Doesn't Man U have double the debt of Liverpool?

WTF, Also read Mascherano's family feel they can't settle in Liverpool and want a move to Spain.

On signing front Glen Johnson is one that has been gaining steam for a while, somewhere in the 15m-18m range.

If we need to replace Masch who could we get?

Rafa would never sell Nando to Fergie. Never.

I've seen Masch's name popping up too which is pretty unsettling. If he goes then we make sure we have Silva and Johnson and that Lucas kid starts pulling his head and playing to his potential.

Maybe pick up someone like Sneijder from Madrid. He's looking down the barrel of a bench warming season. Same boat for Vand der Vart and Huntelaar??

LIVERPOOL FC OFFICIAL STATEMENT

"Despite repeated media speculation on the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Liverpool has received no official approach or offer from any club regarding the players.

"Neither is for sale and furthermore Liverpool has no interest in the long list of Spanish based players being linked with a move to Anfield as part of any deal."

Clearly that rules Silva out. Who now? Surely not just Johnson.

Sneijder would not be a direct replacement for alonso or the masch - in liverpools set up he'd be more suited to gerrards spot. And both are far too good to leave on the bench so i wouldnt think sneijder would be a good option. Van der vaart maybe - is more in the alonso/pirlo type mould... should alonso leave.

There's a few midfielders at Real who might be sniffing around other teams now that kaka and ronaldo have arrived - they've still got sneijder, van der vaart, L Diarra, M Diarra, Guti, De la Red, Gago, Robben, Drenthe, and a couple more fringe players... perhaps some bargains available.

I don't think it does rule them out coming to us, only in a deal in exchange for one of our players

Yeah, but at least they're winning stuff. We're potentially in real trouble, although I'm not particularly clued up in all that financial jazz.

Torres won't leave to United.

I hate the transfer season. Good that we've come out to quash those rumours regarding Masch and Xabi. Nobody at Real would replace either of those two.

He's off to City I reckon. They'll offer something close to that $140kpw, he and his family are already setup in Manchester and he wants to stay in the PL. He'll also start every game alongside Robby up front. Could be a lethal pairing...

As for club debts, it's fair to say all clubs have reasonably large debt. The problems arise when servicing that debt. LFC is a good example because the club itself is healthy and making a profit but the numpty hillbilly owners can't payoff their loans for the company that owns the club. Also LFC aren't making enough profit to assist in the service of that debt as it's needed to be put back into the club for transfers and general running of the club. Hence why the owners are having to sell up their other interests. A club like United may have larger debt but the group/family behind United have the finances and resources to service the debt without digging too much into the clubs profits, which allows them to have healthy transfer budgets (I'm guessing United the club make a higher profit than LFC with bigger gate sales and more idiots - erm, misguided people buying the merch). Also making 80m off one player helps too...TheKop2009-06-15 20:32:58

It seems like a heap of money to pay for Johnson. Bye bye Arbeloa and Dossena though?
Permalink Permalink
almost 17 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
Apparently there's still money owing on Crouch and the sales of Dossena and Arbeloa will top it off with a bit left over. Don't really want to see Arby go though. Surely he's more talented than Johnson?

Yeah Johnson price is pretty steep, but with Chelsea and City around we had to pay what they were paying, plus he's English so there is a price increase just for that. People talk about how Pompey still owe us for Crouch so it is really that much, but there is no logic behind that.

I thought Arbeloa was pretty good at right back got forward, delivered nice crosses and generally looked sound at the back. He did make a few mistakes, but from what I've seen from Johnson he's much more error prone.

Johnson can attack, but can he defend?  Rumour is Arbeloa's wife isn't happy, or home-sick or whatever. Just cant believe how much we're paying for Johnson!! Its crazy, especially for a defender. Arbeloa always did a good enough job, in my opinion.

Haha, well in Xabi...

Silva's a winger/second striker. Interchanged with Mata last season. But we still need to sign a reserve striker, last season's (N'Gog) is gonna be out on loan and even if he wasn't going on loan we would still need to sign another striker.

Valencia were getting Negredo as part of Villa deal, but now seems like he is going to Barca so could be available. But LFC statement before puts doubt on all Spanish players.

Yeah, technically he's a winger but he knows how to put the ball in the net and he's talented and he's Spanish and he's coming... {queue Rafa's announcement}

Liverpool will kick-off the 2009-10 Barclays Premier League campaign with an away clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds will visit White Hart Lane on August 15 looking to get the season off to a flier and avenge the 2-1 defeat they suffered in the corresponding fixture last season.

Stoke City are the first visitors to Anfield four days later before Liverpool host Aston Villa in front of the Kop.

The Reds travel to Stamford Bridge to do battle with Chelsea on October 3, before Manchester United arrive in L4 on October 24.

The first Merseyside derby of the season is scheduled to take place at Goodison Park on November 28 while the Reds will take on Arsenal at Anfield on December 12.

Rafa Benitez's men will play host to newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day, ahead of a visit to Villa Park to cross-swords with Aston Villa on December 28.

Liverpool's first Barclays Premier League fixture of 2010 will see Tottenham come to Anfield on January 9.

Everton make the short journey across Stanley Park on February 6 ahead of the Reds' encounter with Arsenal at the Emirates on February 9.

Liverpool will look for a repeat of their unforgettable performance at Old Trafford last season when they face United away on March 20.
The end of April will see a home clash with West Ham United (April 17) ahead of an expedition to Barclays Premier League new-boys Burnley on April 24.

Liverpool will wrap up their season at Anfield by doing battle with Chelsea on May 1 before the Reds end the campaign at Hull City on May 9.

[QUOTE=TheKop]Hypothetical here...

IF Barcelona offer $45m for Masch should Rafa accept? It's veery tempting...

no offence to Masch but $45m for him is INSANE, has the footballing world gone crazy. If i was rafa i would sell him for anything over 20 really

If Mascherano's family is really unhappy living in Liverpool then we would have to let him go, if not if it may come down to how desperate we are for cash. I think Mascherano is the best player in his position, no other player is as good at disrupting attacks and winning ball then making the easy pass. Maybe we could get Yaya Toure from Barca or Mahamadou Diarra, but both are downgrades from Masch.

Read on Goal.com that LFC Store has 'Johnson Number TBC' for shirts, haven't bothered to check if it really is there, or if it's been taken down.

We paid 19m, for him since then his reputation has increased and the transfer market has been inflated by Real Madrid. But still 45m is a huge sum, not quite insane, I would expected 30m for Mascherano.

Mascherano's agent, Walter Tamer, met Barcelona representatives in the city's Rey Juan Carlos I hotel for two hours last night as the European champions intensify efforts to sign the 25-year-old. It is believed Tamer, who last week claimed Mascherano would relish a move to Barcelona and that "a transfer would be feasible", was seeking assurances about the personal terms on offer should his client attempt to force through a deeply unpopular exit from Anfield.

Definitely looks like Barca will table an offer. Will be interesting to see what they come up. I agree it will probably involve a swap for Toure.

I heard that Johnson was putting pen to paper in the next 24-48 hours. Can't see his name listed in the LFC store.

It would ruin the balance of our midfield if Mascha left as he allows Stevie G to push forward and we could probably say that part of the reason that Alonso did so well last season was because of him. Still 45 mill! Toure would be good though

Would you be disappointed if you end up having to stay at Liverpool next season, Alonso was asked after Spain's 1-0 win over Iraq in the Confederations Cup. I can't answer that question, he replied.

Oh dear...

3rd top leaked on football shirt culture. Nice, pretty similar to all the white tops we've had in the last 10 years, especially some of the later reebok ones. Could've done without the stitching on the sleeves though, atleast our shirts aren't like Chelski's/Bayern's or Spains ugly template.

Hope that's not the "one or two signings" Rafa's been talking about.

Another youngster signed, an English kid!!!! These are the type of youth players we always sign, they are not part of Rafa's squad signings, after Johnson signed up wonder who will be next on list.

And Gillet is selling Montreal Canadiens. So should be all good on financial front, well at least secure.

I wouldn't take 45mil for Masch.

Good news, I suppose, about Johnson. Hopefully he can help us when we attack a little better, as Arbeloa always seemed to hit the first man! Still, I rate Arbeloa.
