"Ugly" was just a joke on my behalf, don't read anything into it.

This just came in my mailbox - great news!

We’re pleased to share an update on the successful mediation between our club and our Premier Women’s team. We agreed a way forward that’s resolved many of the concerns raised by the players and their supporters and will keep the team playing at Western Springs. Mediation followed the Premier Women’s team expressing concerns about equality of access to resources, and other issues affecting the team...
The Premier Women’s teams’ expenses budget will be increased to be equivalent with the Premier Men’s team;
A recruitment process to appoint a new Head of Girls and Women’s Football is underway and an announcement will be made soon;
Changes to Western Springs’ constitution will be recommended at our next AGM to embed a commitment to equality, diversity, and player representation on our committees;
An appointment process is underway for an independent advisor to develop a Girls’ and Women’s’ Programme Development Strategy, to be delivered this year;
The club will increase efforts to attract more women to the Senior and Executive Committees, noting there is equal gender representation on the Junior Committee now;
The executive has also agreed to develop a clear pathway for raising and resolving member’s concerns and issues

I note the agreement says nothing about the club logo; although the Herald article last week said that a new one had been drawn up by someone. I think the logo issue is an order of magnitude less important than the other issues that have been agreed, but it'll be interesting to see what happens - with that, and with the constitutional changes which the players were trying to shove through at an EGM

Bonnie's doing a victory lap

But let's hope this shuts up some of those incels on the NL Forum who were salivating about a bunch of purple-haired lesbians being shut down and sent back to the kitchen to make them sammiches

Well, Bonnie's gonna need to find something else to write about now that the cash cows over.

Good that mediation was successful in the end but tbh this whole thing felt like it got a lot more attention than it deserved.

Getting attention for it seems to have been a winning option for the players

Sure but now it's not just the club and supporters that look like petulant children.

But hopefully the women now kick on and win some silverware, they'd have to be just about the most looked after women's team in the country.
19 Jun 21:06
Not sure about "best looked after". What got lost in the media coverage is that it wasn't really parity with the menfolk they were after, but parity with what they knew other clubs were providing.

But I'm familiar with the argument from any labour dispute that if people fight for an improvement in their conditions - and win - they "look like petulant children", because making a fuss is very looked down on in NZ culture. Especially if you happen to be female.

But we can agree - hope WSAFC win the Northern League, the National League *and* the KS Cup this year!

So has WS retained all their players?
Could they come out of this with a stronger team?

No word about any Prems players leaving - but also nothing about Ryan Faithfull getting his job back, which is what brought this situation to a head. Hard to say whether the team (as a team) will be stronger, because some of the NL Forum trolls are trying to claim that the younger players now resent the older players who were leading the protest, but that may be bullshark. I wonder who will be coaching for the rest of the season.

It just struck me that if the WS women's prems think the WSAFC logo looks like a cock'n'balls, at least they're not the Tasmanian women's AFL team, whose logo is, um... a map of Tasmania

Or playing for Christchurch United - nickname The Rams, on their logo or Selwyn United - nicknamed The Stallions, not on their logo.

Should be an interesting season, expansion to 10 teams and resulting drop to 9 games means the non-Northern teams will have to get into form a bit earlier. Hopefully will be more competitive in terms of title race this season. Suburbs, AU and Springs favourites to make the final rn.

Still pissed about the free pass that central football's getting with this comp. Palmerston north marist were no where near good enough to qualify but got a hand out which they declined. Madness.

Nix Reserves are far better than Karori and wellington United based on the matches I've watched. Don't know what that means for other teams in the comp. Admittedly the last time I watch central league  teams play the reserves it was pre season.

I was just speaking to someone who said that Nix drew with WU today. I really don’t know anything about them apart from getting smashed by boys and probably losing players to first team. It is hard to gauge the best young ones vs the oldies. Sounds like I have definitely under done them and they are decent,  but I still fancy Wharf and  WU finishing above them

I don't like this new FIFA+ interface. It lacks the best thing about YouTube, the ability to rewind through the timeline to rewatch bits. I started watching 1 minute in and missed the first goal in Central v WSAFC

You think? They're honestly holding their own IMHO. WS have got a couple of lucky goals and Central have been very unlucky not to get a couple back. I'm disappointed in the WS team today, not clinical on attack and caught dozing on defence. Hopefully things will get better when Ela Jerez is back from Tahiti.

BTW, anyone see some of those clowns on the Northern League forum trying to start the meme that Maia Vink is a crap coach? Thought that might be amusing to some Wellington types who know her track record

I mean, the half time score kinda says it all. But the state of that team is just strange all around.

It was initially supposed to be the top three teams from the Central league through but once NZ football realised that Marist were well off the mark they decided to give an automatic spot to the top ranked Central fed team which obviously ended up being Marist. They actually turned down the offer of being in National League so then the Central fed team was reinstated, mostly featuring players from Marist but also a few Taradale and a couple of others.

I can't see them getting any results this year.

Great win for the Nix reserves today. 4 -0 will give the girls heaps of confidence

It feels wrong to me that you can drop down a contracted professional player into an amateur competition.

Same rules as the men's reserve team by the looks.
For this game Main, McMeekan and Elliott played. I'm pretty sure they have all been part of this team all year long playing in the central boys comp. Two of those 3 are scholarship players. Barry also played. Think she was given 60min as coming back from an injury. She was training separate from the group a few weeks back.
Good option for the AL team. And kind of what it's about for them.

Saw a couple of games - only first half of Central v Springs, but Central looked badly out of their depth and got carved apart. Had some chances of their own to be fair, but just couldn't keep up with skill of Springs attacker. Like others have said - looks like a very tough season for them.

Caught Southern v Eastern Suburbs in Dunedin - a good match! First half was close with chances both ways and Southern defending quite well and needing some saves. Suburbs started the second half stronger and got their deserved goal, a wonderful strike, and Southern ultimately couldn't create enough to get level.

Somewhat slow start for Suburbs but got the 3pts, Southern look to be a similar tough to break down team as last season.

The scoreline was misleading. WS looked very fragile at the back, esp. after the 60 minute subs, especially any time Baumgartner (sp?) got the ball. Only Tusisamoa's heroics on goal saved WS blushes. If they play like this against Eastern Subs or AU they'll get owned.

The Nix reserve teams game was pretty interesting. Some nice technical skills and good goals. Interesting comments here on the latest Niche Cache podcast about team formation. And wonder if this is a sneek preview of how the senior team is going to line up and play this season.

If beating a team 8-0 means you're going to get "owned" against ES...

What's gonna happen to the team that lost 8-0 against ES...?

Well, that's why they have the mercy rule in baseball.

Look, I don't know why you characters are busting my chops on this. WSAFC are my club, I know what our Prems are capable of, and they didn't bring their A-game against Central (nor in the last two games of the Northern League, come to think of it). As I say, talk has already started on the forums that Maia Vink isn't up to scratch.

They didn't need to bring their A-game against Central... it's hard to judge when it's against a team that behind them on quality (like judging our under 17s on how they're playing at the current OFC tournament).

Happy to hear more after the Ellerslie game this Friday.
