That's our intentions of aiming for 4th place again.

United who don't have Champions League to offer can still go after Falcao while we get their leftovers in Wellbeck (still 100% unconfirmed I know). We charge the highest season ticket prices in Europe and pay the highest salary to a manager in the league yet we have 6 defenders and a front line trio of Giroud-Sanogo-Wellbeck (?).

Uber you're happy being let down time and time again? Angst is unjustified?

3 games into a PL season with a team that is better than the one that only finished 7 points short of the title winners. I think the hysteria is childish and a little ridicoulos

I agree in part but the whole picture, as mentioned above in various angst levels, is that rivals have strengthened in a more forthright manner. As for Welbeck: he is straight in at 2nd striker for me and (or 'however' if you're a pesso) he is a different style of player. The one thing we have over last season is pace. Welbeck and Sanchez are rapid so there could be some exciting counter attacks. For pure finishing Welbeck is better than Sanogols and Giroud...? So let's see if the BPLs best attacking mf in Rambo and Ozil can get the ball through.

How old is Leggy?  Is he 12 or 72?

Hey, and early on today I had horrible fears we would sign naebiddy! So that is a big positive that we got someone in. In other big news Frimpong has joined FC Ufa. I'm going to check out who they are. North African club?

Apart from your blinkered support for Arsenal, what gave you the impression that he was?

Asking why van nistelrooy is a twat in an arsenal thread is the height of trolling but I would guess it probably started for most when he scraped Ashley C***'s shin that time.

I love the fact that his fluffed penalty was a huge factor in our invincible season.

Has Welbeck been given a squad number yet. I was just telling a work mate today that a year ago, I saw Welbeck score twice against Moldova at Wembley in a world cup qualifier. Never would have dreamed that a year on, he'd be a gunner.

Thoughts on Welbeck lads???? i think he's ok but never really paid great attention to him. He's pretty quick??

Was underwhelmed at first with Welbeck, now that it has sunk in there are some solid points, as mentioned in here hes british which will help with non foreign numbers.

He's always come across as a determined type and seems to have a good allroundness to him.

Haven't watched him in bucketloads yet, but from memory he is ok at finishing at those moments where Giroud stuggles, like banging in the odd ugly goal.

Totally surprised with now CB, am guessing we will pick one up in January.

No surprise about DM, I think Wenger will buy one next season when Flamini comes off contract, so the new player will go head to head with Arteta.

I thought it was a spoof but Brownbags has signed Niko K again.

For all the doom and gloom be thankful we are not the cheque book chumps. Looks like a farce up there.

Regardless of anyones opinions of Welbeck's ability or relative appraisal of his usefulness to us here and now, it's done please cheer the lad along. Would hate to see him treated like how some other clubs spit on their own players. I hope he settles quickly and finds working with Wenger a far more rewarding experience than Saf, Moyes, and LVG.

Part of planning successfully is to attempt to mitigate those "worst case scenarios". If The EPL title was the clubs aim for 2014/15 season (and it is IMO the overwhelming demand of the average fan) then the failure to secure a DM and CB in this window shows either a lack of drive/ambition or more likely, the club hierarchy feels the side is not ready but will not announce this publicly. For obvious reasons.

Wenger is a smart man, clearly he knows that we can only win the EPL with a remarkable run of fitness to 6-7 players. Given our historical "luck" with injuries it's  more blind faith than clear thinking reason to expect a return to 2004.

Regardless this will still be a big season for the club  and I'll be cheering (or hair pulling) the whole way.

You have not won it for 10 years, and if Wenger was as smart as you say, he should have won it a lot more.

The problem is more likely to be AW.

I'm on the fence with this positive / negative spin off. The day Debuchy is injured and then Mertesacker pulls up (par example) we immediately see a lack of depth in our defensive numbers. It's not being a doomsayer (that's a word right?), it's just what we're bound to see. On the other hand, getting wound up about something that hasn't and won't necessarily happen is also pointless. Everyone has a valid perception of this, they're just different angles and certainly half full / half empty. That's just how some people are, each view is as pragmatic as the other.

Please don't leave us Uber and Paulm, otherwise where goes the equilibrium? If we were all Leggy's, well then yeah - delete yellowfever, clear your history and move on with your life, but we all want the same thing come the end of the day - and this season is as good as any.

Happy as with Welbeck. He will be our Sturridge. Several United fans I know are gutted he has been sold, especially to Arsenal, so let's just lap up the role reversal for a while.

Thoughts anyone - do you see him starting as striker right off the bat? I enquire purely out of fantasy football managerial instinct.

Yep he comes straight in at CF and has until at least Christmas to prove he should be ahead of Giroud.

Permalink Permalink

Yep he's straight in for me, although typically now that he's an arsenal player he has picked up a knock in england training! Not expected to miss any more than the next england game though.

I don't know if he'll have enough time with us to start against Man City so perhaps I'd lead the line with Sanchez in that one, with a view to starting Welbeck against Dortmund or Villa. Might be nice for him to get a run against Dortmund to get him used to european football again.

And I'm not going anywhere Hawkwasp... I may have lamented what life might be like without YF but that's as far as I could probably go... I'm an addict!

Ive been so busy I had to follow deadline day on Twitter, and couldn't get near this. Given the way it ended I'm loath to review that 104 unread posts in this thread ;-)

Welbeck's a great move. Are there better out there? Of course. But is it a long term signing that matches Arsene's transfer policy? Absolutely.

Defensive, hmmmm. I think the bigger mistake was letting Miquel go. Surely he's a better option at CB than Monreal as 4th choice.

However January isn't far, and that's where I imagine we'll see Wenger do the business, or lock in a loan/free agent if we get caught out.

Reports that we failed with bids to sign Carvalho, Reid, Nastasic, Vlaar and Van Dijk on the final day. That's a DM and four CBs... crikey who f*cked that up...

Permalink Permalink

Whoever decided to bid for them 2 minutes before the deadline instead of a month or even a week ago probably.

I see no sooner than Welbeck has signed he's already injured in training. Didn't take him long to settle into Arsenal!

I wonder if that's down to availability or down to bargain hunting and hoping the final day equals good deals. I would have been very excited to see Carvalho, based purely on a roller coaster of a 20 min youtube video of him. I read on ESPNFC that it was reported clubs had cooled their interest in him because it had been decided he lacked the pace to play in the Premier League. Who knows how much truth there is to that though.

                                Giroud/Welbeck

Ozil/AOC     Ramsey/Wilshere    Cazorla/Rosicky      Sanchez/Walcott

                                           Flamini/Arteta

Gibbs/Monreal     Kosc/Hayden      Per/Chambers     Debuchy/Bellerin

                                           Szy/Ospina

Weak point for me is Hayden as cover for the other 3 CB's and DMF.

However there is plenty of quality in that side. Those in bold are injured. Those not included, Coquellin, Diaby, Zelalam, Podolski, Sanogo, Campbell.

He is a good player but not great. The one thing that he has is pace. I have never thought of him as our top striker, and if you doubt me, then go back a week, 6 months or more cause I have not changed my mind. He improved a lot when we loaned him to Sunderland and I was pleased to see him return, but he have just not delivered.

If he does for you---- good on him.

I'm just glad we have decent backup for OG and AW isn't forced by default to play Alexis up top as I'm not sure he's ready yet... AND I really want to see Ozil play in the middle behind Alexis, Theo, and a striker (seeing as Poldi is evidently never going to play the lone striker role under any circumstances).

Muchos excitos!
