Hello there. I am sure Declan Edge cares about results. All coaches do. That is how they are ultimately judged.
And I certainly dont think Declan is "untouchable" in his post. Hes already been sacked from this position once. Indeed, his tenure very much depends on him being able to sell the philosophies he believes in to people who administer the club, funders, and those who pay at the gate (although paying at the gate would arguably account for only a microscopic amount of total revenue).
Declan needs results as much as any coach in the league. Probably more-so, given there are an awful lot of people within the game hoping and just waiting for him to trip up.
If Waikato is perceived to be an embarrassment and lacking credibility, I would suggest he would not be re-appointed later this year. He is under as much pressure as anyone.
On the other hand, if he can produce entertaining, attractive and competitive football using 80 per cent or more of homegrown players with a nil budget, his efforts will be worthy of respect.
Declan has been charged with running a team which is broadly reflective of Waikato football.
This summer all players have either played their winter football in the Waikato, previously represented Waikato FC, or been products of the province. Declan operates under more constraints than any other national league coach, as far as I can tell. For example, nobody tells the Auckland and Waitakere coach they cant pick whoever they bloody well like.
Waikato FC are thus perhaps more answerable to their base than most franchises. And Declan is no less accountable than any franchise coach.
Good reasoned comments as always Bruce:it's always nice to read observations that are well thought out and backed with facts, rather than emotional ranting that is centred around Mr Edge himself.
Having said that, looking at the criteria you expect Edge and his team to be judged by,I feel they are failing on most counts.Waikato certainly aren't competitive, apart from the odd spell in a game and the issue of attractive/entertaining football is in the eye of the beholder I suppose.Frankly, teams that play neat little triangles in their own half and little else, aren't for me ,attractive to watch:there must be an end product;this appears to be lost on Waikato's coach. In summation,I would say that Waikato is neither competitive nor entertaining, and that the type of "attractive football",that Mr Edge espouses, definitely is open to interpretation.Perhaps the term "effective football" might be worth considering if he's retained next season...
Waikato FC's rescheduled home match against Hawke's Bay has again been postponed.
The match was due to be played at 2pm today (Sunday January 8) after being deferred from December 18.
A new date has yet to be set.

the cutbacks could even see our groundsman at Gower Park made redundant.
You must be joking Bruce. Is grass in his job description?
Hello. The councils parks and gardens unit is facing the biggest trim in council cutbacks, where more than $35m is due to be cut from the budget in the next 10 years
News reports suggest up to 10 per cent of Hamilton City Council's full-time staff could be axed over the next two to three years.
More than two dozen jobs will remain under threat until service reviews are settled in June, and another 17 definitely going this year to save money.
The council has 859 full-time equivalent staff, a figure expected to fall below 800.
What may happen is that designated park groundsmen lose their jobs and are replaced by rip, sh*t and bust contractors who are a cent cheaper and provide a far inferior end product.
It's a worry
