That's good news. 6 Months to a season out was a bit of a worry...

Johnson Unveiled. Not quite the 80,000 fan fare but we don't need that sort of prissy attention

From BBC:
As well as brushing off speculation over the length of Aurelio's absence, Benitez dismissed rumours surrounding Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano.
The midfield duo have been linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona but Benitez said they remained Liverpool players.

"Both players are our players and we are really pleased with them," he said. "Both have two to three years on their contract so we don't need to do anything."

Even better! Just need the players to front up now...

Damn! Must have been some betting for SkyBet to slash the odds. Heres hoping...
Have to say, however hard it is to look at him, I think I could manage it if he wore LFC Red

EDIT:
Pennant's gone to Real Zaragoza in the La Liga. More cash for Rafa. No loss there.TheKop2009-07-10 11:54:07

Can't see it happening.....although couldn't see Owen going to the Mancs either. Would be awesome though. Although Rafa was bleating about how expensive the transfer market was this morning, makes me think we don't have much cash to splash.

Gargh! Stoopid Pennant. Good riddance...

Hopefully it's a ploy. Maybe he's spending more on Ribery than he would like

Hope so! He is pretty sneaky though so who knows...Ribery would be amazing in our team

ribery would be a great addition to the liverpool squad. With kuyt, gerrard, torres and ribery at the attacking end, and alonso/masch in behind.... f*ck me that'd be the best front 6 in europe...

and f*cken hell tyler, that avatar

Real would beg to differ, I'm sure (Ronaldo, Kaka, Benzema etc).

And I'd say Arsenal would certainly be able to compete at the front 5, the 6th is a bit more difficulty unless a DM signing is made.

ronaldo would be better than kuyt on the right, but that's all for Real in my opinion - i reckon ribery and gerrard are pretty much the match of kaka depending which position he plays in.

Masch/Alonso would be as good as any of the midfielders Real put out there, and torres beats benzema hands down for mine.

But me beloved arsenal would have the best front 6 under 25

Not that this argument even matters lol;

Without ribery that front 6 loses out on the winger front...

In saying that though, i am actually a fan of riera and babel. I dont think you scousers need anyone out there. Just a striker and you're sorted..................

Interesting...

Benitez: I thought about signing Owen

Rafa Benitez has admitted he considered bringing Michael Owen "home" this summer.

But the Kop boss decided against taking free agent Owen back to Anfield following his illfated spell with Newcastle because he knew the striker would not want to play second fiddle to Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard - particularly as he looked to win back his England place for South Africa 2010.

Benitez said: "We had contact with different people and were analysing the situation. But if you want to play Torres and Gerrard there is not always a lot of space for other players.

"When I brought back Robbie Fowler it was a different situation. We were looking for someone who could understand his role clearly and he was a good finisher.

"But we have a World Cup coming up and all the top players want to play. In his position it would be hard for Owen to play every week at Liverpool.

"We are confident in Kuyt, Babel, Ngog and Voronin for next season. We have players with quality.

"People say I might need another striker but I remember signing Robbie Keane and everyone was saying good things.

"Then after I sold Robbie people were saying I was short of strikers but we scored more goals than anyone in the Premier League."

Guess that confirms Voronin as our new second striker. I doubt anyone else will be coming this summer.TheKop2009-07-12 19:24:30

I'm pretty sure that Owen will play second string at Man-U behind Rooney and maybe Berbaflop? Doesn't really seem right what he is saying especially as if the rumours are true Owen was keen as to come back to the Pool. If we can hold on to Alonso and Masch then we should be right for the next season.

I read somewehere today that Masch has been offered a payrise 25k a week up to 75 k! Thats a massive jump. Also rafa said that two other clubs had bid for Nando......get lost Man City!

Babel is proper rubbish. I've been impressed with what I've seen of Riera though.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez halted Real Madrid's spending spree - by rejecting a massive 65 million pound bid for Kop ace Fernando Torres.

In an astonishing move, it has been reported that Madrid swooped for Torres AFTER sealing deals for 80m Ronaldo and 56m Kaka.

Rafa also revealed that Real was not the only club interested in his star striker as Chelsea and Manchester City also showed their interest.

But Benitez made it clear that the club would NOT sell Torres at ANY price mainly because Torres is happy at Liverpool.

"We always knew when a bid came we'd say no because the main thing was the player wanted to stay." Rafa is reported as saying. (The People)

Madrid at it again ...
Throw United in there as well, heard somewhere that they put in a 60million bid for him.

And in terms of Transfer rumours, TVNZ have a good daily compilation of all the transfer gos mainly coming from the big Premiership clubs.

ALONSO CLOSER TO ANFIELD EXIT

//sigh It's almost looking inevitable now...

Any ideas for a replacement if/when Alonso is shipped on out? If he does go it looks like it will be for at least $30m.

Torres wouldn't go to Madrid. At least, I hope not. Which is, and I won't go on and on because you know (and don't like) what I think of him, what Owen has basically done. Do you think Torres will leave Liverpool in 10 years when he's won loads of trophies , and go back to Real. No, I think he has too much respect for Atleti. As opposed to Owen, who sees the opportunity and takes it. Now, I'm not that much of an idiot, I can see why he went there. As somebody on RAWK said: He's the ultimate professional footballer; and thats not meant in a good way.

Torres- five times the player, ten times the man.

But, whatever. I'll let it die. I'd rather have Torres anyway!

I cannot believe Masch gets paid so little!! He really ought to get a pay rise. I just wish Xabi and Masch would stay, but it's too hard to know whats going on these days. One day its dead, another its all on again.

at Ribery. Yes please, if we can keep Masch and Xabi!!

LFC v St Gallen

First game tomorrow. Interesting to see who gets a run. I suspect Voronin will play up front for Torres as the Spaniards don't link up with the team until Saturday. May see the likes of Spearing in the midfield too...

Reina in midfield again?  Give Pacheco a run, hopefully! And maybe some of the kid centre-backs- Kelly, Ayala, San Jose?- and maybe Darby will get a run around as well as Johnson... Can't wait to see the Mighty Reds in action again! I despise closed season more often than not. El-Kun2009-07-15 09:09:18

ROBBIE FOWLER wished his old Anfield team-mate well last night, but the Liverpool hero admitted he could never have made the same decision as Michael Owen.

Obviously I want Michael to do well but I dont want Manchester United to do well, said Fowler, who used to taunt United fans by signalling Liverpools superior European Cup tally to their bitter rivals whenever he scored against them.

Its a sticky situation and I dont want to get drawn into things with Michael and Man United. Everyone knows Im a Liverpool fan, he added.

But if Michael scores a lot of goals then I hope Fernando Torres scores a lot more.

The voice of God. Superb quote, that.

0-0 with St Gallen this morning. Missed the game myself, but I hear Johnson played really well, and Yossi had a really great game too. Pacheco did well, but his decision-making was a bit off. And Kelly made a "brilliant" tackle. But, on the whole, a good run around for our lads.

. Didn't get us the result, mind! Nah, its just good to see the boys running around again! Especially Pacheco, I want that kid to do real well. Highlights are on youtube, although they are probably being taken away, so hurry and look! "St Gallen v Liverpool" should do the trick.

Lads I have had the flu for the last few days..and my freaking computer broke as well. All I could do was stew on the fact that Alonso (as per the last info I had) is leaving and I came to the conclusion that Rafa has totally dropped the ball on this one. Everyone knew he was being farmed out last year to fund the Barry move but then he has an amazing year. He is well loved by the fans and seems really happy at Liverpool if you believe what he said after the confederations cup. He has been treated quite badly but still keeps his integrityand always respecting Liverpool  etc and then Rafa says that he owes Liverpool loyalty? I really feel that he has been nothing but professional throughout this situation and I would be gutted if he left but could understand if he feels a bit poo pooed on. Makes me question Rafas manging techniques...Sorry guys maybe I'm still sick!...any thoughts?

I watched those youtube clips of the St Gallen game. Yossi was looking really good, some cracker strikes. Good to see the Reds back on the park!

Agree. The Yossi of 2009 was a brilliant player for us, so I hope he can carry on that form into the new season.

There are a few reasons why Alonso would want to leave, as far as I can tell. One was that stuff last year with Barry. Also, he probably fancies a move back home, maybe to raise his kid there, whatever. With the new era of scum at Real, he probably wants to be part of that too (although he won't be as remembered as if he won the League here). Also, it's possibly his last "big" transfer in terms of his age. Probably more, but I can't really be bothered as they're all obvious.

What I don't understand is that he is a Basque. So why would he be alright with joining the Franco Fan Club?

But meh. I hope he doesn't leave. "He's the man on the ball" as Reina aptly put it.

Oh the man is a midfield maestro,
And his passes are soooo delightful,
Everyone wants to know,
Alonso, Alonso, Alonso!

How's this for a rumour

Summary: Alonso wants his future sorted by this weekend. Real about to offer $22m cash + Negredo + Sneijder.

The cash will be used to re-offer Valencia for Silva which is said could be rapped up "allowing Silva to sign by next wednesday."

Could be quite a weekend ahead...
