Would've thought Firmino, Coutinho and Lallana behind the lone striker (assuming Sterling is gone)?

I would be surprised and disappointed if Ballotelli was still here at the start of the season.

Be lucky to make the bench in the coming season.  16 million for a reserve, but at least he has an EPL medal.

[quote=paulm]

Do you need a striker?

God yes

Balotelli going nowhere

And did fudge all when he was with us last year

... Sturridge,

Highly injury suspect

and Ings

Well he hardly inspires confidence that he's a 20-25 goals/year man

I think we'll pay well over the odds for Benteke who may be effective but is not the sort of player who can fit into the sort of system Rodgers was using last year. We've paid megabucks for a big donkey recently- didn't work out so well. Probably do it again.

Bugger. This is going to be a long long season. Jr has finished his scouting report. I'll get him to post it. I haven't seen it but I know Benteke isn't on it.

Were most of you going over to Brisbane also at the MCG game in 2013? I loved the MCG and the absolutely massive croud, but Suncorp is a way better stadium for football. Class stadium. Bloody big week for them too with the Origin game last night.

Didn't go last time, as the wife was heavily pregnant, this time I had flights and accommodation booked well before I could secure match tickets.

No way was I going to miss out twice.

I missed out last time as i lost my job a month before it all went ahead - gutted! This time, I've had tickets, passport, flights and living arrangements sorted for months!

With this Sterling saga dragging on and on do you think there's any chance we might actually keep him? I know it's unlikely, but the last time we dug our heels in over a petulant striker who wanted to leave he ended up scoring 30 goals and almost winning us the title...

He's refusing to work with Rodgers and everyone is blaming the agent but Sterling himself has been difficult in recent dealings. Bascially, he's been a distraction since they tried to renegotiate a contract early last season. I can't see any way back for him at the club and I'd suggest that players may be over him. All post-season break photos were players on holiday with another player, hanging out or at Mingolet's and/or Brad Jones' wedding and in all of that, not one shot of Sterling.

It's 1+1=3 but from that, I'd suggest that his own team mates have little time for him right now. If he suddenly did a U turn, he'd have to grovel to all and sundry, take the original offer and I can't see that happening. What I can see happening is City offering 40m + add-ons, us taking it and then Sterling getting splinters in his backside from the City bench.

Isn't the story that in January...or next year, he can buy out his contract for like $8mill or something tiny like that?

49 million squid! Yes please (10m will go to QPR).

They'll spend 29m of it on Benteke who, despite others concerns, I think will be a good signing with Phil and Firm running off of him. He's not overly active but he can hold a ball up AND he can finish.

I'm putting it out there that we will see him in West Ham, Villa or Stoke colours by 2017/18 season. He's good, he's not world class.

And that's the key point for us. Nothing I've seen from Rodgers or that transfer committee would indicate that they'll do anything sensible with that money. Benteke- still don't want him. Yes , he may be a good player , doesn't mean he'll fit, especially given the money he'll cost. Is he an upgrade on the squad? Maybe but so would Rosie White. But we won't get goals from anywhere else in the squad at the moment. Sinclair scores for fun in the reserves but is he ready for first team? Rodgers doesn't think so (which probably means he is)

Still, the way that little cock Sterling ( and his agent) have behaved means it's a good move for us to get rid of. Potentially a great player and may well be a major loss but still only potential. Ibe and Ojo may prove to be even better. Hopefully.

On another note , did I miss Jordan Williams name in the preseason trip or is he not coming?

Squad below with one edit. Williams has gone on loan to Swindon.

Quite a few names in there where I have to say "who?"...Fulton, Cleary, Maguire, Chirivella, Kent, Allen (HA!!)

Wonder who will come in for Sterling or if they don't bother. It's telling that Enrique, Borini and Balo aren't coming. Sad we won;t see Coutinho or Firmino but they need a break after Copa America.

As for the transfers...... £49m for Sterling is very fortunate. I don't think he's worth anywhere near that and he had to go anyway after all the bullshark.

Sterling = Milner + Firmino + Ings + Clyne

I often wonder this about players who leave. Do they regret it? Like someone like Torres who had absolute legend status at Liverpool then became just another player at Chelsea. I wonder if he will look back it and think he should have stayed (albeit with a champions league and Europa cup!)

Carroll was a short-notice gamble I think to replace Torres. Only had 20-odd EPL starts when he signed. Benteke is far more established. Is he worth the cash? Unsure but I'll certainly feel less nervous playing Villa if he's with us. My personal bogey team.
