is the issue an ego with the coach, or with the players?

Bunce pinned his colours to the mast early and said 'I'm picking Waikato boys' and thats what he has done. To me, the only problem with those players is that they are not from Waikato. Can't knock the coach for picking home grown talent like he said he would.

I have nothing to add to this thread but will say two things:

1. Bruce - while often in the past we've not agreed I always enjoy reading your posts, don't go changin'.

2. This is the Hawkes Bay United thread and you lot have hijacked it with Waikatoness, please direct all further Waikato discussion here: http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9051&PN=9

That is all.

edit - I have now moved most of the offending material...

This looks interesting!! I hope Chandler didn't actually say "has a good left footed boot" how good does that sound from a national league coach?! Good chance to scott futsal player to bring into the national league, at least we know the team will be good when they play small sided games at training! And lets hope he doesn't us a keeper as a overage play in the youth league, maybe someone that needs game time, a outfeild play. not saying keepers don't need to be match fit by the way!

Thats a bit of a worry if thats the highest level the "good left boot" has played at, although he is a international futsal player. maybe thats the new national league format its futsal and only matt chandler knows about it and is getting a head start  if that is the case then you might as well call us champions!  the_gaffa_hb2010-08-19 22:34:29

after further investigation of the "good left boot" it seems that he couldn't make the Western Suburbs 1st team so isn't upto Central League standard, so how he is good enough to play National League i'm unsure.
Does anyone know what level Eakins has played at?

I hear ya mate, they need to get a good old pro that has played at a decent level in the UK, not some young guy that says he been at this club and that club but is actually crap like keep bring over! I'd rather see local young guys playing then crap imports.
