Back in 2007, Benitez had a pop at Chelsea for giving out plastic flags before Champions League matches in an attempt to create some atmosphere at Stamford Bridge:

"We don't need to give away flags for our fans to wave; our supporters are always there with their hearts, and that is all we need.  It's the passion of the fans that helps to win matches, not flags."

This is one reason. There is probably others.

Wouldn't go as far to say he turned Chelsea around.
Before Rafa arrived we were 4 points behind United in the league and were competing in the League Cup,FA Cup, Club World Cup, and Champions League.
After his interim tenure, we were left battling for 3/4/5th in the league closer to 20 points behind Man U, and lost out on all of the previously mentioned competitions.

One good thing he did was to try David Luiz in Defensive Midfield which worked well, and Luiz has got much better as the season went on.
Most of the substitutions Rafa made were poor, and he had great difficulty breaking 4-2-3-1 even when it wasn't working.
He got better towards the end of the season (e.g. subs against Villa when we were a man down, trying Ba and Torres together for a short stint...I can't remember against who now).

I'm glad we've secured Champions League qualification, and am happy we've won the Europa Cup, but I think our success was more down to the quality of players than any tactical input from Rafa.
I'm sure he's done well to get his name back in the limelight after 2 years of being unemployed, and wish him the best at another club.
It would be good if he could find work at another Premier League club, as I'd love to see how other fans feel about his work after a season or two, and it would be great to have The Special One back to deal out some sound beatings against him.

The results in the last couple of months show what a class act Rafa is considering the unbelievable abuse and the disgraceful lack of support he has been given by the fans, board and players.

Rafa is boss. No question for me. Absolute class act.

Now, about that Courtois lad...... Please can we keep him?

And Rafa stopped your "Special One" getting to a European final... Twice. You probably wouldn't have lasted the season playing the way you were before Rafa came in and started rotating.

To be fair mate, throughout Rafa's career, what's he ever done to show he knows what he's doing?

Rafa is so "good " Liverpool want him back asap......he may get Liverpool up to 4th, which would be like winning the league for them...!!!!!!!.......[ best part Rafa acheived has been sorting John Terry out ]......

First job: sell Courtois to Atleti for cheap. Thank you.

For how long will he be back? The Russian didn't/doesn't know when hes got a good thing going when it comes to football. Instead of instant success, he should be thinking of 3-5 years. All the guys including the special one, that he's ditched for instant success.

Apparantley Jose thinks quite highly of Luiz

Jose has signed for 4 years, I really hope he gets this at least.  But who knows, Roman can be rather impatient.

Also leaked images of the contract!

That would be about right for the Russian. (Even if this was meant in jest)

Forgot to update this:

Signed Andre Schurrle from Bayer Leverkusen on a 5 year deal wearing number 14.

Can play wide or as a striker

Just heard that Anelka has signed for West Brom.

Rumour that PSG have upped their bid for Cavani from 43m to 49.3m

Does this mean we'll bring Lukaku back to the first team?  Seems like a player that Mourinho would want

Mark Schwarzer to Chelsea.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

wow weird, didn't see that coming.  One year contract on a free transfer.

Too good for a reserve keeper but surely wont start ahead of Cech.

Better than Hilario or Turnbull (who I think has left the club any way).

Rooney........let him play in the second team at United.....Chelsea don't need  him

Real Madrid 2 v Chelsea 1 this morning in a friendly in Miami

(Madrid: Marcelo, C.Ronaldo; Chelsea: Ramires)

http://www.goal.com/en-ca/match/120509/real-madrid-cf-vs-chelsea-fc/play-by-play?ICID=OP

Good game and not much between the two sides - Mourinho must have felt uncomfortable though against the side he recently quit...

David Luiz to join Barcelona ? - they've upped their offer today " Barcelona bids 25 million euros for David Luiz"

Ridiculous money!!!
