Basically I think Varsity feel shafted. The new Cale was built on top of what was their no. 1 pitch and rightly or wrongly have considered it to be their home ground ever since. They feel they should have priority over Tech who have a home ground but choose not to play on it and who have adopted the Cale as a home ground long after Varsity did. They also see other options such as Tahuna for Tech.
Personnaly I appauled Tech's decision not to play at Culling Park which, even at best, is to small to play 1st team football on. Northern should make a simlar decision as the Gardens is no where near premier league standard.
I can see why Varsity think they have been shafted as Tech obviously do get priority and its no surprise as Tech for some reason do seem to get looked after by Footballsouth.

Talking to Terry Parle pre game thats exactly it. Tech only moved there in recent years because it suited the style of football Fridge wanted to play. Uni don't have a problem with this, but whenh they get moved and Tech don't they get a little annyed.

But its not like Cavey can talk. They had the Caley sitting there for the Cup game, which would have been much better for players and spectators but they chose to play on the bog that is Tonga

I'll have a word to FootballSouth receptionist Peter Ritchie & have him change all Tech's remaining home fixtures to Culling Park no 2, i'm not guaranteeing anything here, this simple task might be well above his station Blanche2010-06-15 10:20:34

That's a bit harsh on poor old Tonga. It handles the rain pretty bloody well, all things considered. There was a weeks worth of torrential rain leading up to that game. Most of the pitch held up alright, it was just due to the heavy traffic in the middle that saw some mud being slung about. On the same day, any other ground in dunedin would have been in the same condition after 15 mins.

Besides this, Cavy got drawn at home, and would have lost any possible home advantage at the Caley, which is Techs home ground. If they had drawn any other team for that round, they may well have played there instead.

I completely understand Cavvy wanting to play at Tonga, in the same situation I would do exactly the same.

The question for me is wether not they should be given a choice. To promote the game should Footballsouth not give clubs the choice and put all big cup games on the Cale?

A goal each to your brothers?

I agree QT have been struggling lately and Braes are definately looking better this year.

I'll go Braes 3-1

Northern to get pumped 6-1 by Tech

and Spirit to beat a depleted Varsity side 4-1

In the Cup
Cavvy should be too good for Mosgiel 4-0

and ditto for Roslyn over Hearts 5-0

Chatham Cup:

Caversham 8 - 0 Mosgiel
Northern Hearts 2 - 5 Roslyn

Elsewhere:
Northern 0 - 4 Dunedin Tech
Grants Braes 1 - 0 Queenstown
Spirit FC 2 - 0 University

Cavy are gonna be hard to beat in Chatham cup, that's a mighty performance.

I agree Cavvy will be tough to beat but they have much tougher tests to come. It would be great to see Steve Fleming win a Chatham Cup

Queenstown missed about 6 regular starters and were forced to play Oded and Steve who played CB last week as Strikers...so that certainly didnt help. but anyways i got told it was a close game and Shannon scored for Braes.

Braes are having a good season!

There really is a need for a seperation of the top two teams into a South Island League.
As much as I admire Cavvy's football it does get tired that it is a two team title race every year and in the end the same team wins..

The third placed team got an 8-0 second half lesson in the Cup.

Currie, i've been very disappointed with some of your recent performances on the line, i  know  Burgess is a whippet of some sorts, but you really need to keep up with the play, you can't keep giving offsides when you're 20 metres behind where you should be.

I'd suggest trimming that ridiculous perm? just because your idol Brent Best had one, doesn't mean you have to! and i know it keeps you warm during the winter months & cool in the summer but it really does look silly all year round.

Unfortunatley i am away in Auckland this weekend so won't get to see the game, My heart says Tech to edge it but my head says another comfortable Caversham win.
I predict plenty of goals and a red card for each side.

Marshie played very well, Physical but still got the touch. Game was played in good spirits until near the end when pressure probably told. Quite even game, will be interesting in the 2nd round.

Is the league separating into the top 4/ bottom 6 like it did last season? There's such a gulf in class between the top and bottom of the table. There needs to be regular games between quality opposition if the standard of football is to increase. Southern League needs to come back.

0-0 down here in Queenstown for Spirit v Queenstown. Adrian Panoti(think thats his name)Dislocated and Broke his ankle in about the 25th minute. The game was held up for 45 minutes or so and all in all not much action...pretty dull tbh. Any other results?

Cavy 6-2 Mosgiel
Mosgiel faught hard for about 60-70 minutes, coming back from 2-0 down to level it up at 2-2 midway through the second half. They were also unlucky not to score off a well executed counter-attack. Cutis Day thumping it into the upright from the edge of the box when he really should've tucked it away. But again, Cavy's fitness and workrate proved superior as both Tom Jackson and Ant Hancock finished superbly to give themselves each a hat-trick. Mike Abbott didn't do Mosgiel any favours by talking himself into a yellow card in the second half, and earning the red about 10 mins later after a rash challenge. Deserved victory for Cavy, but perhaps exposing a couple of weaknesses that need to be patched up before their big Chatham Cup fixture against Bay Olympic in 2 weeks time.

Big game this weekend... a real decider

Hobbits v Green Island...

The Hobbits are coming off a good run of large wins, GI still unbeaten, whoever wins takes the cake.

With the Chatham Cup on this weekend anyone know what is the plan with games on saturday

Pretty sure it's up to individual teams themselves to reach an agreement with your opposition and let footballsouth know. Worth doing though, Cavy would love your support at the caley on saturday afternoon!
