Three for me, and two for them.
Objectively, Manawatu chose to sit off and in the first half, I don't think they made a tackle. They also pushed high with the defence and all the guy Andreu had to do was chip it over the top with some nice soft floaters. Corrales was easily man of the match and he gave Nathan Cooksley an absolute nightmare time up the right flank. Embarrasingly, Cooksley was given man of the match when he should have been dragged 25mins into it. He was worse than a park level footballer and I don't think he even cared to stand within 10y of Corrales and think about marking him.
Mulligan is the best footballer in the league but to be fair, he and Auckland were allowed to play and given the time and space with no pressure to do so. They did all of their stuff easily with out any pressure from Manawatu. When you take that into context, its easy to see why they play quite well - cause other teams are nowhere near as good and because they have no idea how to defend that style of play, they sit off and let them play. The Chinese guy Nobi up front was a passenger when he should have considered chasing the ball along the back 4 a bit more. Sure it might not have been the game plan, but to just sit and watch and let Auckland do their thing was even dumber. Take away their time on the ball and make them choose decisions under pressure and force the mistake. That was never going to happen. Cory Chettleburgh, if he was seriously in consideration for a Phoenix contract then Ricki must have rocks in his head. I always thought he had something about him until today. He was a complete also ran. While its hard when you have 5% possession, it even harder when he lofted that many balls into touch or took a quick freekick to a team mate 5y away with 3 ACFC players up his ass in his own half.
Auckland looked really good but to be fair, I think their undoing in Japan might be the Kiwi players (exclude Mulligan and Vicelich from that) whose first touch is a little off. You can see the skill of the imports and the time their first touch creates. Under pressure in the CWC, they will have nowhere near as much time on the ball and the first touch of Hogg, Pritchett, Coombes and Feneridis will let them down because they will then have to regather and make decisions under pressure. Another (and the last) criticism of Auckland was the amount of times they went back from an attacking position when there was a clear easy option going forward. Ramon has really coached them well in terms of keeping possession but I think he may have over coached it where the players will not take even the remotest risk of making even an 80-20 pass. I can recall a few times in the 2nd half when they broke and running 3 at Manwatu's back 4 - ACFC have the skill and pace but yet they get over half, slow it, allow Manawatu to put 10 men behind the ball again and it was frustrating. When you are 5 up, you either bring the kids on, or you take the risk and see what happens. Manawatu were never going to have a clue about how to shut it down so it begs to defy why so often they wanted to get organised. Other teams against them will not do the same in return.
Otherwise it really was a team that completely and totally outclassed the opposition and the 5 nil score line did not do it justice.
Credit to the 248 crew who actually kept their chants on Auckland and clean today so well played gentlemen.
Agree about that Cooksley, Awful at best. Surely he did not get man of match.
Jeff... Hoggs touch cant be that bad, last time Auckland City went...he was named in the club world cup tournament team alongside dani alves puyol and messi. His touch and driving runs are outstanding i think he will be instrumental in any success they have over there. But agree Pritchett does not have best touch but would possibly start him and Feneridis will have to fight it out in training for a starting spot i feel.
Andreu looked great today but again under no pressure from a hopeless manawatu side.
Agree on Mulligan.
Think Chettleburgh for Manawatu would be better in a good side, he was their best player but had nothing and i mean nothing around him to work with.
How it wasnt 10-0 is beyond me.
Yes Cooksley got man of the match. Stu Jacobs stood up and said he was giving it to him because of the adjustment at half time and he never gave up. In the first half he didn't try so anything was going to be an improvement and he was moved out of the left back spot so Corrales stopped embarrssing him. Why was he moved from there? Cause Stu recognised he was geting absolutely destroyed....
Chettleburgh had nothing to work with I agree but some of the options he did take, we just stopped and went 'but why?'. I can recall he had the CB 10 yards to his right. Rather than give it to him, he rifled it 40yards on the fly, into touch, on the full. This was common as was Borren playing forceback to Spoonley which I think Stu needs to be shot for not picking that one. Even a 'Hey Matt, stop kicking possession back to them on the full please' might have done it.

I am not sure which game Stu Jacobs watched. "Manawatu coach Stu Jacobs was pleased his team kept on trying and never gave in despite falling behind".
This game was decided on the right flank where Corales beat his defender to many times creating good scoring opportunities.
Manawatu flat back four allowed a few balls to be chipped over and Corales manage to finish one of these with a very nice first touch volley.
I was surprised that Stu didn't replaced his left fullback after 10-15 minutes or pushed him in midfield position (he did in 60min when it was 3:0) It was so obvious he can't keep up with Corales. Perhaps he had no alternative on the bench?
The disappointing thing is that while I would not classify the 3 of us as football experts, if we can see it, why can't Stu? And to give him man of the match??????

Overall, it was a good free-flowing game, and though Manawatu were never dangerous, I thought they weren't too bad. Only criticism for ACFC was that Corrales was getting into perfect positions but then the ball would be passed back to the last line of defence (Andreu and Mulligan - I thought they were midfielders?) time and time again.
Highlights from yesterday's match, Auckland City v YHM

Mulligan had the rader out yesterday and Corallas was grateful for that because in the past its been easy for the wide players to become fustrated with laboured passing.
Great Higlights of the game whoever did that!
If this game was one where Auckland looked to go forward more then I don't want to see the other games and how backwards they would have gone.

They have been playing a 4-3-3 but yesterday the played with 3 at the back but dropped Andreu to make it a 4 when out of possession. Similar to what barca do when they play weaker sides. Overload the midfield in possession but out of position consolidate with a back four.
Andreu didnt have to drop back alongside Ivan much as manawatu were that bad. Andreu and Mulligan were picking up and getting on the ball whenever they liked under no pressure and were running the show. Mulligan started out wide left but cam inside so i dont think they were playing any particular formation. Even Hogg from a 3 at the back was at times getting beyond strikers and people were filling in for each other. Manawatu couldnt cope with Auckland Citys movement off the ball.
However i think we will see a more structured setup in Japan.
from the video it looked like 3 at the back, but i was puzzled to see hogg and pritchett feature so prominently up the pitch!
Fuck this stupid game

Auckland City FC
In Iwa SHAKER (Onehunga Sports); Tamati WILLIAMS (Forrest Hill Milford); Riki VAN STEEDEN (Eastern Suburbs); Mario ILICH (promoted)
Out Sam CAMPBELL (Queensland Lions, AUS); Andreu GUERAO (Dinamo Tblisi, GEO); Thomas DOYLE (US college scholarship); Halili NAGIME (released); Daniel MORGAN (released); Liam LITTLE (returned to Dunedin for family reasons)
What caught my eye was that another Spanish player, by the name of Ivan Diaz Ruiz, is due to arrive as Andreu Guero's replacement in the midfield. The article said that he was still waiting for his visa to be completed. Strangely the name disappears a few hours later from the article.
Seems like Auckland might want to make the announcement later when all is confirmed?
This might be him?

When your struggling you tend to bring in quality, these signings would suggest that the club has no money to fork out...however we know they have a cheque book on the desk..Did he visit a rest home to get Van Steedens ink on paper?? Shaker?? i had to google him, has he ever played for a decent side? Williams? havent seen enough but have heard good things.
Objectively, how much are they going to play?

Interesting. There's more discussion of the actual footie in this thread.
But yeah, thinly veiled distain, allegations and speculation, jealousy of funding structures & discussion on the fortune it costs to get up to the Pacific for the O League and the odd Darlek like attack on ACFC go in this thread, the other one "ACFC Champions of Oceania' was set up to discuss the actual footie. Which in this week when we celebrate ACFC in the Club World Cup shall be a pleasure.
Probe launched into pokie machine grants
Search warrants have been executed up and down the country as part of an investigation into pokie machine grant manipulation.
Internal Affairs director of gambling compliance Debbie Despard said the investigation was significant, involving a number of agencies including the Serious Fraud Office.
No details on the amount or search warrants or their location were made public.
"The Department of Internal Affairs has responsibility to ensure the integrity of the grants system in pokie machine gambling.
"The wider community is disadvantaged if one group can gain preferential access to grant funding from gambling proceeds," Despard said.
"Where the Department finds serious, harmful, and deliberate non-compliance in the gambling sector we will hold people to account. Our ability to do this is enhanced by drawing on the specialist resources of the SFO."
NZ Community Trust confirmed it has been contacted by the Department of Internal Affairs and Serious Fraud Office over alleged manipulation of gaming funds.
The trust has issued a statement saying it does not believe it is the subject of the enquiry.
"NZ Community Trust will continue to assist both agencies with their
investigation and supports any and all measures to ensure that the
distribution of gaming machine funds is undertaken within the law.
"NZ Community Trust is not in a position to comment further until the DIA and the SFO complete their investigation."
