Whatever way you choose to view the transfer day antics, Madrid is still 100% to blame for waiting so log. United would've happily had the deal done on day 1 to avoid the crap all summer. Madrid tried to ass around though and this is their just deserts

I could care less who was to blame. If he now wants to play, then we have the best keeper in the league.

Thinking it was a bit of assing around on both parts - Man Utd wanting more money, Real wanting to pay less.

Who doesn't want more money? They waited until the last day and it bit them in the ass.

Congratulations to Wayne Rooney for equaling Bobby Charlton's  forty five year England record.

This achievement might never be surpassed.

Don't forget own goals, they are also tied on 49.

Hello Nemesis...

we're hoping to work out the finer details of having the United vs Liverpool derby played somewhere in Wellington this weekend.

The Liverpool supporters club will be there so maybe a few United fans for some added atmosphere?

We'll likely be collecting for a local charity as well but will update you when we know more.

De Gea signs new contract...Now that is a good "signing".

Permalink Permalink

Contracts don't mean crap - just means they get a fee for him end of season rather than him going on a free. There will be all types of release clauses (aka Suarez who signed for 5 years only to be gone 12 months later). The 5 year contract is a marketing tool to convince fans everything is hunky dory.

It means a lot. Real Madrid are going to have to pay a lot more than 29 million for him now.

I wouldn't think so. I'd assume there was some kind of release clause at a certain price point. He signs (as everyone does for 5 years) will a clause that if RM come knocking again he can go for XYZ price. The price is lower than would be usual because if MU don't agree to a lower buyout, he won't sign a contract extension and goes on a free next year.

Most expensive keeper ever went for £33m and can't see DDG going for anything near that. He's probably the 3rd best keeper in the Prem (maybe 2nd, maybe 4th) but few keepers are worth more than 20m

FIFA have him ranked at no  2.     Release is rumoured at 36 million quid.

FIFA have him rated as #2 in the world? I'm surprised by that - I do rate him, great keeper and will get better but not sure he's that good yet. Then again, FIFA do some weird stuff with ratings.

who are the better keepers in the prem?

Permalink Permalink

Courtois can catch crosses and Hart acts like a deluinquent in the tunnel well.\

While the De Gea contract appears to be a big money spin (for us!) the banter from the United twitter account is fantastic. Announced at 12:00 on the dot and also some further "blatantly aimed at madrid" tweets.

Whether he stays will depend on our season. If we have a relatively good one (champions league final) I think he might not leave. Surely if he can get his gilfriend out of his head he (being an Atletico boy) doesn't really want to play for Real...

As already mentioned the 1st half was pretty boring and although we had 65% possession I don't remember a shot on goal. Two timely substitutions changed the game. Young started to put pressure on the full backs and we scored straight away. Apart from the pass for the first goal Mata was invisible and when he came off we looked sharper.Liverpool did play a lot better in the second half and only desperate defending from the keeper and Blind kept them out. All in all we were better and deserved all the points.

Yup, 100% deserved the points there. We were awful -our CB pairing would struggle in the A-League at the moment. Regarding keepers, if I must justify opinion, I said he's probably 3rd best, maybe 2nd maybe 4th depending on what you like in a keeper. I still think that Cech is the best keeper in the league despite Chelsea letting him go (they wanted him to stay but Courtois is #1 for them with a view to the future despite Cech being the better keeper ATM.) Both Lloris and Hart are better than De Gea on their day, hence why I say he's somewhere between 2nd and 4th. He will likely go on to be the best keeper in the Prem (if he stays) but he's still error prone and his distribution is not as good as it could be. That's my opinion and my reasoning. Just like any opinion about the the best player is in XYZ team, in XYZ sport, in XYZ generation and in XYZ position. I don't really give a toss if you disagree as few people will agree on such things and have their own interpretations of what makes a top player.

He was the best keeper in the league last season. Also you know he's the best when Real come knocking. If he keeps up last seasons form I'd be surprised if anyone is above him this season.

De Gea is quite easily better than Hart. Lloris is good too, but in a team like Tottenham you don't really know how good he is considering he gets a billion chances to make wonder saves every game

Courtois is the best keeper in the league. De Gea is the best shot stopper, shot stopping being the easiest skill to master as a goalkeeper.

Three for me, and two for them.

Permalink Permalink

Unless I'm misunderstanding I think he rated Courtois outside of the top 4 as well?

Hart is overrated in my opinion. Lloris is excellent and I like his style, but he's too small, sort of a Neuer-lite.

De Gea, Courtois, Cech, I'd sit on the fence and toss a blanket over those 3, with the rest fighting for 4th.

No doubting De Gea was the best keeper in the league last season though.

I think Courtois is brilliant but he lacks in the command of his area and I don't mean catching crosses or sweeping but the organisation of his defence & controlling play in front of him.

This is something that Cech & Hart do brilliantly and is an underrated or even un-recognised skill by some people. Some of the best keepers avoid having to block shots by organising the blokes in front of them so well.

Obviously I watch Mingolet a lot and while he's a decent shot stopper (him dealing with crosses scares the crap out of me) he lacks command of the players around him and his distribution is poor.

The keeper is the only player on the field that can generally see everything going but some of them are still to learn how important it is that they use that to their teams advantage.

De Gea was the EPL keeper of the year in 2012/13 and 2014/15,  and was ManU's player of the year in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

Erm...is this the PFA awards or Barclays golden glove (or is there an award I've missed). I know De Gea was in the PFA team of the season last year. Pretty sure that last season the golden glove went to Hart and season before it was shared by Cech/Szczesny

Over last 3 season, based on stats that take in all major aspects of goalkeeping (via Squawka) De Gea was rated 9th, 10th and 7th. Aware these are just stats and they don't tell the full story (and also contradict my opinion that Lloris should be there or thereabouts)

2012/13 - Top 5

Cech

Begovic

Reina

Hart

Howard

2013/14 - Top 5

Szczesny

Howard

Mannone

Cech

Begovic

2014/15 - Top 5

Fabianski

Mingolet

Courtois

Pantilimon

Ospina

It comes down to a matter of opinion in many cases.

The Squawka ratings were interesting as it was not how I saw things at all and you see players like Begovic & Fabianski in those teams. It makes you wonder how much of a fee is (and opinion) actually dictated by the club they are at as well.
