I'm not privvy to what their plans are but I kind of agree with you. I don't think I've seen too many of their imports that would be better than what is available within this Country. It is hard though, isn't it?, in getting a top class player given that it is an amateur competition. Such a player would need to come and be a coach within the academy or team set-up. Then, would one player be enough to make a differenc eon the field - probably not. I'm presuming that the whole idea of these franchises is to build up talent in their own areas to such a level that they don't need to bring in outside players. Again it is very hard to compete with the likes of Waitakere and Auckland City [not withstanding any WCC money they have received] because there are so many other opportunities with and without football in Auckland where you can put your imported players and employ them.

I agree that it will be hard to get a top class player, but just looking at the PFA website there are plenty of players out there that are coming to the end of careers who may like the bay in the summer! Francis Jeffers, Lee Hendrie, Keith Gilliepie i know they are probably a bit out of reach but these are players that are out there looking for clubs. I think there is always room for outside players as long as they are good and have experiance (not just playing for a acadmy team) . If they can get hold of someone that has played 150 football league games i'm sure the younger members in the squad will benefit.

I bet the rest of the academy players are stoked with the media's favouritism of the coaches son.

Peverley is a very good signing for HBU.
When he play like in Wellington, then this is a very good transfer. He isnt old but he can lead a team and is a All White. Top.

Just come back from the HBU AGM, very positive. The team looks better than last year on paper. 14 returning players from last year, 6 new signings and 5 Academy players.

Memory now - Andy Bevin is back. Some young fella from Western Suburbs, NZ futsal captain from Auckland, Peverly of course, Jarrod Smith, a mate of Phil Clark who used to play for Chester City or Chesterfield, Ryan [Yugoslav name] GK from Palmy Marist [who is also GK coach], there is one more, can't remember who he is.

Apologies, didn't know exactly where he was from so went for the old Josep Bros generalisation.

isn't his twin brother coming as well?
they must have got "Chester City, Chesterfield mixed up with Caernarfon Town! easy mistake to make!

I can't understand why he signed Ryan as the 3rd Keeper when both keepers from last years youth team are still in the bay and more then good enough to step up.

I heard one of the reserve keepers is likely to get game time for the youth team as one of the overage players. Not an issue really.

Masty's a good keeper, a thug, but a good keeper and a nice enough bloke. He would have thrived at that AGM, to bad he was out of town.

The squad is looking good, would like to see them do well this year - top four maybe.

Is the inclusion of the five academy players part of the new rules? Are they any five selected on form throughout the campaign or a certain five selected from the start of the season?

I hope all squad members are going to get runs as overage players to keep match fitness up, i don't think the keepers benefit from in it quite the same way. If both of last years youth keepers aren't playing then he will have to drop down as the next in line is Matt Gould who still a bit young.

Um, keepers need game time as much as any other player on the park, particularly reserve keepers. Pretty sure Ryan plays a similar role to what Gouldie does for the Phoenix, GK coach and third GK for when needed. Unless a Youth GK is exceptional, they won't get a run before Ryan. Is Shaun Peta Second in line?

Gillespie 1 Peta 2. I just think a younger keeper will benefit more from being #3 rather then Ryan, just a bit of a kick in the teeth for the young guys.

Did you realise that Shaun is only 21? I think that ticks the 'young up and comer' box. Fact is Ryan fills two roles which is hugely beneficial HBU. It's pretty obvious why they're doing it.

How young are these younger keepers? that youth league is good for guys in their teens, and they would get to train with the first team keepers (and coach) surely. Their time will come.

yeah i realise his age, and he is up and coming as are the other lads, both are still under 19. You would hope they get to train with the first team but i'm not holding my breath!
From what i have heard Ryan fills 3 roles as he was apparantly running around in Centre Mid at training on Wednesday. might be one to watch.

There will be time for the keepers to train with first team but at this stage why would they? Have they even been at youth trainings? Off to uni? Maybe think about things like that.. Centre Mid at training carrying the bottles in maybe.

have they been asked to train? why wouldn't they train now? would be more benefit then training with the youth team/under16s.  one maybe off to uni, one isn't.

its a bit of a worry if players keep passing the ball to the water boy then.

A good 3-0 win over a poor manawatu, pretty comfortable from what i have been told, Peverly couple of screamers, and McIvor coming out of reitrment for the 3rd time get the 3rd. might be lacking some depth  in the squad which is a worry.

Literally. Manawatu are so poor that we can't even afford to pay last years Golden Boot winner Seurle Soroman petrol money to travel from Masterton to play for us. Its going to be a bleak season.

Jason Hayne is on $1200 a game so they will be wanting him to get them to the o-league and reap in the cash. Im guessing once that happens Soloman can put more than a fiver in at BP.
