Great work to draw with Hull, I hope you can do the same or go one better against Bristol on the 23rd!

If you do keep holding the top teams it'll keep things nice and tight at the top of the table.

Thanks Flash Harry. This weeks game is a big ask. Bristol City have been going very strongly this season. They tend to win away games 1-0. We are in good shape though with several of our injured players now back in contention. Lisbie will play and Watson should too. Also newish signing Hammond from Brighton is in the mix.

We will do our best (coz we have no choice! We need every point to get out of trouble).

We looked dead and gone but now we are back!

We're away at Barnsley next Tuesday night. I'd say a full house and a terrific atmosphere there for their inspired team. Not often you get to play against the two richest teams in the world. And Barsnley get to do it!

At Least Bristol haven't been pumping in the goals like some of the other promotion contenders. If you get one goal early I hope Bristol struggle to get more than a draw out of the game.

Following the Championship over here has been great. The history of the match-ups, parochialism, passion and singing of the supporters has been great. But the results have added a real tension and unpredictability which has hooked me in more than the Prem.

Last weekend I saw Watford play Charlton at the Valley and couldn't get over how poor the refereeing was. It was a 2-all draw with Charlton 2 up at half time.

I've been told the Championship refs were usually better than the Prem as they're not overawed but while watching it I felt like it could have been a replay of one of the A League games by the standard of referring. A very physical Watford charged Charlton players off the ball with no whistles going, they missed offsides, even a missed handball in the box.

But the atmosphere was great. There's a lot to be said about purpose-built football grounds which don't have to accommodate cricket, AFL or athletics.

Come on you U's, Vale and Barnsley (sorry LG) ;)

Don't mind Flash harry, I love seeing the NOT big name teams doing well. You are correct too about the refereeing standards. My sources at QPR say pretty much the same thing. It must be a universal thing!

Glad Flash Harry is enjoying the Championship. When I lived in England I followed ColU (of course) but often watched other lower division games. I rarely watched Div 1/Prem League. Firstly cost too much, secondly too hard to get tickets/travel to game/fight way through crowds/pay exorbitant prices for drinks and food.

I actually liked watching the Conference. I watched games at Fisher, Maidstone, Welling and Dagenham and they were great fun!

This years Championship is wide open - the gap between top and bottom is not that great (ColU points total would be safety in other divisions).

And once again another topsy turvey result. Preston beat top of the table Stoke 2 - 0 to climb out of the relegation zone. The leaders in the Championship sure are doing everything they can to give everyone a chance in the play-offs! It has widened the gap to safety a bit for ColU though. I hope you make the most of this weekends game.

Good for Preston but a hammer blow for us. I never expected that result as Stoke have been consistently strong.

Much gloom around my family and friends in Colchester; the hope is beginning to fade I fear.

Wolves today - heres hoping! Full squad so no excuses. Lisbie needs to fire and hopefully maybe a Jackson free kick! ANY win will do with ANY player scoring !!!

Well we've bought in Izale Mcleod on loan from Charlton. Only 1 goal in 18 appearances for Charlton but he was prolific with MK Dons. Colchester have a habit of sorting out misfiring strikers after Iwelumo and Cureton and we're getting there with Lisbie so hopefully Mcleod will be more of the same!

A good move for Mcleod and hopefully he bags loads of goals for you. There was no way he was going to get a run with Scott Sinclair now on loan at Charlton from Chelsea (apparently he's majic). The way Charlton have been botching goal scoring opportunities in the past two months they need someone a bit more clinical and from what I've seen and heard of Mcleod he's still trying to find his mojo in the Championship. Iwelumo has gone off the boil a bit though, perhaps because Curbishley hasn't been starting him much lately. Maybe CAFC could send him back your way too?

Good luck for the wekend!

Would love Iwelumo back but can't see it happening really. Charlton have bagged someone who looks like they have a great career ahead of them in Sinclair from what I've read. Cheers for the good luck message, same to you, I'm assuming you're a Charlton fan?

Sadness prevails. A desperate defeat. Difficult now, life just isnt fair! The new stadium is nearly ready, the finances are good, the administration first class, the crowd good, good youth team.........dont let us go down please!

Leicester deserve to go down, the Iron will go down, send Preston down please let us stay!!

Well Willy I've been vaguely following Charlton since I arrived in the UK back in June - so not a true long-term 'fan'. A mate at work's been a member all his life and I went to my first game here in the members end at the Valley last month and was blown away by the atmosphere. Since I arrived I've been listening to the matches on the radio via the Beeb and decided early on that I'd forget about following the Prem league as it was just too predictable and over-hyped. I've watched and listened to a few Plymouth matches as I was interested in how Fallon was going, did the same with Mulligan at Sc**thorpe and then Vale which is how I happened on this thread.

My closest club is Brentford in League 2 and I hope to get to a couple of their matches too before the season's out and I come back to NZ - Welly hopefully.

I'm finding the Championship and League 1 really gripping. It's just a shame that ColU and Vale are really lacking a killer punch when it counts and a good dose of luck - I heard the ref had a lot to say in the match today Orpe?

Yeah, you've got a great amount of entertainment over there at your disposal, we have the NZFC and A-league - no fair!

4-1 today against Plymouth, yikes. Relegation is looking more certain by the day...least Lisbie scored a good goal though.

Getting too late now. We will need to be at playoff form to gain the points necessary. 4-1 shows a team with lost confidence.

Still there is always a chance so yes please Tigers to beat the Iron!!

McLeod is out for the season. Gone back to Charlton for recovery - 9 months out.

Sheringham is retiring.

We need three wins in a row starting with Palace.

Yes that was good. Leicester, Coventry both looking weak, and I dont think Scunnie have the strength in the squad. Its not impossible....just difficult!

You guys know what the feeling of being at the bottom is like....good for you that you are not up and clear.

What's happening with our Valiant boys?

I've just spent 5 days with a Palace supporter and have had enough. Hope you give Palace a spanking!

Vale are as good as gone. They're up against Doncaster in a couple of hours and will do well to avoid a thrashing as Doncaster look to go top of the table. They're 14 points off the safety zone and 11 goals behind current 20th spot team Crewe.

They've also got falling attendances, rumours of take-over bids and team moral looks low. Most of the news about Vale centres on poor refereeing decisions costing them goals and games (a sure sign that there's a smell of death in the air...).

On the up side I doubt if Mulligan will want to play in Div 2 under a year after playing Championship football. A move to the Nix may look appealing. But on the ValeMad forum there are a few disparaging comments about his ability (or lack of it) at right back.

Where have our Valiants fans on gone on this thread?

Bummer One:   ColU lose 2-1 at Palace. Now 9 points from safety. getting into the too hard basket now. The administration and management pledge that squad will be retained for a promotion push season in Div1 if the worst happens. No panic just reality. We also have a good youth set up producing some good players (like Elito who will get a chance next year). ColU people know what an honour it has been to be in the Championship and we have let no one down.

Bummer Two: I feel for Vale fans. It is tough when the trapdoor is gaping wide open and nothing seems to go your way. ColU fans had to watch as we dropped into the Conference a few years ago and that was a horrible experience! ColU came back and so can you.

This has been a great thread celebrating the lesser known sides; thanks to all contributers especially Lonegunman and Tigers who have always been complimentary about our teams.

I see the tigers are up a place. The U's will probably go down but when you look at the last 18 months, nearly the entire club has been ripped apart with transfers of players and staff. hang in their guys, we all know there's only two teams in East Anglia, Colchester and Cambridge United.

sh*t, forgot about HN and his beloved Ipswich!

Defeat at home to Wednesday is probably the end of the road. I cant see how we will get enough points to escape now as we are six behind Sc**thorpe and 10 from any kind of safety - that means we have to get ten points more than those teams in the remaining games. Too hard.

Life just isn't fair! Back to Div 1 and kick and rush footie!

And we wont be playing poor old Vale either by the look of it!

So goodbye Hull City and goodbye QPR!!

Ditto

How come Sc**thorpe is a banned word other than the obvious missing letters. It's not used in that term. Mind you We've got them coming up shortly and hopefully Col U will when when we do.

Just our luck having Mcleod out straight away. I'd look to take one of Man Utd's young guns on loan, Febian Brandy or Danny Wellbeck perhaps. Play Sheringham while we still can, I'm sure he wants to go out on a bright note and he's got the class and experience to help us.

Good idea. I think we have good players, we just got into a bad spell and then it just became hard. Confidence goes down and the margins between winning and losing are quite narrow. Apart from Plymouth game we are not being thumped. just losing by one goal all the time!

Vale with a 2-0 win against Crewe! Ties them level with Luton on 25 points but way behind on goal difference, and Luton have a game in hand, albeit against Oldham who sit 8th in the table.

Villa's Chris Herd played his last game for Vale and at least left on a win. Some satisfation in pulling Crewe down with the ship, they're now tantalisingly close to Vale on the edge of the relegation zone (Vale only trail by 12 points...yeah I know still a huge ask!).

Dave Mulligan wasn't even on the bench though and I can't see any reference to an injury. Maybe he was left out because he's been seen talking to Ricki?

If the Valiants can string together a couple of wins this could get exciting.
