You guys have won what, 18 league titles, and you're saying someone who never won any of those is your best ever player?

As good as he was/is, that just doesn't seem right

*based on commitment, passion and ability.

Not sure if best ever (he says it's King Kenny) but certainly my fav ever. Also being a one-club player (so far) these days is pretty fudgeing impressive in itself. Even more so that it's the club he's loved since he was a kid.

I don't think he is the best and would have struggled to get into a couple of the great teams of the past, (early 80's),  and that is fact. He is an outstanding player though, truly outstanding but there have been better players in his postions.

Well he had the chance to bail a number of times but stayed with the club. Much respect to him for that.

You mean this?

Which lead to this...

Three for me, and two for them.

He texted Mourinho that he was joining him too only to later pull out. There were rumours he was involved with Liverpool gangsters who wouldn't let him leave, although that's probably nonsense.

That's the one lads.....I remember being so freaking pissed off at him at the time, then he had a change of mind in the middle of the night and signed in the wee hours. and yes.....Liverpool fans are a feral bunch.

I heard the Liverpool gangster rumours. Including that he had an affair with a Liverpool gangster's girl...but they said it would be all good if he stayed with the club! Not sure that is truth though

Who said he's perhaps the best PL player?

Rodgers said it, his manager, a man who knows the club wants Gerrard to stay on so why wouldn't he say it?

Perhaps is a very sweeping statement, and although I love Stevie G and will always see him as one of the PL Greats, you could also use the word 'perhaps' to discuss the legend status of a whole host of players.

We could work out a formula I guess but you'd need start with some of these details...

  • Trophies Won
  • Goals/Clean Sheets
  • Seasons Played
  • Games Played
  • Teams Played for
  • Win percentage
  • Goal/Assist/Clean Sheet percentage of overall team totals
  • Match winning goals
  • Match winning saves
  • Match winning tackles
  • Pass completion percentage

and on, and on and on...just a few names to consider below along with Gerrard

  • Schmeichel
  • Shearer
  • Terry
  • Henry
  • Scholes
  • Lampard
  • Cantona
  • Giggs
  • Bergkamp

In summation, it's all subjective as to where you stand as a fan. It's like arguing about Beer vs Whiskey (it's all good but depends on your taste).

Must be a strange situtation to be in when you're teams flying and suddenly Liverpool isn't looking so flash.

I wondered the same actually. Will he think that West Ham's season is a temporary blip on an otherwise middling performance in any other year OR have they turned a massive corner in their history, especially with the new stadium on the horizon?

Liverpool haven't exactly been all-conquering for a while though either

Totally aware of that but they have the size and revenue streams to offer larger wages than 70% of other Prem teams and are still considered to be Football royalty (whether currently worthy of that status or not).

90% on here would rather play for Liverpool than West Ham for obvious reasons.

Yeah, that's fair; obviously Liverpool are still a more attractive proposition than most - I don't really see the point in Winston moving to a club like Liverpool at this point though, really.

If we played the rest of the season like that last 15 minutes...

Very strange line-up to start the game with, especially if the Lambert sub was pre-planned.

If Rodgers slips up against Man Yoo we could have an interesting January as a club.

Big time. They have invested time and money into his 'plan' and it is not panning out. Even if you take out Suarez and Sturridge, if you are in CL and invest $100m into players in the off season, you should be making it out of the group stages.

There is a stubbornness there that just won't abate. Strange times at the club.

Liverpool just lack the finances to compete it seems. Being out of the Champions league for that many years must have depleted their finances so much compared to clubs like Arsenal who they need to finish in front of. I think their fans should look at last season with joy but realise that 6th is probably their position.

Lucas Neill would be one of the 10% on here

Compared to Chelsea, Man City perhaps.

Not Basel though.

As the top team in the Swiss league though, they can pretty much guarantee CL football eyar after year to players

Not even sure what you're trying to say.

I was merely pointing out that you definitely have the finances to compete with Basel.

You knew they were doomed when the played Skrtel up front.

Finances yes, but it's relative to the league we're in. Despite a lack of massive names in their team, the are actually chock full of players who have extensive CL football experience and can not only offer players great wages (tax free status) but also guaranteed CL positions which Liverpool can't.

Of course Liverpool should beat Basel. Basel do have a far easier time of it because they would have more opportunity to rest players. It can't be easy to re-enter the Champions League having not been there for a few years.

Are you honestly claiming that players will be more keen to go and play for Basel than Liverpool?

Is that what you're trying to say?

Because it's wrong.

I'm saying that money isn't the be all and end all when it comes to who players sign with, CL football seems to be the bigger draw card. e.g. Pool are a bigger club than Spurs and pay on average more in salary, however we missed out on 2-3 signings for them in recent years due to their CL status. Players chose Spurs over Liverpool and that as due to just one season of guaranteed CL football. Basel can offer a much better offer, players get to live in an amazing city (been there and can attest to it) and again, wages may be less but are tax free. The major card at play here is the CL games.

What are you on about? Spurs have only been in the CL once and it was 4 years ago.

Three for me, and two for them.

Put a Liverpool contract on the table for every Basel player, at the same wages he's getting there, and see how many sign up Leighbo.

Weird argument from you to be honest.
