Were not doing anything that cant be fixed with training twice a day, six days a week. We can talk about it all we like but with young guys, we're going to have ups and downs, but well get back to work again next week.
Early Feb this team will be in top form after the school holidays.
Most dont go to school, they have been convinced to leave school with the promise that they will all get pro contracts.. oh and they have signed contracts with their 'agent/coach' that pays him upto 15% of all future earnings...
Some have even been heard to say that they have or are being watched by Barcelona and AC Milan..
As ridiculous as it sounds to all sane individuals, these boys and their parents are buying this crap.. And now the WaiBop board has fallen for it..... CRAZY

Ray, firstly the occupational arrangements of Declan Edge's Academy players has nothing to do with the WaiBop board.

Indeed, the arrangements of Waikato FC at large have nothing to do with WaiBop. There is no connection. I think there is an obligation, regardless of your views, to acknowledge that error of fact.
Further, even the Waikato FC board is a disinterested party when it comes to the occupation or study options preferred by its constituent players. They have not "fallen" for anything.
And the board does not select the players.
The academy players and their parents have all made their own value judgements about career prospects.
I won't pass judgement on that, apart from making the observation that most folk saw it as a good thing when Chris Wood left school early to pursue football, but somehow it is a bad thing when a handful of other kids do so to pursue a career in the game at their own cost.
Not all will make it, some might. They have made their choices. And their coach has had the balls to effectively invest in them. Sure it's a punt, but if it comes off, it will serve the game well. If it doesn't - still time to study... Bottom line, players being developed at no cost to the rest of you. How good is that?
I don't understand why you are so aggrieved and have such a chip on your shoulder about everything others choose to do of their own volition. Live and let live.
I do agree that Waikato FC will have to address their national league performance issues. Waikato have taken a punt on youth coupled with a particular playing style. The coach must be answerable for that, so i guess the pressure will really be on this week to step up to the mark against opponents they beat pre-season.

Chris Wood left school early to purse football?
I think you will find even at WBA it is mandatory to continue your education while an Academy trainee. All be it only one full day a week.
At under 16 level you still attend school full time with one full day given to football
There still needs to be a balance between football and education at a young age.

Bruce it is very different leaving school to accept a scholarship at a professional club, to leaving school to train in Hamilton with 6 or so other 12-18 yr olds under a coach who has no affiliation to a professional club at all!!!
Yes these players have improved technically but are you telling me that they could not have done that as well as going to school? Could they not have trained before and/or after school for the same amount of time, so ensuring that they have an education to fall back on if/when they dont get that contract with Barcelona...
Exactly how many of these players have had professional trials, how many pro clubs have shown an interest in these players? If you can tell me 5 or 6 are going to be heading to the UK, Spain, Italy or A League sides for extended trials then I will hang my head in shame and retreat with my tail between my legs... (out of interest how many have European passports as without one they are very unlikely to get a contract at a European club anyway..)
Oh and I dont mean having a couple of kick abouts with the Phoenix as almost every player down here in Wellington has had a run against the Phoenix at some point or other..
I have no issue with the idea of an academy that exposes players to greater contact time and improves their technical ability but getting players of 'limited' ability to leave school in New Zealand at 14/15/16 is crazy and very unethical..
Rojas and Wood all stayed at school, training around the school day UNTIL they received pro contracts as would any kid in any other developed country around the world.
Having played with Declan previously, I have no issue with him personally, simply the process of convincing the kids to leave school and then USING WFC to promote them beyond their ability...
That will be my last comment on the subject and thanks for your response.

What's with Waikato playing out from the keeper every single time, which results in a string of hospital passes? Their defence are bad enough ball players as it is

hello. An apology. i have been contacted by a parent of a lad in Declan's academy.
I was incorrect in what i wrote.
All those of school age go to school, either at the likes of HBHS or do Correspondence School (where i am informed they are doing quite well). They are continuing their education in this manner.
Hope this clears that up.

at least those kids are doing something positive, aren't tagging, shoplifting, sniffing glue etc. I do agree with Humbug however that edge should be selecting on merit and both waikato teams are weaker for it
ps.shouldn't this thread be on the waikato page??

Oh really, who has he signed for? Great to hear though, funny NZf have not publicised it as they normally do with all new professional contracts?

Exodus Team Wellington will play the NZ Olympic Training Squad, who have a domestic camp in Wellington from the 5th-9th December 2011.
The game will be played at David Farrington Park on Tuesday 6th December, kick off 5.30pm.
This will be a great opportunity to see the best 'Domestic' U23 players in the country as early preparations get underway for the Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament in March 2012.

Best to describe the Canterbury win as 'ugly', but a win is a win. Both keepers pulled off several good saves.

TW gave the game some life in the 2nd half, they had Canterbury looking like the team down to ten players after Musa saw his second yellow then red for a needless rash lunge on the half way line.
The ref was not going to give the penalty for handball just a free kick on the edge of the box, the AR didn't give him a help to start with as the AR moved to cover the D line at the free kick before the ref went to him for a chat.
If AR knew it was hand ball in the box he should have stayed in original position and put flag to chest.
TW had the better of the chances except for the Barton effort that hit the crossbar late in the 2nd half, but for weak shooting TW worked hard to get at least a draw.
See what next weeks game in Welly between the two sides when it's 11 v 11.

Agree we were poor the 2nd half but as far as chances created we had far more than Wellington. The sending off was harsh more with the first yellow than the 2nd challenge which was'nt far off GBH, but that first yellow may have been more for verbal abuse than the hand ball. As for whether it was a penno or not watching the video in the bar afterwards it showed that it was clearly in the box however the ref and linesman didn't really work together and it just helped feed the Wellington players anger. After that it was all Canty untill half time. We could have had 3 or 4 easy but a combination of good goalkeeping and putting the ball to near the middle of the goal meant their was only 1 in it. Fair play to Wellington they gave it a good go in the 2nd half threw the wide men forward and played the aussie fella off Lucas with Eager sitting deeper. With the lack of space in our half we struggled to build any form of possession and resorted to playing it long to George up front. After getting alot of joy in the first half he was finding it hard to hold the ball up, the right back, schaeffers I think had a poor first half but when they moved him central he won the physical battle and youse seemed to get most of the 2nd ball. A freekick from white and a 1 v 1 from the right winger should really have resulted in an equaliser but for two excellent saves from Highfield. After that a shot straight at the keeper from Lucas was the only other chance you had. Despite the fact that you guys looked dangerous everytime you went forward Canty still created more clearcut chances but once again poor finishing was to blame. Youse are a very good side though and think 90 minutes of 11 v 11 will be very close. Despite being off the pace fully expect to see you in the play offs.

Not much of a match report on NZFC. What was the match like?
I thought is was pretty evenly matched. I thought Canterbury had more possesion in first half with Clapham creating some good opportunities, Calvin also was quite good. Canterbury just lacked the final blow. Wellington scored on the counter attack twice I think. Dakota certainly knows how to finish, nearly had a fourth. He partnered well with Tyson. I think Wellington were a bit quicker decision making up front. I thought Musa defended pretty well.
I say this with my little knowledge of football, as I'm a recent convert to the sport, so would also be interested in what others thought of the match?

Best we can aim for is 18 Dec and 18 March (sadder face). Soz.
