Yes there is a huge difference between sports.
For example, all a wildcard berth is is entry into the play-offs. The play-offs comprise 31% of the teams in the league, so equivalence for the premier league would be finishing in the top 6. Essentially Liverpool have achieved 3 'wildcard berths' in 5 years of ownership.
If you only take the first 5 redsox seasons under FSG ownership to make the comparison fairer, then you get;
- 1 title
- 1 pennant (same season as the title)
- 3 wildcard berths
Really brings it back down to earth somewhat. Once you get 13 years of ownership the comparison might be a bit more relevant I think.
Worth noting that the title the Redsox won in 2004 was completely unexpected, and against the odds, coming from miles back to beat the Yankees in the playoffs etc.
You know you guys should've won the league last year, can't blame that capitulation on the owners. You should have a title in your first 5 years, just like the Redsox!
