I heard Madrid offered Mahamadou Diarra.

yeah I saw that. Another spring chicken at 29, would probs want big wages and will get sent off more often than cattermole!

Diarra is class though

Nope.. Apparently its around the same price as we bought him for. From West Ham reserves to Argentina captain and going to play for Barca and it is still the same price? I don't understand.

That's ridiculous then. I know he wanted to leave, and your asking for trouble when you keep a player who has his heart set on leaving. But Championship side Championship side Liverpool really should have played hardball. Worth at least 20-25m in todays market imo.

Exactly.. Given the fact we paid 18 mil for him- while he was in the West Ham reserves!- too.

So... now our midfield consists of Lucas, Poulsen and Gerrard.

We had Aqualiani but decided he needed first team football.

We need a proper left back, another striker and now a midfielder or two. All in 4ish days. No worries...

Raul Meirles to replace hopefully, seems all but confirmed on official website

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/aug/27/Championship side Liverpool-sign-raul-meireles-porto

i am stoked with this, hes a gifted player on the cheap, and actually wants to play for this football club.

Hmmm... I guess we have to be happy that we've boosted the midfield a bit! Haven't seen a whole lot of this guy, tbh, but a lot of people rate him

Meh. We knew he was injury prone, and we knew he wasn't gonna tackle. Always thought he deserved more game time, especially playing behind Torres.

Libpool v Northampton in the League Cup. Hopefully see some Shelvey and Wilson!

i think its only fair to give another club sh*t about not being in the champs league when your own club realisticaly stand a chance of winning it...

Which we do.

Arsenal are rated 5th favourites to win the ECL on Betfair, I'd say that means we're in for a shot at it. Just like you're in for a shot at the second tier European competition.

based on wengers record in europe and the strength of arsenals squad in comparison to the likes of inter, barca, real ,chelsea etc i think what i said is prety valid

Championship side Liverpool have a very proud European history. But it doesn't mean they are going to win the Champions League this season.

And I would say Wenger's European record is actually very good. Obviously he has never won the title but has taken Arsenal to the final and we consistently make the knock out stages.

Inter are at longer odds than Arsenal to win btw.

Signs of intent to stay up more like it.

Three for me, and two for them.

Well we got 3 points and at the moment that's good news. The Porto guy sounds like a good signing but the interesting work will happen over the next couple of days as Roy hinted that we're after a striker. Cole? Let's hope with the $$ we've gained so far from the fire sales we've had we can land someone a touch classier than Cole. One would hope with the signing of Meirless, eyes have been a little further afield of late...

Stay up in the europa league would be fair. Title isn't going to happen this season. We need new owners and heavy investment before we utter the words 'Pool and title in the same sentence for the moment.

If we get new owners in October that 'may' give us some cash to play with in January.

I dont think Cole would be a bad signing for you guys.
If Hodgson can do to him what he did to Zamora then you might be onto a winner.

I hate to point this out, but the last time you got new owners (Hicks and Gillett) Rafa proceeded to spend over 140 million on players in the next 2 seasons.

exactly. as a back up to torres i dont think hed be a bad signing.
the title isnt a realistic target this season we just dont have the squad for it, but the signing of cole is a good way to go about building one.

poulsen and lucas was just as bad a pairing as lucas and masch last season, the sooner meireles gets in the team the better

Roy was keen to get rid of Babel to make way for Cole. No back up striker apart from Ngog and Pacheco. Hopefully someone will step up this yearTyler2010-09-01 10:20:26

Because he is pretty average? Although that doesn't really answer your question.

Who knows what Rafa was up to last year

This!

Provide stability and a solid core without losing too many key players until we can get new ownership and investment.

Yes, UG, Rafa did spend 140 mill and produced a squad that came a close 2nd to Utd. The trouble was that the damn yanks had bought the club using debt which was always going to come back to bite. It meant that while Rafa spent 140 mill alot of that was funded through selling and eventually got to the point where he couldn't significantly improve the squad and it all cam crashing down.

I'm sure that part of the reason this sale is being drawn out (apart from H&G trying to get their pound of flesh) is because of additional due diligence by the board on prospective buyers to ensure they have sufficient cash to properly fund the club.

Because he's sh*te, his attitude is sh*te, he spends more time rapping than training, he thinks turning up to training a day early after the WC is a 'signal of intent', he doesn't take the opportunity when he gets one, he has no footballing brain... The list goes on. Wish we could get rid of him!

But yeah. Who knows what Rafa was up to last year?

Yip, Dani Pacheco- been saying it for years! This kid is quality. Really hoping to see quite a bit of him this season, even if its just coming off the bench. Buuuut, we have nobody as a decent back-up for Torres if he gets injured for a while. Same mistake as last year, nice.

Agree regarding Lucas + Poulsen. So slow its crazy!

Also, we signed Suso up which is good news, cos this kid is really good too, although a long way to go yet!

Signed Konchesky. Amazing signing. Sent Insua, El Zhar out on loan. Tried and failed to get Cole on loan. Got rid of Dalla Valle, another exciting prospect.

I don't understand; Hicks promised us a "big summer"... Pretty underwhelming if you ask me.

Sounds like H&G made another good profit on a transfer window.

Just came across these recent quotes:

Broughton -

"I've said it before and I'll say it again, we have no need to sell any players to pay off the debt." 16/7/10

"If we were to sell anyone, then the money would be reinvested in the squad." 16/7/10

Hicks -

"We have no intention of selling any of our top players and we have a substantial transfer budget in place." 27/5/10
