So......what is the form X1 going around in the SPL right now?

heres mine, playing 3-5-2 of course....

P Evans
Z Rathbone, T Mather, T Connor
B Johnstone, D Overton, M Cunningham, S Mepham, T Prattley
A Burgess, H Rodeka

The link-up play between Overton and Mather would be very enjoyable to watch

The banter from Mather is enough to warrant him  being in the team. How does B-rad make the team?

Johnstone is having a whale of a season - very underrated player....
Hancock, havent seen muh of this guy in 2011, is he playing well? Rodeka seems to be amongst the goals again

Think I saw gangsta/goal scorer Tom Jackson swagging around the clubrooms last weekend, is he back in the groove?

Top shot of Fearless Phil...
Only watched a couple of games this season, Sam Mepham in a game against Onions and Burgess against Mosgiel.

Rumour mill.........potential league MVP Tim Mather apparently leaving overseas soon. That would be a huge loss for Roslyn.

Although Liam Dunbar was spotted in Dunedin recently - possibly a straight swap at CB for Mather.....?

Liam Dunbar , couldnt see that improving the Roslyn defence , opposition teams would welcome that exchange , cant even think what he did while he was in Dunedin except get bigger and bigger ??

Got into medicine? Several thousand health sci students at uni who would be jealous. But on the footballing front Dunbar is still recovering from the collision with his team mate up in welly football. Based on the size of Dunbar (as mentioned above), its hard not to feel sorry for the guy he ran into.

Why would you put p evans there? Isnt he a bit old to be still playing spl? There must be better younger blood in the league?

For those that don't know, the Dunbar collision was with David Capstick [see banner at the top of the page re fundraiser] - who had to have surgery after the incident and will probably never play again [as I understand it] and can't work or drive for six months. They were both on the same team. Terrible thing to happen. I think Dunbar was also in a bad way at the time but came off a bit better.

Just some more info for anyone interested.

Fuck this stupid game

Mosgiel to drop points at Ocean Grove, Caversham to hit 10 past GI, Tech to sneak a win, Roslyn to win by 5, Northern & southland 2-2

re weekend: mosgiel will be to good for braes evan with coldicott injured. Cavy by 6, tech by 3 over varsity, roslyn to win by 4 and northern 2-1 over southland...

managed to sneak a wee peak at the second half of the roslyn game on my way to KFC and they played some pretty good possession football, in saying that tho queenstown seemed to be a pretty poor side.... Michal Cunningham (a.k.a gippeto) was pulling all sorts of strings. He seems to be getting back to match fit. Could be a bolter for mvp of the league??

i watched Tech scrape through against Varsity 2-1 with 2 late goals. Pretty unconvincing stuff, and from what I saw the league could still be wide open - Tech certainly arent invincible, as Roslyn demonstrated a couple of weeks ago.

Come to think of it, Cunningham 'Gipetto' was pulling a few strings that day too.....I wonder how many times he's been given MOM this season by his coach

Varisty were the best team tech have played all year, miles better than cavy, mosgiel or roslyn. Uni didn't have the legs in the end but if they can put out that team against the teams i've mentioned, they'll murder them

Yea i also watched varsity play against roslyn the week before and they looked very sharpe in the first half also but in the second seemed to be holding on for dear life but were tidy at stopping wave after wave of attack... if tey didnt drink as much they might be able to cause some more upsets in the second round. Tech very lucky to scrape the 3 points out of this one i heard tho

Caught some of the Northern Spirit game yesterday. Northern were unlucky to go down but Spirit did play well 2 their credit.  If Northern can lift their game a little i think they'll give Roslyn a good run in the cup. Altho I have heard Michael Cunningham is starting to find glimpses of his old self!!

I've seen a few games of Roslyn this year. They look like a young team who can't play with the big boys when it gets physical. I don't know what all the chat is about Mike Cunningham, to me he looks slow and over weight. He would be lucky to make the Cavy or Tech side

U would have to be an absolute puppet to consider the midfielders of tech and cavy to be better then cunningham, he would walk into any team in this league and would most probably start for most NZFC teams... I dont see to many players in the Southern league who have played for new zealand at any level, or maybe im miss informed?? Furthermore by the sounds of it the tech midfield got taught a lesson yesterday??

Wally mate i think u must haved missed the cavy v roslyn and the tech v roslyn games this year. becuz it looked like m.cunningham was playing against children. hez the best midfielder in the league by far. And cant play with the big boys?roslyn beat tech and cavy and mosgiel wer lucky to get draws against em. just a few bad weeks against northern and uni hav cost em so far

@wearspiderslive, i can confirm the tech midfield were MIA in yesterdays clash against the students. i see the resurgent varsity team being this years giant killers after two well fought battles against tech and roslyn. early tips on a top 4 finish and zac rathbone for a place in the otago squad

mean machine i think ull find the problem with the tech midfild is that they dont seem to get the chance to play nething that remotly looks like football due to the direct nature that has been implemented by fridgy, this has been the case for several years now but without coburn the knock pocket long ball and nod down to late running midfielders doesnt seem to be working... but definalty agree on varsity being the giant killers however i feel the same thing will happen in that over the next couple of weeks they will lose there good american players who will be heading back home for the second semester and will also lose players to mid semester breaks and the snow season.... so sadly i cant see them pushing for the top 4.

Mr M Cunninham come on i doubt he would even make the otago utd team, word has it they tapping into Phelan's players in Goa!!!!!
Also Northern, Cavy,Tech and Varsity to win cup games

dude ur on another planet. I dont even support roslyn and I can admit that hez the best in dunedin by a mile. who would u have starting at CM ahead of him for united?
Permalink Permalink
almost 15 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

i dont really know what to say in retort to ur rediculous comment that he wouldnt make the otago team, if im not mistaken havnt otago been bent over more or less every year in the NZFC (played ok last year) and the likes of Rodeka made there team?? Hes in a different world when u compare him to the midfielders of the otago side.

Cup: Tech, Cavy, Varsity and roslyn to win... or tho northern might push roslyn quite hard

boy you two must really love this guy, is there something you wish to say!!
I only heard that there might be overseas players coming in and that wee guy Day could play there, he may be small but will do the job.
Lets see how mike goes against the Northern team (I hear they have the wood on ya)

Yea morgan day is a very good player theres no doubt about that and he appears to be in the scoring mood this year also well atleast he was last time i checked... unfortunatly am going away for the long weekend so wont be able to go watch the northern game, but in past years they most certainly have had the wood on roslyn, i think if roslyn play the football that they can tho they should dispatch of northern.

hows the culling park facilities these days? i see in the programme they are calling it the "events centre" now
Permalink Permalink
almost 15 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
I cant comment on this year but in previous days gone by the only time northern had the wood on roslyn was when playing on that hillside they call a home pitch.

Cunningham and day are different sort of players but would compliment each other quite well for united. But mikes got a touch of class about him whenever he gets the ball, pretty to watch for the neutrals

I agree with MThorne. I don't think Cunningham should be part of the United Set up and if there is players coming over from the US this is great news. I would rather see Sam mepthan (who was scored more goals and looked better) Morgan day and Tim Mather in there. If otago could somehow get Overton to stay down that would be great business.

I think ud b hard pressed to find many people who'd take Morgan day over mike. Morgans the man and is playing really well but mikes still got it on him. Mephams playing well aswel I've heard but can't comment too much. If Mather can get off the couch maybe. Also I heard he having problems with the management at Roslyn and might leave the club soon to head back to welly!! Watch this space...

Ive heard rumours that mike will be heading to australia to play over there come next year, and i dont think darren overton would play for otago considering he has played for chch for how ever many years and lives in chch... so i fear that dunedin will once again be playing with the likes of day and mepham and will most likely be struggling at the bottom of the table for another season....

I havnt been to cullen for years now... have they done it up into an event centre??
Permalink Permalink
almost 15 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
One thing I don't understand is why tech don't play at culling. It would be perfect for there long ball knock down game. It would prob help there old and less calibre players like justin flaws and richie smith

my oppinion on the matter is that theres not enough space on the field to generate pockets big enough for there CB to knock the balls into, therefore play on big f**k off fields
