If that was the challenge it happened on, terribly unlucky!

I am more critical than most because I believe we are so close and I don't take everything the club says as gospel.

Looking forward to the game tomorrow, ticking that off and having Walcott back out wide to make a big difference after the international break.

Still doesn't say which game is the live one on ESPN.

I usually check on my SKY recording app on my phone, it tells you who's playing

Wenger has confirmed Podolski is staying so that's good news. I don't think he wanted to leave in the first place.

We really are cursed with injuries aren't we? How is it even possible to break your ankle from that? And Giroud is not even injury prone. Diaby you could understand.

Yeah I thought that at the time (was watching the game with paulm) and was thinking maybe a ligament twinge at the outside. I can certainly see our new medical chap shaking his head right now!

Striker problem: get Afobe back from his loan spell at MK Dons? Although he hasn't played against any good defensive sides yet...

And so the madness begins. Thank goodness we only have to go through this for 4 more days.

http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/503571/Ars...

RE whether or not that can happen, a player on my team had a similar one in training. Slide in to make a block on a shot, ball lurched his foot, got an avulsion fracture (fragment of bone tearing away from main bone). It's painful, frustrating, and humiliating as it's a pretty 'weak' way to get injured.

All these people asking for a 'dream move' for Falcao - do they not realise he is attempting to come back from a major injury?

In the last hour we have been linked to Falcao, cavani, and zigic. Wat a circus!

Kind of interesting that our 2 big injuries at the start of the season have been in the 2 positions that needed addressing in the summer. Like some sort of power above felt the need to intervene.

off to work, mysky the game

You know 10 minutes before I watch it I will hear the score

Not convinced we need a striker. Podolski stays, Walcott will be back, Sanchez can do a job.

If we must buy then do it properly and get Canavani. Better to sign no one then get some of the thired tier piffle whose names have been bandied about.

How in the world that wasn't called a pentaly against Wilshere I will never know. He nicks him from behind, nowhere near the ball. Very lucky.

Another 45 mins of struggling with Sanchez up front, the team haven't really figured it out just yet but will need time.

Hopefully a confidence builder to get his first. Wilshere would have loved to finish what he started through that lead up

Other than a few rash challenges, or holding the ball a little too long, Wilshere has actually looked pretty decent today. Continues to fuel the speculation that the Wilshere Ramsey combo doesn't work perhaps?

The ref has been shite. Debuchy unlucky with both yellow cards really. Could have been 2-0, now 1-0 with 10 men.

We didn't look too flash. I only saw the second half. How did we failed to score in that 3 on 2 just before Chamberlain had his chance saved. That would have killed off the tie. The booking for our Chesney was dumb as well. Lets hope for a kind draw tomorrow.

Wilshere was immense, as was Debuchy until his second yellow.

Phew. What a relief. Those last few minutes with 10 men were torture.

Wilshere was immense I thought. Shows that we need him through the middle and not stuck out wide as he's simply not a winger. Would like to see him shoot a bit more often when he gets into the box instead of looking for another pass but that will come. He was at the heart of everything and with Gerrard and Lampard both retiring he has a chance this season to lock down an England starting spot for the foreseeable future. It's his time to step up.

Sanchez was awesome in the 2nd half for me. We looked a bit toothless and lacked the presence Giroud gives us up front in the 1st half but nice finish for the goal and he really needed that. Second half I thought he was really good. Pretty tough and strong for a guy who is not very big and he won a lot of battles, particularly late on when we needed to keep the ball up their end. Effectively paid off his transfer fee with a goal worth 30 million.

Ref was poor for both sides really. How in the world he didn't give a penalty for Wilshere's challenge I'll never know. I also thought Debuchy's was pretty stonewall too. Ridiculous yellow for Chambers too. The 4th official let him on the field so what was he supposed to do? Came on to defend and it meant he couldn't fully go into challenges for the last 10 minutes.

Relief to be through and we deserved it over the 2 legs.

Ox was good in stretching the defenders and showed why we need someone with pace who is a natural wide player out there. Finishing is still off but I'm sure it will come. He's kind of like a pre 2013 Ramsey. Getting into the right places at the end of moves but just not scoring. Feels like only a matter of when not if with him

Even worse than expected news on Giroud too. Out for at least 4 months after surgery.

Asked about the possibility of signing the 6ft 7in Serbian, Wenger responded: ‘Who? Zigic? No.’

Cazorla looked really good in the middle and Ozil is a bit wasted out wide. Bit of a dilemma there. I guess ideally they would be rotated in the playmaker role and we'd have an actual winger out wide.

Draw is 3.45am overnight tonight, live on ESPN. Pots as follows:

Pot 1 : Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Chelsea, Benfica, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Porto

Pot 2: Shalke, Dortmund, Juventus, PSG, Shaktar, Basel, Zenit, Man City

Pot 3: Leverkusen, Olympiakos, CSKA Moscow, Ajax, Liverpool, Sporting Lisbon, Galatasaray, Athletic Bilbao

Pot 3: Anderlecht, Roma, APOEL FC, BATE Borisov, PFC Ludogorets Razgrad, NK Maribor, Malmo

So what kind of group would we like? Be nice to get an easier group, finish top and get a better draw in the next round so we don't have to play Bayern or one of the other big sides again, although it's always going to be someone tough in the 2nd round. Sometimes that's been of our own doing though securing progress early then playing weakened sides in the last couple of games and ending up 2nd. Would also be nice to not get Dortmund in the group this season.

Somethig like Basel, Sporting, Anderlecht looks ideal, but could also be something really tough like Dortmund, Galatasaray, Roma. Hopefully we can avoid trips to Russia and Ukraine.

The way EUFA seems determined to stop us achieving in Europe, we will likely get Juventus, CSKA and Roma

We can't get Juventus and Roma, but in what way would you say UEFA are determined to stop us? Personally, I think the seedings are very generous to still include us in Pot 1 when we have finished 4th in the league so had to come through qualifying and haven't got past the last 16 for 5 years. We're lucky we're not in pot 2 or 3.

Permalink Permalink

That was my intial response too AJC28, are the pots chosen by UEFA or are they randomly drawn again?

Permalink Permalink
over 11 years ago · edited over 11 years ago · History

As far as I understand, the pots are based on coefficients which are determined by a UEFA ranking score for the past 5 years. I'm not entirely sure how the scores are calculated but I believe it's based on CL performance, so more points depending on how far you get. So given we haven't got past the last 16 for the last 5 years, it's surprising we're still ranked in the top 8.

We are currently ranked 10th in the UEFA club rankings, but 2 teams above us (Man United and Valencia) haven't qualified this season which moves us into the top 8 participants. This is more confusing though because Shalke are 9th but are in Pot 2 and Porto are 11th but go to Pot 1. The country coefficient may come into it too with EPL (2nd) ranked above Bundesliga (3rd), but that doesn't make sense for Porto moving above Shalke because Primeira Liga is ranked 4th.

Out of interest I just checked Juventus and they are ranked 22nd with 17 participants ranked above them but are in pot 2.

As for the groups it's a random draw of 1 team from each pot, although teams from the same country can't be drawn together.

Permalink Permalink

We're in the top group because we're consistently: i) in the CL; and ii) making it out of the group.

Looking forward to the draw. Dortmund, Juve and PSG the obvious ones to avoid in pot B. Nothing too dangerous in pot C for mine, although some lengthy travel possible. Roma the banana skin in pot D.

Arsenal have been in European competition every season since the 93/94 season. And haven't failed to get out of the first group stages since 2000. Only Real Madrid and Bayern have been more consistant

Wenger has made this pretty black and white from the beginning;

'Sanchez can play his whole life at centre-forward,' said the Arsenal boss. 'I bought him as a striker, not only to play on the flanks."

I don't think we'll be buying another forward.
