Ray, firstly the occupational arrangements of Declan Edge's Academy players has nothing to do with the WaiBop board.
Indeed, the arrangements of Waikato FC at large have nothing to do with WaiBop. There is no connection. I think there is an obligation, regardless of your views, to acknowledge that error of fact.
Further, even the Waikato FC board is a disinterested party when it comes to the occupation or study options preferred by its constituent players. They have not "fallen" for anything.
And the board does not select the players.
The academy players and their parents have all made their own value judgements about career prospects.
I won't pass judgement on that, apart from making the observation that most folk saw it as a good thing when Chris Wood left school early to pursue football, but somehow it is a bad thing when a handful of other kids do so to pursue a career in the game at their own cost.
Not all will make it, some might. They have made their choices. And their coach has had the balls to effectively invest in them. Sure it's a punt, but if it comes off, it will serve the game well. If it doesn't - still time to study... Bottom line, players being developed at no cost to the rest of you. How good is that?
I don't understand why you are so aggrieved and have such a chip on your shoulder about everything others choose to do of their own volition. Live and let live.
I do agree that Waikato FC will have to address their national league performance issues. Waikato have taken a punt on youth coupled with a particular playing style. The coach must be answerable for that, so i guess the pressure will really be on this week to step up to the mark against opponents they beat pre-season.
Bruce it is very different leaving school to accept a scholarship at a professional club, to leaving school to train in Hamilton with 6 or so other 12-18 yr olds under a coach who has no affiliation to a professional club at all!!!
Yes these players have improved technically but are you telling me that they could not have done that as well as going to school? Could they not have trained before and/or after school for the same amount of time, so ensuring that they have an education to fall back on if/when they dont get that contract with Barcelona...
Exactly how many of these players have had professional trials, how many pro clubs have shown an interest in these players? If you can tell me 5 or 6 are going to be heading to the UK, Spain, Italy or A League sides for extended trials then I will hang my head in shame and retreat with my tail between my legs... (out of interest how many have European passports as without one they are very unlikely to get a contract at a European club anyway..)
Oh and I dont mean having a couple of kick abouts with the Phoenix as almost every player down here in Wellington has had a run against the Phoenix at some point or other..
I have no issue with the idea of an academy that exposes players to greater contact time and improves their technical ability but getting players of 'limited' ability to leave school in New Zealand at 14/15/16 is crazy and very unethical..
Rojas and Wood all stayed at school, training around the school day UNTIL they received pro contracts as would any kid in any other developed country around the world.
Having played with Declan previously, I have no issue with him personally, simply the process of convincing the kids to leave school and then USING WFC to promote them beyond their ability...
That will be my last comment on the subject and thanks for your response.
